Basic indicators

It is useful to define a series of reference indicators essentially based on the study of phenomena
in time (duration/ breakdown occurrence).

Definition Formula Notes

n
i=1
Dti It also includes the LDT
MDT It is the mean value of all Downtimes in a =_______________ (logistic delay time)
Mean Down Time fixed period n
(1 week, 1 month, 1 year) n = no. of times machine is
down
n
MTTR It is the mean value of the TTR (times to 
i=1
TTRi
=_______________ MTTR < MDT
Mean Time to Repair repair) in a fixed period (1 week, 1
month, 1 year) n
n = no. of repairs
n-1

MTBF It is the mean value of the TBF (times

i=1
TBFi
=_______________
Mean Time Between between failures) in a fixed period
n-1
Failures (1 week, 1 month, 1 year)
n = no. of times machine is
down

Calculation of MDT, MTTR, MTBF - Example

TBF1= 7h TBF2= 19h

1 2 3

time (1 week)

DT1= 3h DT2=1h DT3= 4h

TTR1= 1h TTR2= 12 min. TTR3= 3h

(=0,2h)
3h+ 1h+ 4h = 2,7h
MDT= ______________
3

1h + 0,2h + 3h = 1,4h
MTTR= _____________ MTBF MTTR calculation instructions
3
26h = 13h
MTBF= _______
2

Period: 1 week; 1 shift/ dd= 8h; 5 working days
