Abstract
New mandatory measures to cut the Carbon intensity of International
Shipping has been adopted by International Maritime Organization
(IMO), including EEXI which is the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship
index. Its attained value depends on the design features of the vessel
and all the ships will have to calculate it by 1 st January 2023. Authors
suggest few ways some of which are conceptual in nature to achieve
the required EEXI for existing ships and EEDI for new ships. The
methods suggested by the authors include Energy Power
Management. For the new ships and the ships which will come in
future, there are going to be lot of advanced features implemented,
concerning the hull shape and improved paints and various other
techniques for wake equalization and flow separation, however for
existing and older vessels below mentioned points should be noted for
ensuring ship energy efficiency improvements such as knowing the
importance of Stoichiometric ratio and maintenance of the same for
better power management, Ballasting and De-ballasting as far as
possible done by gravity, De-rating of main engine. The Authors
make a rational assessment taking real time examples of 2 ships in
which necessary EEXI is achieved by de-rating of the engines.
Conceptual suggestion also includes Hull Air Lubrication Method -
For Drag Reduction on Ocean Going Vessels. The paper concludes
with Last but not the least, monitoring and measuring the performance
of main engine is of utmost importance at regular intervals of time.
This would help to know any issue in advance and provide sufficient
time to take remedial measures.
