Teacher’s Notes for Quiz 2:

Food

Objectives: A  To learn about international foods

B To develop students’ understanding of the international origins of
various foods
Dictionary skills: Finding definitions of unknown words in the dictionary or on the DVD-ROM
Tasks: A Match foods and their descriptions
B Match foods and their countries of origin

Procedure

Students can work alone or in pairs. Go over the pronunciation of the foods with the class. Introduce
both parts of the quiz before students begin so that when they look up the definition of a food (for Part
A), they can also note where it comes from (for Part B).

Ask students to work in pairs when they have completed the activity to ask each other if they have
eaten any of these foods. If so, what did it taste like? (This activity focuses on the present perfect and
simple past tenses: Have you ever eaten tempura? Yes, I had it when I visited Tokyo last year.).

Answers: 1 c, Italy

2 e, Greece

3 d, Latin America

4 h, India

5 a, North Africa

6 b, Hungary

7 l, Korea

8 j, Spain

9 g, France

10 i, Southeast Asia

11 f, Germany or Austria

12 k, Japan

Another possible follow-up activity would be to ask students to give the adjective for each country;
e.g. Antipasto is a type of Italian food.
