2. ABSTRACT This writing is to analyze a short story entitled “The Boarding House” by James Joyce. The purpose of this study is to understand the use of symbols in the story. The
writer uses the instrinsic theory and close reading as its method. The writer finds that there are many symbols used in this short story. In conclusion, many symbols that are used
in this story makes the story has a deeper meaning than what it looks like. Keywords: symbol, short story, instrinsic.
3. I. INTRODUCTION I.1 Background of The Study Prose is one of the literary works which form can be novel or short stories, journalism, and academic writing. Prose is a
communicative style that has grammatical structure but sounds natural. Prose is the opposite of poem. The poem that already written in a prose usually is easier to understand
and more explicit to analyse. One of the instrinsic theory that isused in prose is symbols. In prose, using the symbols makes the story more intersting since the readers have to
find what are the hidden meaning behind all of those symbols. I.2 Purpose of The Study To understand the use of symbols in short story I.3 Scope of The Study The scope of this
study is to analyse symbols used in a short story entitled "The Boarding House" by James Joyce.
4. II. THE BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES JOYCE James Augustine Aloysius Joyce is born at 41 Brighton Square in Rathgar. He is one of the Ireland’s most influential and celebrated
writersin 20th century. He married with a galway woman, Nora Barnacle in 1904 and has two children, Giorgio and Lucia. In August 1904 the first of Joyce’s short stories was
published in the Irish Homestead magazine, followed by two others. 1914 proved a crucial year for Joyce. His first novel, began to appear in serial form in Harriet Weaver’s Egoist
magazine in London. It was in Paris that Joyce met Sylvia Beach, an American ex-pat who helped him to publish Ulysses for the first time in 1922. From 1930, a!er Beach had
relinquished the rights to Ulysses, Joyce became very close with Paul Léon, another ex-pat living in Paris. In 13th January 1941, James Joyce dies of a perforated duodenal ulcer.
He is buried in Fluntern cemetery, Zurich.
