CHAPTER 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
Chapter 1
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Joystick steering system allows the wheel loader to be operated using hand controls on the operator seat
armrest. It brings steering capabilities to the operator’s fingertips. Use joystick steering for short cycle,
repetitive, high-production load and carry operations to reduce operator fatigue and increase operating
efficiency.
This manual is an important supplement to the Operator’s Manual and has been written to supply you with all
the necessary information related to the safe use and operation of the Joystick Steering System (JSS).
The information related to general safety, run-in period, operation, and maintenance is available in the
operator’s manual suppled with this machine. Read both the operator’s manual and supplements carefully.
DO NOT use this machine for any application or purpose other than as described in the operator’s manual,
this supplement, decals or any other product safety information provided with the machine. These materials
define the machine’s intended use. If the loader is to be used in an application that involves special
attachments or equipment, such as forestry, etc., consult an authorized dealer. Consult an authorized dealer
on changes, additions or modifications that can be required for this machine to comply with various country
regulations and safety requirements.
Use in any other way is considered contrary to the machine’s intended use. The manufacturer accepts no
liability for any damage or injury resulting from unauthorized modifications and/or misuse of this machine and
attachments. These risks will be borne solely by the user.
This Operators Manual is to be stored in the manual compartment equipped on this machine. Make certain
this manual is complete and in good condition. Contact your dealer to obtain additional manuals or for any
further information or assistance about your machine.
Do not operate or permit anyone to operate or service this machine until you or the other persons have read
and understand the safety, operation, and maintenance instructions in this manual. Use only trained operators
who have demonstrated the ability to operate and service this machine correctly and safely.
Before permitting a new operator on this machine, make certain:
The operator has received the necessary training to operate the machine correctly and safely.
The operator has read and understands the instructions given in this manual and the Operator’s Manual.
The operator possesses a valid local vehicle permit and/or other applicable local age work permits.
Your dealer is at your disposal for any further information. Always give the machine name, model, and product
identification number (P.I.N) when contacting your dealer for parts or information.
NOTICE: The information in this manual is provided on the basis of information that was available at the time the
manual was written. Settings, procedures, part numbers, software and other items can change. These changes
can affect the service that is given to the machine. Ensure that you have complete and current information from
your dealer before you start any machine operation. All data given in this manual is subject to production variations.

SAFETY RULES
For all safety rules, refer to the Operator’s Manual supplied with this manual.
WARNING
This safety alert symbol indicates important safety messages in this manual. When you see this symbol, carefully
read the message that follows and be alert to the possibility of death or serious injury.
M171C
WARNING
Use caution when moving about in the operator’s compartment when joystick steering is active. An inadvertent
movement against the joystick steering control could cause the machine to turn or move abruptly. Failure to
comply could result in machine damage, death or serious injury.
M1347
WARNING
Do not use joystick steering when traveling on a public road or highway. The left arm rest must be raised and in a
locked position. Failure to comply could result in machine damage, death or serious injury.
M136
WARNING
If hydraulic pilots are disengaged, the joystick steering still remains active. Always disengage joystick steering
when not in use. Failure to comply could result in machine damage, death, or serious injury.
M1348
WARNING
Do not use joystick steering when loading or unloading the machine from a truck or trailer. Always use the primary
steering when loading or unloading the machine from transport. Failure to comply could result in machine damage,
death, or serious injury.
M1345
WARNING
Be cautious when turning with joystick steering. Abrupt movements of the joystick control to the left or right could
cause the machine to turn more sharply than acceptable. Take necessary precautions. Do not use the joystick for
primary steering. It is intended for short repetitive operations. Failure to comply could result in machine damage,
death, or serious injury.
M1336
WARNING
Do not use joy stick steering if operating at speeds over 20 km/h (12.4 mph). Always use the primary steering
wheel at higher speeds for optimum control of the machine. Failure to comply could result in machine damage,
death or serious injury.
M1349
WARNING
Check all controls and safety devices in a safe, open area before starting work. Failure to comply could result in
machine damage, death or serious injury.

DECALS
WARNING
Make sure that the decals are perfectly legible, clean them regularly and replace decals that are destroyed, lost,
painted over or no longer legible with new ones. When parts bearing decals are replaced, be sure to put new
decals on each new part. Failure to comply can result in machine damage, injury, or death.
CE-NA000
NOTICE: When you clean the decals, use only a cloth, water and soap. Do not use solvents, gasoline, etc.
This chapter only covers decals relating to safety and machine operation and servicing. For information on all
decals for the machine, consult your authorized dealer.
