A SURVIVAL STORY

Name:
Krislly Pamela de León Cazzali

1. What was the gist of the story?

It’s an interview with the sailor Jane about her experience and how she managed to survive when
she crossed the Pacific Ocean and her yacht was wrecked, drifting in a place called Doldrums,
thanks to her mistake in losing her G.P.S.

2. Mention at least 10 details of the story

• She had crossed the Pacific west to east and was bound for Panama

• It was four o'clock in the morning when her yacht called "The Belle Trieste" hit with
something that she only can assume was either a whale or a log floating in the water

• When her yacht began to sink, she threw into the lifeboat a couple of extra supplies in
addition to what she always had stored in it, enough for five days of food and six days of
water, rationing it quite a bit. But she forgot the most important thing: the G.P.S. device.
because a few days ago she took out the G.P.S. of this boat and put it on his yacht, sinking
with both

• She was slap bang in the middle of a huge area of ocean known as the Doldrums.

• The area where she stayed was a vast expanse of sea around the equator where all the
Earth's winds sort of cancel each other out and can have day upon day of dead calm

• Despite her disturbing situation, she remained calm, having 10 years of experience as a
sailor, for her she had only had bad luck, she always tried to see the positive side of things
and downplayed everything

• After 11 days Jane began to lose hope

• Angelo Ortega, pilot of the coast guard, was like an angel to her because he had been
looking for her for about two days and returned to the area about five times

• If Angelo hadn't found her then, another plane would have taken over his search in a
different area of the ocean, about 15 miles to the west
• In the end, Jane became friends with Angelo and he is going to teach her to fly

3. According to your partner’s comments what was the speaker´s stance?

Based on how the speaker expresses herself in this case Jane and considering the fact that she
was narrating an experience of her own, I have come to the conclusion that speaker's stance is:
certainty.
That means the speaker expresses confidence as to what she or he is saying.
Because she remembers with certainty everything that she lived through in that experience and
she hasn’t hesitations when saying that she could have died because of her mistake, and she
speaks with pride of the fact that she was able to survive.

4. What was the moment that called the most your attention
The part where she narrates how, despite having almost everything against her, she always saw
it positively, even making jokes about it and although in the end she began to lose hope, not
having lost control at the beginning helped her lengthen her time of survival.
