Class 11 : Conics

Q. Solve the following (3M each)

1. Find equations of parabola;
a) Vertex (0, 0), passing through (2, 3) and axis is along x-axis.
b) Vertex (0, 0); focus (-2, 0)
c) Focus (6, 0); directrix x = -6

2. find the coordinates of the foci, the vertices, the length of major axis, the minor axis, the
eccentricity and the length of the latus rectum of the ellipse. 36x2 + 4y2 = 144.

3. Show that the perpendicular segments drawn from the foci to any tangent line to the
ellipse x2/25 + y2/16 = 1 is equal to 16.

4. Show that the line x - y = 5 is a tangent to the ellipse 9x 2 + 16y2 = 144. Find the point of
contact.

5. Show that the locus of the point of intersection of tangents at two points on an ellipse
whose eccentric angles differ by constant, is an ellipse.

6. Find equations of tangents to the curve 5x2 - 4y2 = 20 if tangents are parallel to the line
3x+2y+12 = 0.

7. If the line 3x- 4y = k touches curve x2/5 - 4y2/5 = 1, find value of k.

8. if e and e’ are eccentricities of hyperbola and its conjugate hyperbola, then prove that e -2 +
(e’)-2 = 1

9. Draw neat labelled diagram of Conjugate hyperbola. State end points of its latus rectum
and parametric equation.

10. A tangent having slope -1/2 to the ellipse 3x 2 + 4y2 = 12 intersects X and Y axis in the
points A and B respectively. If O is origin, Find the area of Δ AOB
