1. General:

This document describes the Operation & Maintenance procedure for the AAL make Passenger
Information Display System installed for DMRC Phase-3 stations.

Three types of display boards have been installed on station categorised as below:
(I) 2-line double sided LED display boards for platform area at elevated station
(II) 3-line single sided LED display boards for concourse area at elevated/underground station
(III) 2 line double sided LED display boards for platform area at underground station

These display boards will display the information regarding train arrival, departure & other
messages to passengers on the stations according to data received from PAS/PIDS servers
located at TER/SCR of each station. LED technology has been employed for the design of display
boards, which provide good visibility under all weather conditions.

Page 4
2. System Overview:
The PIDS panels installed at the stations are connected to PAS/PIDS servers located at TER/SCR
of the stations in order to provide required functionalities. The PIDS panels are driven on IP
communication link for receiving train arrival information from station server, decode the
information and display on LED boards.

3. Description of PIDS panels:
3.1 Concourse Display Board:

The PIDS panels employ SMD type LEDs. The displays are driven via IP communication
interface from the PIDS/PAS computer. The LED display units used for display of visual
information regarding train arrival/train departure are 3-line single sided. Information is
displayed in both Hindi & English languages.

The display units are intelligent to cater changing ambient light conditions. A brightness
sensor is incorporated in the unit to sense the ambient light and convert the light signal to
appropriate voltage signal, which is fed to electronic circuit inside the display unit to control
the LED driving.

The units are designed around a powerful micro-controller, which takes input data stream
on the IP communication interface, decodes the information for designated line and
displays it accordingly (Refer to below Line Diagram of Concourse Display Unit).

These display units are operated with 230V, 50Hz ac supply.

4. Function of each sub-assembly of PIDS Panel:
PIDS board (3-line single sided concourse or 2-line double sided platform) is having
following electronic sub-assemblies:

• Main Control Unit (MCU) Board

• LED Display Board
• LDR card
• Power Supply Modules
• Communication Board

Functional description of each type of block/ PCB is explained as below:

(i) Main Control Unit (MCU) Board:

The MCU board is heart of the display unit, which receives data stream from station
server over serial interface, parses the received information and sends the
information to LED display board in appropriate format to make readable to
passengers.

The MCU board is designed around powerful DSP processor, supported by other
necessary peripherals like memory, transceivers, decoders, buffers/ latches for
proper functioning of the board.

Block diagram of the MCU board is illustrated as below:

Page 12
Page 13
(ii) LED Display Board:

The LED display board contains LEDs arranged in matrix of pre-defined rows &
columns. The control electronics mounted on the board is used to drive LEDs as
per programmed pattern.

(iii) LDR Card:

The function of LDR card is to sense ambient light conditions and provide signal to
MCU board. The MCU board adjusts brightness of LEDs mounted on LED display
board in accordance with ambient light conditions.

(iv) Power Supply Module:

Power supply module takes AC input and provides different low voltage DC
outputs, which feed power to MCU, board, LED display boards, Communication
board etc. Necessary surge protection circuitry is built in the power supply module.

(v) Communication Board:

The communication board receives data stream on serial bus, which is fed to MCU
board.

Page 14
5. Configuration of MCU board in PIDS panel:

MCU ID is configured for Individual MCU board placed inside the PIDS panel for each
display line. The MCU ID is assigned according to the PIDS panel type
(Platform/Concourse) and corresponding display line number. A binary equivalent value is
configured using 4 ways DIP-switch provided on the MCU board. The MCU IDs are given
in below table for different PIDS type and corresponding display line numbers.

6. Recommended Preventive Maintenance for PIDS Panels:
Periodic maintenance should be performed on PIDS panels in order to pre-empt the
occurrence of any type of fault in the equipment in future. Following steps are
recommended to be carried out during preventive maintenance:

6.1 Dusting & Cleaning:

Dusting and cleaning of PIDS panels should be done at least once in every quarter by
vacuum cleaner or any other suitable means. Front faces of display boards should be
wiped with soft cloth and appropriate cleaning liquid. Dust on the equipment may be
cleaned by suitable hair brushes.

6.2 Overhauling:

Overhauling of the PIDS panels should be done at least twice in one year. The objective of
overhauling should be to ensure bright & uniform glow of display boards. Proper glowing of
all LEDs shall be checked in all display boards to achieve the objective of overhauling. Any
defective item should be replaced, if not found in working order.

Page 16
7. Corrective Maintenance for PIDS Panels:
Corrective maintenance is performed to rectify the faults, if any, occurred during working of
the equipment. Please refer to fault symptom as stated in troubleshooting guide below at
point 8 and corrective action accordingly.
