-------India welcomes US terror label for Indian Mujahideen 17 sept 2011 Indian security personnel stand guard outside the reception area of the Delhi Hi gh Court at the site of a bomb blast in New Delhi on September 7, 2011. PHOTO: A FP NEW DELHI: India on Friday welcomed a decision by the US State Department to des ignate the homegrown militant group Indian Mujahideen a terrorist organisation. The US designation reflects our shared commitment to combat terrorism, said Foreig n Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash. Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for numerous bomb attacks in Indian cities in recent years, and is one of the suspects in the investigation into a blast earlier this month outside the Delhi High Court that left 14 dead. Announcing the addition of Indian Mujahideen to its terror list on Thursday, the US State Department noted the outfits close ties with Pakistan-based militant grou ps like Lashkar-e-Taiba blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The Indian Mujahideen is responsible for dozens of bomb attacks throughout India since 2005, and has caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, it said. http://tribune.com.pk/story/253726/india-welcomes-us-terror-label-for-indian-muj ahideen/ -------Uzbek first daughter a fashionable jet-setter By PETER LEONARD 17 sept 2011 MOSCOW: Glamour queen. International diplomat. Plunderer of the poor. Gulnara Ka rimova has been called all of these things. But all the eldest daughter of Uzbek istan s aging authoritarian leader appears to want is for people to like her. By the looks of things, that isn t quite working out. Over the weekend, the producers of New York s Fashion Week canceled a show by Ka rimova amid pressure from a human rights group. In a face-saving gesture, her ba ckers revived the event on Thursday at ultra-chic Cipriani on 42nd Street. Karim ova didn t show up, though activists protesting child labor in her homeland did. Turning up at fashion shows and dropping by at the Cannes Film Festival is part of a carefully nurtured public relations exercise by Karimova, who despite her f rivolous image is seen as a possible successor to her father. On the international scene, she has carved out an image as a fashionable jet-set ter. In her home country, Karimova is feted by official media as an accomplished diplomat, academic and philanthropist devoted to the cause of disadvantaged wom en and children. To her many detractors, 39-year old Karimova is a robber baron who has ruthlessly used her power to pillage businesses in Uzbekistan and who luxuriates in self-im posed European exile, while many in her country endure crushing poverty. Uzbekistan, a nation of almost 28 million people, is strategically placed along a key transportation route supplying US-led coalition troops engaged in combatin g insurgents in neighboring Afghanistan. It is rich in natural gas and gold, as well as being one of the world largest co tton producers, making it potentially attractive to investors. Although officially touted as an international stateswoman, Karimova rarely appe ars to bother herself with such matters. Her official website conveys the image of a carefree fashionista obsessed with g audy jewelry flitting between charity events in Uzbekistan and gala evenings in Europe. Karimova appears to take inordinate pride in having been photographed wi th notables including former US President Bill Clinton, singer Elton John, and a ction film star Steven Seagal. Another website, Googoosha.uz, documents Karimova s short-lived pop career (she sang under name GooGoosha reputedly her father s favorite nickname for her). One particularly eye-popping music video depicts a flying sports car wending its wa y to a palace in verdant mountains, greeted by Karimova bedecked in a flowing wh ite dress.

On top of all that, Karimova heads her country s diplomatic mission at the Unite d Nations office in Geneva, where she lives with her son and daughter. What the Harvard regional studies masters course graduate s websites don t menti on are her widely alleged links to obscure Swiss-registered Zeromax GmbH, a fail ed holding company widely believed to have been under her control. In a letter to Swiss magazine Le Temps earlier this year, Karimova denied ever h aving had any ties to Zeromax. Whatever the truth, the slow-motion collapse of Zeromax amid a mountain of debt has set some talking about Karimova s future. The winding-down of Zeromax is seen by some as a way of definitively erasing Kar imova s image as the oligarch and thereby making her more palatable to the gener al public. What might come next for Karimova was the subject of a passing remark in a cable from the US Embassy in Uzbekistan written in February last year and obtained by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. Karimova has always been very visible on Uzbekistan s political and cultural stag e, and some local observers believe that she is being groomed as the president s successor, the cable said. Islam Karimov, 73, has for two decades ruled over his country with an iron fist, mercilessly stamping out all opposition and any signs of Islamic radicalism. Ru mors have long abounded of Karimov s ill-health, and government websites heavily edit his photographs to airbrush away signs of aging. With almost all major international media outlets barred from the country, Uzbek istan-watchers must grasp at what little reliable information is available to he lp understand what will come after Karimov departs the scene. If Karimova s carefully nurtured domestic image as a kindhearted philanthropist is aimed at ensuring a soft-landing for her after her father is no longer runnin g the country, it is far from certain that anybody is buying the line. Another l eaked U.S cable from 2005 spelled out allegations normally reserved for whispere d conversations. The discussion of the honest, hardworking (Gulnara), looking out for the best int erests of her country, likely irks the many business people who have been crushe d by Karimova and her greed as well as the general public, who view her as somet hing of a robber baron, one dispatch reads. But recent tweaks to Uzbekistan s Constitution have served only to fuel the spec ulation about her potential succession to the presidency. Karimov has one estran ged son from an earlier marriage and another daughter, who is not taken seriousl y as a successor. According to reforms approved by lawmakers in March, the Senate speaker would ta ke over the reins in the event of President Karimov being incapacitated and unab le to properly perform his duties, prompting talk that Karimova is being primed for that role. These rumors have been circulating and I think there are people lobbying on her b ehalf, but it is unclear what Islam Abduganiyevich (Karimov) himself thinks abou t all that, said Alexei Malashenko of the Carnegie Moscow Center. http://arabnews.com/lifestyle/offbeat/article502555.eceUzbek first

-------Dutch govt to ban Islamic face-covering veils 17 sept 2011 AMSTERDAM: The Dutch government said on Friday it will ban face-covering veils w orn by some Muslim women because these flout the Dutch way of life and culture. Prime Minister Mark Rutte also announced tougher rules for immigrants and asylum -seekers wanting Dutch nationality who, in future, must show they have earned in come and have not received financial assistance or benefits for at least three y ears. The countrys reputation as relatively easy on immigration has changed over the pa st decade, reflecting voter concerns over the large number of Muslim immigrants. The government believes the wearing of clothing that completely or almost entirel y covers the face is fundamentally at odds with public life, where people are re cognized by their faces, the government said in a statement on Friday. Face-covering clothing prevents this and goes against the principles of equality between men and women, especially women. The new measures reflect the influence wielded by populist politician Geert Wild ers, whose anti-Islam, anti-immigration Freedom Party is the third-largest in pa rliament. Wilders has a pact with the minority coalition government to provide crucial sup port in parliament in exchange for tougher policies on Islam and immigration fro m non-Western countries. The Liberal-Christian Democrat coalition government has already faced tough oppo sition from Wilders Freedom Party over its support for euro zone bailouts, and ne eds to keep it on side in order to push ahead with crucial budget cuts. The government said it did not consider the ban on face-covering veils a restric tion of religious freedom, but that even if it was, it was necessary and justifie d in the interest of protecting the character and way of life in the Netherlands . The proposals will first be presented to the council of state, the administrativ e court, and then to parliament. No time frame was given, but Wilders has said he hopes to introduce the ban on f ace-covering veils this year or next. Arabic-style niqabs which leave the eyes uncovered and Afghan-style burqas that cover the face with a cloth grid are far less commonly seen on the streets of th e Netherlands than Muslim headscarves which leave the face exposed. http://arabnews.com/world/article502542.ece -------Two Muslims shot dead at prayers in Thai south mosque 17 sept 2011

YALA, Thailand: Suspected insurgents walked into a packed mosque and shot dead t wo Muslims in a brazen attack during Friday prayers in Thailands rebellious deep south, police said. The victims were a police officer and a defense volunteer and nearly 100 people witnessed the killings in Yala province by four Muslims believed to be separatis ts. Ethnic Malay Muslims form the majority of the population in Thailands three south ernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, where an insurgency has claim ed nearly 4,800 lives since 2006. The main targets for the shadowy militants are members of the security forces, t eachers and government officials, but Muslims are often killed for working for t he Thai state or acting as informants. The region was an independent sultanate a century ago before it became part of m ostly Buddhist Thailand. Shootings in mosques have happened several times in the three provinces. In June 2009, 11 Muslims were killed at prayer at the Al-Furqan mosque in Narath iwat. Many Muslims and rights groups believed that attack was carried out by Bud dhist vigilantes. No one has been charged with the killings. Fridays killings in Yala came a day after five paramilitary rangers were shot dea d in an ambush in Pattani province after the pickup truck they were riding in wa s hit by a bomb. The rubber-rich region borders Malaysia and is just a few hours by car from some of Thailands best-known tourist beaches such as Krabi and Phuket. However, the n ear-daily shootings and bombings have been concentrated in the three provinces a nd neighboring Songkhla. http://arabnews.com/world/article502516.ece -------15 killed in Syria as pressure mounts on Bashar al Assad 17 sept 2011 DAMASCUS: Security forces in Syria shot dead at least 15 people in operations ac ross the country on Friday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, as pre ssure mounted on the regime to end the crackdown.
