Combustion
• A simple definition of combustion
A chemical reaction between substances, usually including oxygen and usually
accompanied by the generation of heat
and light in the form of flame.

• WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS NEEDED FOR COMBUSTION?

• Presence of a combustible substance.
• Presence of a supporter of combustion.
• Heating the combustible substance to its ignition temperature.

The substance used in a fire extinguisher
differs based on the types of materials on
fire.

These can be divided into six fire classes involving

different substances:
Class A fire caused by combustible carbon-based solids
such as paper, wood or textiles. Class B fire caused by
flammable liquids eg paraffin, petrol, diesel or oil (but
not cooking oil).
TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
WATER = wood, paper & textiles
FOAM = wood, paper, textiles & flammable liquids
ABC POWDER = wood, paper, textiles, flammable liquids, flammable gases,
electrical contact
WET CHEMICAL = wood, paper, textiles, cooking oils &fats
CARBON DIOXIDE = flammable liquids & electrical contact
How does a fire blanket
works?
• The general procedure is to prevent fresh
air from reaching the seat of the fire,
allowing the combustion to reduce the
oxygen content in the confined
atmosphere until it extinguishes itself, for
example by Snuffing out candles.
Smothering a pan with a fire blanket.
Wrapping a person in a fire blanket.

1) Use extension cords safety - not under carpets or across
walking areas.

2) Use only one device per outlet.

3) Check electrical equipment and remove defective equipment.

4) Ensure electrical cords are in good condition.
