PACE+
Pipeline Analysis and Calculation Environment
PACE+ is an online tool developed for and released by the PE100+ Association. The purpose of this tool
is to assist industry professionals in the evaluation and selection of PE100+ pipe for pressurized water
distribution and transmission main systems by completing design calculations. In addition to operating
pressures, PACE+ considers recurring and occasional transient surges and the design fatigue life of the
pipeline in the evaluation process. The calculation methodology of PACE+ is an implementation of the
existing standards (IGN 4-37-02 / IGN 4-32-18 / EN 12201-2 / ISO 4427-2) provided by eTrenchless
Group Inc. For more information, or to provide feedback/comments, please contact

Assumptions
+ Users can change the default values per project requirements
+ The UK Water industry Specifications for PE pipes referred to in the IGN 4-32-18 and IGN 4-37-02 documents
have now been superseded and are replaced by the EN 12201-2 and ISO 4427-2 Standards which specify pipes
of at least the same quality and toughness, if not better.
+ For Head Loss, PACE+ defaults to using the Darcy-Weisbach Friction Factor with an absolute pipe rougness
coefficient of 0.01 mm. The Colebrook-White equation is used to determine the friction factor in the transition
region between smooth and fully turbulent flow. The empirical Hazen-Williams formula is also an option.
+ For Recurring Surge, PACE+ defautls to 1.5 m/s; the software allows for a 1 - 2.5 m/s range.
+ For Occasional Surge, PACE+ defautls to 3.0 m/s; the software allows for a 2 - 5 m/s range.
+ For Operating Pressure, PACE+ defautls to 6 bar - which is the average operating pressure in Europe; the
software allows for a 2 - 25 bar range.
+ For Anticipated Recurring Surges, PACE+ defaults to 56 cycles per day; this results in about 2 million cycles for a
100-year design life. The minimum allowable value in PACE+ is the default 56 cycles/day.
+ For Temperature, PACE+ defaults to 20°C which is the temperature used for design basis and lifetime prediction
in Europe; the software allows 20-45°C; consult the manufacturer for temperatures greater than 45°C.
+ For Design Life, PACE+ defaults to 100 years; the software allows for the minimum required design life of 50
years as per IGN 4-37-02, but in practice the design life for PE100+ pipes will be in excess of 100 years.
+ For Design Life, tests carried out in the standard are based on extrapolations to a 50 year design life. More recent
testing done by PE100+ manufacturers have demonstrated that a 100 year life is a conservative assumption
where normal disinfection chemicals are used (i.e., NOT Chlorine Dioxide).
+ Temperature derating factors for PE100+ pipe, in accordance with IGN 4-32-18 (Section 4.2.2.1), increase by
1.3% per °C above 20°C.
+ For PE100+ pipe, the design fatigue life is determined using fatigue curves provided in Marshall, G.P., Brogden,
S: Final report of Pipeline Innovation Contract to UKWIR, 1997 using a 2:1 design factor.
+ Occasional transients caused by emergency pump and valve operations are usually severe. The system should
be designed to withstand positive and negative pressures caused by these emergency operations. Water column
separation may occur if the negative pressure is reduced to the vapor pressure of the liquid. Rejoining of the
separated water column typically results in a large pressure rise, which will possibly damage the pipe system.
Whenever possible, water column separation should be avoided
+ These are preliminary calculations for product comparison only, not for final design. Qualified professionals should
be contracted to consider all aspects of the design for pressure pipe design.
