CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM TUTORIAL

1. Write an equilibrium constant expression for the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen to form
ammonia at 500°C.
2. For the following reaction at a certain high temperature,
CO(g) + H2O(g) ⇌ CO2(g) + H2(g)
the concentrations in a particular equilibrium mixture are CO(g), 0.0600 mol/L; H2O(g) 0.120 mol/L;
CO2 0.150 mol/L; and H2(g), 0.300 mol/L. Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant at this
temperature.
3. Consider the reaction
CO(g) + H2O(g) ⇌ H2(g) + CO2(g)
(a) When 0.0190 mol of carbon monoxide gas and 0.0400 mol of water vapor are placed in a 1.00-L
flask and allowed to come to equilibrium at a high temperature, the concentration of carbon dioxide is
found to be 0.0165 mol/L. Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant.
(b) If 0.00950 mol of CO and 0.0200 mol of H 2O are placed in a 0.500-L flask and allowed to come to
equilibrium at the same temperature, and the same concentration of CO2 is formed, what is the value of
the equilibrium constant?
4. If 0.0150 mol of SO 3 is placed in a 1.00-L vessel and allowed to come to equilibrium at a high
temperature, 0.00760 mol of SO3 remains. Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant for the
reaction.
2SO3(g) ⇌ 2SO2(g)+ O2(g)
5. Calculate the concentration of CO 2 at equilibrium if 0.0125 mol of CO and 0.0125 mol of H 2O gas
are introduced into a 1.00-L flask at high temperature and allowed to come to equilibrium. The value of
the equilibrium constant is 0.63.
CO(g) + H2O(g) ⇌ H2(g) + CO2(g)

6. At 525°C K = 3.35 ×103 mol/L for the reaction

CaCO3(s) ⇌ CaO(s) + CO2(g), Calculate the concentration of carbon dioxide at equilibrium.

7. If 0.200 mol of H2S is placed in a 1.00-L vessel at 700°C and allowed to come to equilibrium, what
will the concentrations of H2 and S2 be?
8. The following reaction occurs at 400°C:
H2(g) + I2(g) ⇌ 2HI(g) K = 50.0
If 0.0125 mol of H2 and 0.0125 mol of I2 are placed in a 1.00-L vessel and allowed to come to
equilibrium, can an approximation be used in the calculation of the concentration of each substance at
equilibrium? What is the concentration of gaseous iodine at equilibrium?
