Diffusion: The movement of Solute molecules from a solution with higher concentration
of solute to a solution with lower concentration of solute.

Factors that affect Diffusion rate:

1. Concentration.
2. Medium of dispersion (dispersal).
3. Molecular Weight (size) Mwt : (inverse relationship )

Osmosis: The movement of Solvent molecules from a solution with higher solvent
concentration to solution with lower solvent concentration through a Semi-permeable
membrane

When we compare between two solutions or between the cell and its environment, there
are three types:
For Osmosis there must be two conditions
- Hypertonic Solution: This solution contains higher ……………………………..
concentration of solute molecules than the other.  Two solutions with different
- Isotonic Solution: This solution contains equal concentrations

 Semi-permeable membrane.
concentration to the other or to its environment.
- Hypotonic concentration This solution contains lower …………………
concentration of solute than the other or its environment.

- Hypotonic : cell contain less water than the

solution (water goes from the outside to the
cell)
- Isotonic : cell contain the same and solution
concentration of solute
- Hypertonic : the cell contain more water than
the solution (water goes from the cell to the
outside)

Note: plant cell is not burst or shrink because of the In hypertonic Solution The distance between
presence of cell wall which gives the cell more cell membrane and cell wall is decreased.
resistance to the increase or decrease of water content.
In Hypotonic solution The distance between
cell membrane and cell wall is increased.
