TITLE OF RESEARCH EFFICACY OF LOCALIZED STRATEGIC INTERVENTION
MATERIALS OF SOCIAL SCIENCE SUBJECTS AMONG SENIOR
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
DIVISION Batangas
DISTRICT Taysan

Context and Rationale

The field of social studies examines how people interact and how societies

function. It is taught in elementary and higher education programs all around the world.

The integrated study of social sciences and humanities to foster civic competency is what

the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS, 1994, p. 3) described as social studies.

The social studies curriculum in the classroom includes a coordinated, systematic study

of topics from anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law,

philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as pertinent

material from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. Social studies'

overarching goal is to help young people make well-informed decisions for the common

good as members of a multicultural, democratic community in a dependent society

(NCSS, 1994).

The social studies curriculum in the Philippines is focused on creating Filipino

learners who are 21st century ready, functionally literate, and holistically developed. The
main goal of social studies is to help students become informed citizens who value social

and historical topics and who are "investigative, critical thinkers, responsible, productive,

environment-friendly, patriotic, and values-oriented" (Department of Education, 2016, p.

3). Social studies play a key role in 21st century society because they provide a

framework for better understanding problems and issues that are both locally rooted and

globally interconnected.

All people, especially youngsters, have suffered greatly as a result of the COVID-

19 pandemic's heaviness. Lack of in-person instruction and the introduction of new,

partially unfamiliar learning delivery methods have hurt their academic performance.

One of the difficulties teachers have is motivating their students to learn. Learning

Social Science and history is a challenging endeavor. Unfortunately, students fail to see

Social Science as an interesting or fascinating subject (Guimba, Aquino, & Abbas, 2016).

Because the issue seemed unrelated to their personal lives, several people considered it

dull (Milo, 2015).

According to (Wayne, 2018), social studies teaching and learning should focus on

exposing the elements of our daily lives that are taken for granted and making them the

subject of exploration.

Regarding DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015 "Policy Guidelines on Classroom

Assessment for the K–12 Basic Education Program," learners must complete formative

and summative assessments. If a student's RFG is below 75, the subject teacher must

reassess the student right away to identify any learning gaps or least-mastered

competencies. To ensure that the learner transitions to the next grade level or semester,
the reassessment results must form the basis for planning and designing an immediate

instructional intervention.

Regarding this memorandum, Bilogo Integrated National High School has

developed a localized strategic intervention material in social sciences that will enhance

learning, remediate the least learned competencies and help improve their academic

performance in social science subjects.

In this study, the researchers aims to test the efficacy in the use of localized

strategic intervention material in improving the academic performance of Grade 11/12

students. This study also aims to determine if there is a significant difference between the

academic performance of students before using the localized strategic intervention

material in social science and after using the localized strategic intervention material in

social science.

Action Research Questions

This study aims to determine the efficacy of the use of Strategic Intervention

Materials in Social Science subjects among Senior High School students of Bilogo

Integrated National High School.

This research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the performance of the students in Social Science before using

localized Strategic Intervention Material?

2. What is the performance of the students in Social Science after using

localized Strategic Intervention Material?

3. Is there a significant difference in the learners' performance in Social

Science before and after using localized Strategic Intervention Material?

Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

The pandemic COVID-19 created challenges and difficulties on everyone’s

daily living routine. The Department of Education issued Deped Order no. 12 s. 2020

in response to the Covid 19 public health emergency. As a response to this Deped

order, Bilogo Integrated National High School implemented modular distance learning

from the year 2020-2021.

As the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, the face to face classes has resumed.

Social science teachers of Bilogo Integrated National High School has seen a

decrease in the student’s performance in social science.

As an intervention strategy, in line with Deped Order no. 35 s. 2016, Bilogo

Integrated National High School drafted a localized strategic intervention material for

their least mastered skill in social science.

Below is the sample a drafted localized strategic intervention material.

Action Research Methods

A. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

The subjects of the study are the senior high school students of Bilogo Integrated

National High School who take social science subjects during the S.Y. 2022-2023. Senior high

school students that take social science subjects will participate in this study. The researchers

will use the total population sampling method to determine the number of participants in this study.

A total of 130 senior high school students will be chosen as respondents of the study. Only those

senior high school students that take social science subjects will participate in this study.

B. Data Gathering Methods

In this study, the researchers will use an experimental type of data-gathering

method to determine the efficacy of the use of localized strategic intervention

materials in improving the academic performance of senior high school students of

Bilogo Integrated National High School that takes social science subjects. The

researchers will formulate an assessment tool to determine the academic performance

of senior high school students of Bilogo Integrated National High School who take social

science subjects.

The researchers will administer an assessment as a pretest to find out the

academic performance of senior high school students before using the localized

strategic intervention materials. The researchers will also use the same assessment as a

posttest to determine the academic performance of senior high school students of

Bilogo Integrated National High School who takes social science subjects.

To determine the academic performance of the students, the calculation of

mean, standard deviation and MPS will be used.

After the necessary data was gathered with the use of instruments, statistical

tools will be used to determine the efficacy of the use of localized strategic intervention

materials in improving the academic performance of senior high school students of

Bilogo Integrated National High School that takes social science subjects.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The following tools will be used in analyzing and interpreting the data:

Mean. This will be used in analyzing the academic performance of senior high

school students before and after the use of localized strategic intervention materials.

Standard Deviation. This will be used in analyzing the academic performance of

senior high school students before and after the use of localized strategic intervention

materials.

Mean Percentage Scores. This will be used in analyzing the academic

performance of senior high school students before and after the use of localized

strategic intervention materials.

T-Test. This will be used to determine the significant difference of the academic

performance of senior high school students before and after the use of localized

strategic intervention materials.
