Energy Sources in Bangladesh
 Natural Gas

In Bangladesh Natural gas is one of the most important sources

of energy that accounts for 73% of the commercial energy of the
country. Till now 23 gas fields have been discovered in the
country. As of December 2010 the estimated proven recoverable
reserve was 15.32 TCF, total 9.43 TCF gas has already been
produced leaving only 5.89 TCF of recoverable energy.

79 wells in 17 gas fields are in production. Average production of

natural gas was about 2000 MMCFD (Million cubic feet per day).

Daily gas demand is 2500 MMCFD having shortage of about 500

MMCFD.

TCF-Trillion Cubic Feet

Energy Sources in Bangladesh
 Petroleum

Bangladesh imports about 1.2 million metric tons of crude oil along
with 2.6 million tons of refined petroleum products per annum.

Locally liquid fuels in terms of condensate and other liquid products

are also extracted from different gas fields.

Major consumer of liquid fuel is transport followed by agriculture,

industry and commercial that is mostly met by imported liquid fuel.
Energy Sources in Bangladesh
 LPG

These gaseous hydrocarbons are condensed to the liquid state at

normal temperature, stored and transported as liquids at <200psi.
LPG is mostly made up of propane. It is mainly used for cooking and
also in vehicle as fuel.
There are two main sources from which LPG are produced

A) Wet natural gas and B) Refinery operations (Crude oil)

- 22500 Mtons of LPG are produced from Refinery and Gas
condensate.
- Bangladesh imports in private sector 73000 Mtons of LPG yearly.
Energy Sources in Bangladesh
 Coal

In Bangladesh, five coal deposits namely Barapukuria, Fulbari,

Dighipara (Dinajpur district), Khalashpur (in Rangpur district) and
Jamalgonj (Joypurhat district) were discovered. Total in-situ proven +
probable reserve is 3300 Million Tonnes.

So far, only coal field i.e. Barapukuria has been developed. Commercial
production of Barapukuria coal mine commenced from 2005 with the
targeted capacity of one million metric tons per year and present
average production is 0.6-0.8 Million tonnes per year.
Power generation in Bangladesh
 Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is responsible for
major portion of generation and distribution of electricity mainly in
urban areas except Dhaka and West Zone of the country. The Board
is under the Power Division of the Ministry of power, Energy and
Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh.

 BPDB has taken a massive capacity expansion plan to add about

11600 MW Generation capacity in next 5 years to achieve 24000 MW
Capacity according to PSMP-2010 by 2021 with the aim to provide
quality and reliable electricity to all the people of Country for desired
economic and social development. The power system has been
expanded to keep pace with the fast growing demand.
