Garden glow-up Pretty in pink

I wanted to share a project that I’ve been
doing in my garden. We had a lean-to When we moved in, our front door looked

made around 20 metres of bunting. It only
took a couple of hours to cut and sew and it’s

and so easy to make.

Freshen up your home with our
handy tips and tricks
HOW TO... keep your plants watered
Long days of socialising and holidays are all
part of the fun of the warmer months, but it’s
also the time of year when your plants are most
susceptible to hot, dry conditions with little
watering – and no one wants to come home
to dead plants! Beat the heat and ensure leafy
greenery by following these top tips…
• If you move houseplants away from windows and
direct sun, they will lose water less quickly through
evaporation. A thorough watering should keep most
happy for around a week if you’re going away. For
thirstier plants, use self-watering stakes, which you
fill up with water and simply stick into the soil.
• It may be worth buying self-watering pots if you
regularly forget to water houseplants. These have
a layer underneath the plant pot that you fill with
water (often through a tube at the top of the pot)
from which the plant can slowly and regularly drink.
To recreate this effect, simply fill up shallow trays
with water and place your inner pots on the tray.
• For outdoor pots, try drip-irrigation watering
systems, which attach to a hosepipe and deliver a
timed stream of water. Some can be set on automatic
timers, but others need manually checking. These
systems are sometimes exempt from hosepipe bans
(but check this with your water company, as well as
any conditions they have in place).
• Budding gardeners should invest in a couple
of water butts to store rainwater when there are
showers – you can buy some for less than £30,
or look online for second-hand options.

it too small to make a noticeable
difference to a large room, but it

air output wasn’t very strong. On
the upside, it was very quiet to run.

Finding the perfect furry, scaly or feathered
friend involves thoughtful reflection. Consider
your lifestyle, time availability, space, allergies,
and finances – you may be surprised at the
breed that’s right for you. Some animals, such
as guinea pigs, need company, so you’ll need
two. Volunteering at a local shelter can help
solidify your choice. Take your time, gather
information, and make an informed decision.

2 ADOPT DON’T SHOP
There are thousands of pets that need a good
home (summer is kitten season, so now’s a
great time to rehome a young cat), and it’s
much more affordable to adopt a pet through
a trusted organisation than to buy one.
Start your search at reputable animal rescue
charities like Dogs Trust, the RSPCA, Blue
Cross, and Battersea. People relinquish pets for
all sorts of reasons, including time constraints,
inexperience, or financial challenges – not
solely due to behavioural issues. Find a rescue
and re-homing centre near you at adch.org.uk.
Beware of adopting pets online or via social
media, as it’s increasingly challenging to verify
the legitimacy of adverts and sometimes, the
person behind the pet. Never pay a deposit for
a pet you have not met in person.
3 BEST OF BREEDERS
If you have specific reasons for wanting to
buy a pet, conduct thorough research to
find reputable and responsible breeders
who prioritise the health and welfare of
their animals. Visit the facility in person and
request to meet the parents of the pet you’re
interested in. A good breeder will provide
documentation including health records and
vaccination certificates, and will be transparent
about their animal’s lineage and health history.

Do you struggle to keep up with payments on your
credit card? Luckily, there are some smart ways of
getting your costs down.
• If you’re always paying interest on your credit card,
consider a zero per cent balance transfer. This is when
you get a new card to pay off the debt from the old one
or from multiple cards. You still owe what you owe, but
without the interest added on. This can also include store
cards and it means your new card has a zero per cent

Lily and Daniel found a way to have the kitchen that they
both dreamed of, thanks to Wren

Lily says that Daniel is particularly talented
when it comes to design. ‘There was no room

making it pretty,’ she says. Although when
it came to the kitchen, the pair had different
creative visions. Lily dreamed of a space
with a strong industrial vibe featuring an
exposed brick wall, colours to complement the
brick slips, a Belfast sink and oak worktops.
Daniel, meanwhile, wanted shiny and modern
laminate surfaces and was pushing for blue-
coloured cupboards and quartz worktops.
While they may have had different opinions
on the look of the kitchen, they both agreed
that the main feature of the room should be
the island and, says Lily, ‘a place where our
guests could sit, while also segregating the
space from the cooking zone’.
DREAM EXPERIENCE
Knowing that they needed advice on
designing and styling the room – and inspired
by the positive reviews of Wren Kitchens
they’d seen on Instagram – the couple headed
to their local Wren showroom. They were
very satisfied with what was on offer and
felt reassured immediately as they received
a great quote. ‘We knew that the quality
of the products wasn’t going to be matched
elsewhere,’ explains Lily.
The couple’s Wren designer helped them
to decide the best options to suit their needs,
showing the pair how to optimise the space.
Wren’s Virtual Reality Experience gave
Lily and Daniel the opportunity to see the
proposed design and how it would look, and
work, once built. ‘It was amazing,’ says Lily,
who recalls that the VR Experience felt like
stepping into the real kitchen which was very
reassuring for them both.
The designer also helped them find the
perfect solution to their aesthetic differences,
proposing that they could add a wood worktop
to the island, while having quartz in the rest of
the kitchen. ‘The designer was so helpful,’ Lily
says, ‘she showed us some ideas of two-tone

Top of Lily’s wish list was
a Belfast sink. ‘It reminds
me of my childhood
home,’ she says

the design… We now have a marble-effect
quartz, which we loved as soon as we saw it
in the showroom.’ They also added in wooden
scaffold board shelves to complement the
industrial feel.
As well as resolving the design and aesthetic
of their much-loved new kitchen, Lily and
Daniel also discovered that they could get
all their appliance needs through Wren, and
a cooker hood, induction hob, double oven
and fridge-freezer were incorporated into the
package. Lily was particularly happy with
the hob as its sleek, minimalistic design sits
perfectly with her love of the industrial look.
‘It’s very easy to clean and fits wonderfully
with the quartz worktop,’ she says.
HEART OF THE HOME
Lily and Daniel were delighted with the
service they received from Wren; from the
moment they first entered the showroom to
the day of delivery. ‘Wren was very caring
and considerate around our needs and worked
out timings that best suited us, which was
amazing!’ says Lily. ‘The experience was
flawless, we had fantastic communication, and
nothing was a problem for Wren!’
The couple are even more delighted now
that they can enjoy their dream kitchen every
day. ‘We spend all of our time in here now, in
fact we barely use our living room,’ says Lily.
‘Sometimes on a Friday evening we might
make cocktails and sit at the island and just
enjoy ourselves! But the best is when we have
friends and family over; it’s just such a nice
space to be,’ she says.

‘We restored period features

and added our own twist’
Stacey Hawkes brought a tired bedroom back to life by reinstating the original
features, and elevating the look with luxe bedding and statement wallpaper

H
aving just completed a four-year-long
renovation of their previous home,
BEFORE
and with their youngest child, Henry,
only three months old at the time, Stacey
and Chris Hawkes really weren’t looking
to move. However, they happened to drive
past this beautiful house for sale and Stacey
convinced Chris to take a look. ‘Although it
had evidently once been a great family home,
the place had been left empty for many years,’
says Stacey, ‘but we fell in love with it as soon
as we stepped inside. The interior was in a real
state, but it was crying out to be loved again,
so we decided another project was on the
cards.’ Every room needed a refurb, so they
just needed to decide where to start.

STEP INSIDE..

get a plasterer in to skim them, which ate
into our budget.’ After sanding down all of
the woodwork ready for painting, the couple

‘I was determined to restore some old-
school charm into the room, and installing
a decorative period fireplace was part of that
process,’ says Stacey. She managed to find
one from a reclamation yard for only £50,
and picked up an original fire surround on
Facebook Marketplace. Both were in need
of a facelift, so she cleaned them and then
gave them each a lick of paint.
‘We knocked into the chimney breast to
allow the fireplace to be set flush against the
wall, but the amount of rubble and thick black
dust it created was unbelievable,’ explains
Stacey, ‘and there were a few moments when
I thought, “why did we do this?”’ Fortunately,
though, the couple did this part of the
makeover before they began decorating, so
nothing was damaged in the process.

THE FINAL DETAILS

Having already installed a reclaimed fireplace,
Stacey also added decorative ceiling roses and
coving to restore the room’s period charm.
Then, it was time to inject some colour.
‘Initially we painted the room using dark
blues, which felt rich and elegant at the time,

‘Mum and I loved creating
this boho scheme together’
When her mum Julia decided to renovate the family home, 18-year-old Maya’s
bedroom had a much-needed overhaul to give it a new, laid-back look

which my family bought in 2006.
WHAT WAS UPDATED? My brand-
new bedroom was a blank canvas
that I was able to decorate from
scratch with fitted wardrobes,
wooden furniture, clever storage,
and funky accessories.

makeover was part of a larger

when my parents renovated the

rowing up, Maya James always had the
smallest bedroom in the house, and
she was craving more storage space
and a quiet place to study. In January 2022,
though, her parents knocked down walls
upstairs and created bigger bedrooms for
everyone, including Maya.
After a year of building work the room was
ready to be decorated and, with the help of
her mum, Julia, who runs Jasmine Interiors
(@jasmine_interiors), Maya set about creating
a space that reflects her interior style.
THE PROJECT
Maya’s new room was a blank canvas with
freshly plastered walls. ‘My previous bedroom
had been decorated with a tropical theme,
with lots of palm prints and jungle vibes that
I had outgrown. This time I wanted my room
to have a grown-up look,’ she explains. ‘I
started a Pinterest board of decorating ideas,
which featured lots of oranges, rusts and
peachy colours, organic shapes, and natural
textures. With the help of my mum, who is an
interior designer, we decorated my bedroom
inspired by these colours.’
As part of the design process, Maya and
her mum planned a trip to London to gather
ideas for her room. ‘We went to some of my
favourite stores like Urban Outfitters and
Anthropologie and headed straight to the
homeware departments. This is where I first
discovered the bohemian trend, and I fell in
love with so many accessories!’ she says. ‘For
my birthday, Mum treated me to the curved
shelving unit, textured throw and tapestry
cushions to finish off the look of my room.’
WHAT WE DID
As Maya had been so inspired by colour, the
first step was to paint the walls in neutral
tones, then a burnt-orange textured wallpaper
was hung on a chimney breast to create a
feature behind the bed. The previous bedroom
lacked storage space, so a key part of the
design was to have fitted wardrobes that run

make a handy study space. It’s been
paired with a Lloyd Loom-style desk
chair that works beautifully with the
new boho feel of Maya’s room
decorator, deliveries, and timescales while I
focused on organising my room, says Maya.
‘I have so many clothes, bags and shoes that
can easily take over, so the built-in cupboards
keep my clutter under control and help me
feel more organised.’
Next, Maya and her mum positioned the
furniture, with a modern, four-poster-style
bed taking centre stage. They also placed a
large desk in one of the alcoves to create a
study area, with a DIY pinboard above it.

The makeover was slow-going because it was
part of a larger renovation of the rest of the
house. ‘During the project, I was sleeping
downstairs,’ Maya explains. ‘So, Mum and I
were keen for my new bedroom to be finished
so I could escape the builders’ dust and have a
quiet place to study.’ Once she was finally able
to move in, Maya got to work styling her new

look of the room together was one of the best
parts for me,’ she says. ‘I’m so proud of what
Mum and I have created. It’s going to appear
on her website as a showcased project.’

‘It’s now a space where we

can truly relax and unwind’
From ambient lighting to soothing colours and luxurious bedding, Laurie Davidson
has optimised every detail of her new bedroom for a good night’s sleep

‘Even though the bedroom is smaller since

larger,’ says Laurie. ‘I think that’s down to
the clean lines of the furniture we chose
and the fact that it’s uncluttered – mostly
thanks to the storage bed from Next,

my boyfriend Wayne, 49, an IT
technician, and our two cats, Chas

detached house in Ewell, Surrey.

WHAT WAS UPDATED? We gave

our master bedroom a brand-new
look, with a feature panelled wall
and new furniture.

WHY THE CHANGE? After having

a dormer extension, our main
bedroom needed redecorating as
we’d had part of the space taken to

accommodate an upstairs hallway.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? We were
without a bedroom for a while, as
the extension was being worked
on, but once we could get cracking
on the room it took around a
month to complete.

aving finally bitten the bullet and
taken on an upstairs renovation to
give their three-bed house an extra
two bedrooms and a shower room, Laurie
Davidson and her boyfriend Wayne spent
two months sleeping in their dining room
while the work was carried out. ‘Our home
was completely upside-down for a while,’ says
Laurie. ‘We had to move out of our bedroom
as the roof was being taken off and walls
were coming down. It was chaos, but we just
focused on the fact it wouldn’t be forever.
Plus, it gave us the chance to rethink what we
wanted from our bedroom in terms of décor.’
THE PROJECT
Some space was ‘borrowed’ from the master
bedroom in order to create a hallway for the
new extension, so the couple were keen to
create a tranquil scheme in what was now
a slightly smaller room. ‘The part of the
bedroom that we lost was originally home to
our wardrobes, but as we’d turned our second
bedroom into a dressing room, we didn’t really

finished scheme, with the couple opting for
natural oak panels on a black felt backing
from Naturewall. ‘I wasn’t convinced about
doing the whole wall at first, but I’m so glad
we did as they’ve totally transformed the look
of the room,’ says Laurie

room was still a good size and our plan was
to make it feel really calm, with soft colours,
good storage and a minimalist design.’
WHAT WE DID
‘I started by thinking about the elements
that we’d need in order to focus on it being
beneficial for sleep, and to incorporate a
wellness aspect,’ says Laurie. ‘For example, I
wanted it to feel uncluttered, so a storage bed
was key as a spot to keep all our bedding.
I found the perfect ottoman bed design in
Next – it has really unfussy, clean lines that
work with the minimalist look I was after.’
After adding hard flooring and painting
the walls in a soft green shade, the couple
chose decorative slatted-wood panels from
Naturewall for one wall, to bring warmth
and a focal point to the scheme. ‘I love how
the wood works with the green tones in the
room,’ says Laurie. ‘It’s given it a very natural,
textured feel, and it was really easy to put up
as it comes in ready-made panels.’

With no wardrobes in the bedroom, this
cabinet is handy for storing candles and
books, while on top Laurie has displayed
accessories and a little pamper tray with
sleep spray, night cream and a diffuser
Next up was a faux wall that Wayne built for
the TV, complete with built-in shelves at the
side as a spot to add some decorative touches.
The couple also upgraded the light switches
and sockets to luxurious antique-bronze
designs, complete with USB ports for ease.

‘The worst part about the process for me was
having to wait for the whole renovation to be
completed before we could start decorating,’
recalls Laurie. ‘It felt like it took forever,
although in hindsight it gave us time to
research good deals and we managed to get
our materials for relatively good prices.’
A highlight for Laurie is the convenience
of the smart lighting, which makes it super-

the bed rather than bedside lamps, and we
can turn them on and off independently via
voice activation and set them to exactly the
brightness we want,’ Laurie says.

Laurie chose side tables, rather than bedside
cabinets, for a ‘cleaner’ look – ‘plus they
stop us from hoarding bits and bobs in the
drawers!’ she laughs – and a rattan cabinet fits
neatly into an alcove for useful extra storage.

Jade Severs transformed a dated house with an awkward layout into one that works
for family life, with an open-plan living space, practical storage and airy décor

ealising that they were never going to London, and initially found a four-bedroom

R afford a house in the London suburb

where they’d been living in a two-
bedroom flat, Jade and Jon Severs made the
decision to move south to the coast seven
years ago. ‘It was a big change, but one we
were happy to make. We’d had the boys, we
wanted a house with a garden, and we loved
the idea of being close to the sea,’ says Jade.
The couple settled on the town of Havant,
near Portsmouth, as it’s an easy commute to
Edwardian semi, which they totally renovated
and made their own. ‘I have to say it did put
me off period properties though, with the
amount there was to do,’ says Jade. ‘I don’t
think I’d take on a property of that age again.’
Jade and Jon squared off the house, adding
an extension on the second floor to create an
extra bedroom. Meanwhile, a new drive, with
Tegula paving by Marshalls, is complemented
by the smart front door in Agate Grey

A CHANGE OF DIRECTION
Having also welcomed twin girls, they were
now a family of six, but their busy lives were
disrupted by some bad news about Jade’s
health, which also led to a change of career.
‘I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2018
and everything went on hold, but thankfully
I got the all-clear a year later,’ she says. ‘I’d
been working as a wedding photographer,
but really my passion was interiors, and it was
time to be brave, so I managed to get a job
with the John Lewis & Partners design team.’
After working with the company for two
years, Jade decided to strike out on her own.
‘It was hard juggling work and four kids, and
I wanted to be able to work from home at
times. Jon encouraged me to draw up a proper
business plan, and I finally launched Jade Lisa
Interiors,’ says Jade. Her first project was her
own new house. ‘We decided we wanted more
space but to stay local, and in lockdown the
property market down here boomed, with
people wanting to move out of cities. We sold
our home in a day, so we were cash buyers and
in a good position.’
Jade had decided this was the road she
wanted to live on and leafleted the owners,

‘With four children I’ve gone for a tough,

sacrifice style for practicality’
saying they were a local family who could
move quickly. ‘We were contacted by someone
whose sale had fallen through and we rushed
over. Although the house was dated and
the flow wasn’t right, we could see the huge
potential. It has a large garden, is detached
and on a quiet road. It took six months to
complete, but it was worth it.’
The downstairs needed a major sort-out,
and Jade had a firm idea of what she wanted.
The couple consulted an architect to make
sure their ideas were achievable. ‘We wanted
to take one of the walls down to create a great
open-plan kitchen,’ says Jade. ‘The existing
galley kitchen was far too small and there was
a large, attached garage which wasn’t really
needed as there’s plenty of off-street parking.’
Plans were made to remove the wall and
create a large, open-plan space combining
dining and seating areas. A small section of

at first, but now he loves it,’ says Jade. ‘I herd
the children in here straight away and there’s
plenty of room in the IKEA Pax cupboards and

cushion. Machine-stitch the layers together
around all four sides of the cushion, using a
seam allowance of 2cm.
Trim the seam allowances to 1cm along

Colour-confident update

‘Filling every room with

bright décor brings me joy’
Interior designer Aurélien Farjon brought a dated-looking period home back to life
with a daring palette of rich jewel tones, lots of creative upcycles, and eclectic styling

E
very room of this Edwardian property
needed a revamp, but that certainly
didn’t put off interior designer and
stylist Aurélien Farjon (known as Réli) – in
fact, he relished the opportunity to put his
unique mark on it. Starting with the living
room, Réli and his husband ripped out
the tired old furnishings and filled every
space with mood-boosting colour, creative
hacks, and one-off finds. ‘When we moved
in, there was an ugly 1960s gas fireplace in
the front room – I couldn’t have it removed
fast enough!’ says Réli. Once it was gone, it
revealed the original tiled hearth, with pretty
brick-shaped tiles in navy tones, ‘and they
were nearly all intact! This was one of the
happiest discoveries of the entire renovation.
I cleaned them up, re-grouted them, and they
are now a standout feature in the new design.’

BACK TO BLACK
After the couple ripped out the old carpet,
they found that the wooden floors underneath
were in good condition. ‘As my husband is
allergic to dust mites, carpets are generally
a no-go,’ says Réli, ‘so I was delighted to be
able to use the original wooden floors without
much repair time or cost.’ Réli had been
dreaming of black painted wooden floors for
a while, ‘so I jumped at the opportunity!’ he
enthuses. ‘I used the Maison Deco Refresh
floor paint in Charcoal Black Satin. It is
a lovely tone of black with a hint of grey,

making it feel contemporary, and the satin
finish brings a lovely sheen which reflects the
sunlight and makes the whole room sing.’
Réli has an eye for a bargain, and loves
hunting down antique and vintage buys
on eBay and Vinterior to inject character
into his schemes. ‘I got the vintage wooden
mantelpiece on eBay for £8 and went to collect
it locally. A lick of paint and it looks as if it
has always been there,’ he says. ‘If you follow
me on socials, you will know that I am very
crafty and love to share my creations to inspire
others, from furniture upcycling to design
hacks, and wall paint effects of all kinds.’
WATCH THIS SPACE
While the living room just needed cosmetic
updates to make it shine, revamping the
kitchen and dining room proved to be a
bigger task. ‘The original layout of the kitchen
and dining room was so old-fashioned and
impractical, so we decided to reconfigure the
whole thing,’ says Réli. The couple started by
knocking down the wall between the dining
room and the kitchen to make it open-plan,
and blocked off the old kitchen entrance,
which allowed for more worktop space.
Then, they just needed to pick out a
kitchen, and found a classic design at IKEA.
‘My husband and I fitted it together,’ explains

Réli. ‘There are so many videos online to
help and encourage customers to fit the
cabinets themselves. We took our time, and
it was actually easier than we thought. We
went with IKEA as we have a store here in
Croydon, so it gave us the reassurance that we
could exchange or return items along the way.’
As the space leads out into the garden, Réli
wanted to dial up the indoor-outdoor feel. ‘I
painted the walls in a blue-green to match
the colours of the garden fence – it gives the
illusion of the dining room and garden being
part of one continuous space, especially when
the French doors are wide open in summer.
It’s heaven,’ he says. The flooring is a tile-
effect vinyl from Carpetright: ‘It has the look
of a statement tiled floor at a fraction of the
cost, and was much quicker to install.’
Before giving the bathroom a complete
overhaul, the couple had to decide what to
do with the large, wall-mounted cupboard
housing the water tank from the old boiler
system, which was taking up valuable space.
‘One of the trickiest parts of the renovation
was getting this removed without causing

any catastrophic leaks!’ says Réli. ‘The room
seemed so much bigger once it had gone. We
were able to totally reconfigure the layout
and make it feel much more spacious.’ Réli
recommends planning out the practicalities of
a new bathroom before deciding on the look.
‘When deciding where your shower will go,
make sure the wall is thick enough to embed
the pipework, or else you will have to plan to
build the wall out before tiling,’ he advises.
With the new layout sorted, Réli chose a
monochrome look, ‘keeping it chic but serene
at the same time, for a spa-style finish.’ In
fact, every room has a touch of black – one
of Réli’s designer tricks to create a cohesive
home: ‘It is a good idea to have a thread that
runs throughout the house. I’ve included
black accents in every room, which ties the
whole house together beautifully. It can be
a statement, like my painted mantelpiece, or
something simple like black metal shelving.’
HOLIDAY VIBES
In the bedrooms, Réli wanted to create a
luxe hotel feel, adding his own twist with
some clever DIYs and paintwork. ‘I’ve always
dreamt of a bedroom inspired by chic Parisian
hotels, so in the master bedroom I went for a
high-contrast scheme, pairing deep-teal walls
and a matt-black floor with a white faux-
leather bed and linen curtains.’ He also added
wall moulding from B&Q, cut to size and

Réli turned his attention from Paris
to the Arizona desert to create another
travel-inspired scheme in the guest room. ‘I
went for total escapism, giving my guests a
transporting place to stay when they come to
visit,’ he says. ‘I wanted to play with sunset
colours. I marked the shapes on the walls
with masking tape, and hand-finished where
the shapes overlap. I completed the look with
natural materials in sandy tones, such as
rattan rugs and lighting, linen curtains and a
lovely bamboo screen.’
Réli also got the paintbrushes and tape out
to add an easy geometric mural in the box
room, using up leftover paint samples. ‘When
our friends come to stay it is always useful to
have a spare single bed for their kids to sleep
in,’ he says. ‘This room is multifunctional, as BOX ROOM

Elegant new-build

‘Just a few simple DIYs have

made this house a home’
While Rosie and Paul Coulton never expected to buy a new-build, they’ve injected
character into theirs in spades, using panelling, paint tricks and eye-catching accessories

‘W
e’d lived in our previous house
for 29 years, and after exhausting
all the renovation possibilities
we were ready for a new project,’ says Rosie
Coulton. When she and husband Paul started
their search for a new home, however, they
could never have guessed they’d end up
buying a new-build. ‘Our previous house was
built in the 1950s and we fully expected to
buy another period property, but after a visit
to my nephew, we realised that his home
didn’t fit our perception of a new-build,’
says Rosie. ‘We were struck by the high
ceilings, big windows and even the detail of
the skirting boards, so we decided to bite the
bullet and buy a house on the same estate.’

STARTING AFRESH
Usually, the bonus of buying a new-build
is choosing the fixtures and fittings, but
unfortunately for Rosie and Paul the flooring,
kitchen and bathroom had already been
chosen by previous buyers who had pulled
out. ‘It was frustrating, as their choices
weren’t to my taste,’ says Rosie, ‘but as a
seasoned renovator, I knew I could still make
it my own.’ However, on the day the couple
were meant to move in, everything ground to
a halt as the first lockdown was announced.

‘We’d sold most of our furniture to the
woman who bought our last home, so even
when the removal company did arrive with
our belongings, we didn’t even have a dining
table to sit at,’ Rosie explains. ‘We were using
our garden furniture as a temporary measure!’
The house was very much a plain, white
box at first, and it was difficult to buy paint
because all the shops were closed, but this
ended up working in Rosie’s favour, as she

because it’s a north-facing kitchen, but
they are a timeless Shaker style,’ says
Rosie, ‘so rather than replacing them, we’ll
eventually have them sprayed a warm beige
and change the worktops to oak’
Rosie decided the easiest way to personalise
this space was to concentrate on the dining
area, and panelled the back wall herself. A
shelf and pegs add interest and, as Rosie says,
‘give me opportunities to faff and style’

back. ‘Buying a new-build meant we had to
shift our expectations about how to decorate
our home,’ she says. ‘We needed to change
the grey carpets, which weren’t practical with
dogs. I also wanted continuity, so we chose
light oak laminate to flow throughout the
whole downstairs, starting in the hallway,
through the kitchen and into the living room
and snug. We also installed shutters – a quick
and easy way to add character – and then I
began adding the personal touches.’
GLOW-UP GOALS
Rosie had chosen a grey colour palette in her
last home, but wanted to try something cosier
in this house. ‘I decided on a warm, neutral
scheme, using creams and greige tones to give
it a relaxed feel,’ says Rosie. Starting in the
main bedroom, Rosie added simple panelling
behind the bed and painted the walls in
Farrow & Ball’s Drop Cloth. ‘We found
the panelling easy to install, so got more
ambitious in the living room,’ she says. ‘It’s
an awkward room – long and narrow, with
no fireplaces to break up the look – so the
panelling was an easy device to add interest.’
The existing bathroom was basic, but too
good to strip out, so Rosie gave it a glow-up

entrance hall is the first thing people see,
so I wanted it to be beautiful’ says Rosie.
‘It was the first project I tackled on my own

‘I decided on a warm, neutral scheme for

by replacing the pedestal sink with a vanity
unit, and updating the floor with patterned
tiles. ‘As the changes progressed, I got a little
bit braver and decided to give colour-blocking
a go in the guest bedroom,’ says Rosie. ‘I
didn’t watch any tutorials, though, so it wasn’t
a great finish.’ Rather than re-doing it, Rosie
came up with the idea of running a piece of
gold washi tape along the wall to cover the
uneven paint line, adding another level of
unique detail.
A HAPPY OUTCOME
The only update in the kitchen was spraying
the silver handles black, while in the dining
area Rosie added personality with panelling.
‘We chose a style that incorporates pegs and a
shelf, giving me lots of styling opportunities,’
she says. The garden was the final challenge
as it was originally characterless, with 95
per cent grass and a few orange slabs. ‘Our
vision was to zone it, so we gave a sketch to
our builder, who put the decking areas down.

DIRECTIONS
■ Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/

■ Put the dry orzo into a large, ovenproof
dish. Chop the shallots into slices and add
to the dish with the garlic. Next, add some
roughly torn dill, the juice of ¼ lemon, the
dried mint and capers.
■ Pour the stock over the dry orzo and stir.

It will seem like there is a lot of liquid, but it
will absorb when cooked.
■ Season with salt and pepper and place on
the middle shelf of the oven for 25 minutes.
Check and stir gently after 10-15 minutes.
■ After 25 minutes, or when the liquid is thick
and mostly absorbed, take the dish out of the
oven and crumble the feta over the top. Add
the cherry tomatoes on their vines, pressing
gently into the orzo.
■ Put the dish back in the oven for a further
15 minutes, until the top is crisp and the feta
and tomatoes have blistered and softened.
■ Garnish with more fresh dill and drizzle
generously with olive oil.

✔ 4 tbsp olive oil ✔ 3 onions, peeled and chopped ✔ 4 cloves

DIRECTIONS
■ Add the olive oil to a hot paella pan (or any wide, shallow
pan). Once the oil is sizzling, add the onions and garlic and cook
for 5 minutes. Add the garlic granules, paprika, saffron, salt and
pepper and leave for 1 minute.
■ Add the rice and stir in until all the oil and seasoning has been

onions and garlic and cook over a medium heat until soft and the onions are
just starting to brown. Sprinkle in the turmeric, cumin and chilli flakes and
continue to fry for another minute.
■ Next, add the ginger, cinnamon and chickpeas, and keep frying for
another minute to really develop the flavours.

✔ 2 courgettes, cut into 5mm slices ✔ 1 aubergine, cut 35 minutes

■ Lay the courgette and aubergine slices out on a couple
of large baking sheets and brush them on both sides with
2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season, roast in the preheated
oven for 10 minutes until starting to soften, then leave to

cool for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, pat the tomato slices dry

and leave to drain on paper towels.
■ Put a large baking sheet on the top shelf of the oven

to heat up. Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a floured work

surface and roll out further in one direction to make a
square about 3mm thick, then trim off the corners to
make a 30cm round disc. Transfer the pastry circle to a
large piece of non-stick baking paper so that it’s easier
to move once it’s assembled.
■ Spread the mascarpone over the centre of the pastry,
leaving a 5cm border all around the edge, and season
with salt and pepper. Arrange the slices of courgette,
aubergine, tomato, red peppers and mozzarella on top
of the mascarpone in a spiral or concentric circles.
■ Drizzle with another tbsp of oil and fold in the sides to
overlap the filling slightly, making a 3-4cm crust. Brush
the crust with beaten egg, sprinkle with a little salt and
slide the tart, on its paper, onto the hot baking sheet in
the oven.
■ Bake for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is puffed and
golden and the vegetables have softened. Leave to rest
for at least 20 minutes.
■ Serve warm or at room temperature, scattered with
basil and drizzled with more oil.

Orange tart
YOU WILL NEED
For the sweet shortcrust pastry ✔ 150g plain flour, plus extra for
dusting ✔ 50g icing sugar ✔ 75g butter, chilled and diced ✔ 1 egg
yolk ✔ 1 tbsp iced water For the blood orange curd ✔ 3 large
eggs ✔ 150g caster sugar ✔ grated zest of ½ blood orange, plus
100ml juice ✔ 1 tbsp lemon juice ✔ 110g butter, softened and diced
✔ 1 blood orange for garnish (sliced into thin discs)
DIRECTIONS
■ Combine the flour, sugar and butter in a bowl and rub together
with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs or
rough sand. Add the egg yolk and water to form a dough.
■ Shape into a ball, then flatten into a disc. Cover in plastic wrap and
chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
■ While the pastry is chilling, make the curd. Put the eggs, sugar,
zest and juices in a medium heatproof bowl and whisk together.
■ Set the bowl above a saucepan of simmering water set over a
low-medium heat. Cook, stirring often with a wooden spoon, for
15-20 minutes, or until the mixture thickens to a curd. It is ready
when you are able to draw a line through the curd and it doesn’t run.
Stir in the butter until well blended and remove from the heat.
■ Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C Fan/Gas Mark 3 and butter a
24cm loose-based tart tin.
■ Roll the pastry out on a floured surface until large enough to cover
the tin. Line the tin with the pastry, pressing it into the sides. Trim the
excess by rolling the pin across the top of the tin. Line with baking
paper and fill with dried beans or rice (or weights) for blind baking.
■ Bake for 15 minutes, then lift out the paper and contents and
bake for 5 minutes more. Allow the pastry shell to cool for at least 5
minutes, then fill with the curd. Bake for another 10 minutes.
■ Leave the tart to cool, then chill in the refrigerator and serve cold.
■ For the blood orange garnish, slice the orange into
thin discs. Place them on a wire rack and cook them
in the oven for the last 5 minutes of the tart cooking.
Leave them to cool in the oven when you turn it off,
with the door slightly ajar.

YOU WILL NEED
✔ 175g caster sugar ✔ 2 large egg whites ✔ 600ml double cream
✔ seeds of 1 vanilla pod ✔ 200g super-ripe, bright-red strawberries
✔ 100g super-ripe raspberries ✔ 1 tbsp icing sugar ✔ 75g dark
chocolate, 75% cocoa solids ✔ neutral oil, for oiling ✔ 2lb loaf tin
DIRECTIONS
■ Lightly oil and line a loaf tin with cling film, leaving plenty of
film overhanging.
■ Put the caster sugar in a pan with 4 tbsp water, then gently heat
until completely dissolved. Turn up the heat and boil for 2 minutes.
■ As the sugar comes up to temperature, whisk the egg whites to
stiff peaks in a separate bowl. When the hot syrup is ready, carefully
pour it into the egg whites, a little at a time, with the beaters still
running, whisking until it has all been mixed in. Continue beating for
2 minutes until it has cooled. The mixture should be mousse-like.
■ In another bowl, softly whip the cream and vanilla seeds together.
Fold the cream into the egg whites in three batches to make the ice-
cream base. Divide the mixture between three separate bowls, making

■ Blend the berries and icing sugar in a food processor or blender,
then pass through a sieve. Fold the fruit base into the smaller batch
of ice-cream base and mix to a beautiful pink colour. Spoon it into the
lined tin and level the surface. Cover with a rectangle of baking paper
and freeze for 30 minutes.
■ Remove the paper and spoon over the plain vanilla layer, levelling
the surface. Cover and freeze as before.
■ Meanwhile, melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of
simmering water, then leave to cool. Fold the cooled chocolate
into the last remaining ice-cream base. Layer it in the tin, again
covering with paper, and place in the freezer for at least 3-4 hours
before serving.
■ Leave the semifreddo out of the freezer for 10
minutes to soften before serving, cut into slices.

it hard enough so that it crushes
and releases its moisture but not
so hard that it pulverises. Cut into
chunks, roughly 2-3cm thick.
■ Sprinkle with salt, then transfer
to a colander and place over a
bowl in the fridge for 10 minutes.

spices in a pan and bring slowly
to the boil, stirring constantly to
dissolve the sugar.
■ Add the well-drained
cucumber and onion mixture
and bring back to the boil for
1 minute. Transfer the mixture
to some sterilised jars, using a
slotted spoon.
■ Bring the liquid back to the boil
and simmer for about 15 minutes,
until slightly reduced, then divide
it between the jars, filling to the
brim. Put on the lids and label. The
pickle will keep for several months.

YOU WILL NEED
✔ 300g caster sugar ✔ 40g liquid
glucose ✔ ½ lemon, juiced ✔ 3
large cucumbers (600g in weight)
✔ 140ml gin
DIRECTIONS
■ Put the sugar and glucose in a
saucepan with 300ml of water.

■ Preheat the oven to 160°C/
140°C Fan/Gas Mark 3.
■ Warm the salmon for around 10
minutes in the oven. Meanwhile,
whisk all the dressing ingredients
together. Flake the salmon into
pieces and arrange on a large
serving platter with the leaves and
cucumber, then spoon over the
salad dressing.

Set the pan over a low heat until
the sugar has dissolved. Do not let
it boil. Remove from the heat and
add the lemon juice.
■ Juice the cucumbers. If you
have one, do this in a juicer. If not,
roughly chop them then whizz in
a blender to make a watery puree.
Line a sieve with muslin and set it
over a bowl, tip the puree into the
sieve and leave for a few minutes
so the juice drips through. Gather
the muslin into a bag and give it a
gentle squeeze to encourage any
last drops. Either process should ✁
result in around 500ml of juice.
■ Mix the sugary liquid and the
cucumber juice together in a bowl.
Add the gin and put it in the fridge
to chill. Once chilled, churn in an
ice-cream maker, then transfer to
the freezer to set completely.

In a room under the roof such
as a loft conversion, bedroom
or bathroom, skylights add so much natural
light. Before you buy, check the energy
performance rating and choose the best
option based on your climate and home’s
design. When it comes to size, energy.gov
recommends that a skylight should never
be more than 5 per cent of the floor area in
rooms with many windows, and no more
than 15 per cent of the room’s total floor
area for spaces with few windows. Think
carefully about its position: north-facing
roofs will be cooler; east-facing gives the
most light as well as solar heat gain in the
morning; west-facing gets afternoon sun;
and south-facing is the best all-round, but
can be hot, so look for solar-control glazing
or window-dressing solutions.

Increasing the height of
a single-storey room or
extension, roof lanterns are
the king of skylights with their eye-catching
architectural design. They flood the room
with light and really make a difference
during the darker winter months. They
are also extremely energy-efficient when
installed with heat-conserving glazing and,
as you won’t need to turn the lights on
so often, you should save money on both
heating and lighting. They don’t usually
need planning permission, so long as the
roof lantern doesn’t project more than
150mm from the existing roof plane, no
alteration is higher than the highest part of
the roof, and any side-facing windows are
to be obscure-glazed as well as 1.7m above
the floor. Anything bigger and you will
need to apply for planning.

Put extra energy into caring for plants and wildlife
throughout August, and your garden will reap the rewards

staying at home or venturing further
afield, August is often seen as the
idyllic month of drowsy bees and cocktails in
the garden. The reality, due to climate change,
is that August can be highly variable, with
monsoon rains one day and blistering heat the
next, so make your motto: ‘Be prepared’.
If you’re going away, move potted plants into
one or two areas according to light needs, but

Even if your lavenders are still in flower, August is the time to trim the growth
back to ensure it grows fresh leaves, which then have time to toughen up before
the first frosts. Be careful not to cut back too far, as it doesn’t regrow from
the older wood – just trim back below the flower stalks to create a green and
domed shape. You can use the stripped flower heads to fill bowls in the house
for scent, and tie any remaining flower stems into a bunch with twine; hang
them to dry, then use them in your wardrobe to fend off moths.
