Undermining the Purpose: Student Government

is a means to an end and not of opportunity to

serve

Marcos alike? I hope not. For those who have served with Genuity – I implore that
they will be of service again. For those who are new – I pray that they will be committed
and genuine.

As the surface appears appealing, there's always something shady underneath.

There is a conflict of interest. They may have adapted the ill-perceived definition of
politics. Are they committed and genuine? Or are they only after their egoistic interest?

Why is the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. relevant in this topic? Well, he's
an example of a wolf in sheep's clothing.

He successfully took over the helm of our country for 21 years and enriched his
family with our wealth. How did he do it? As a well-spoken man, he wooed the citizens
with his charisma and intellect and hammered down absolute fear in the electorates. What
did we get in return? We had a crippling economy with a 59 percent poverty rating when
the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution overthrew him.

The point being is he betrayed the people who voted for him. Instead of a "New
Society" that he promised, we were left with a "Crippling Society"—a man not of his word.

As the number of candidates fluctuated in this year's SSG and College elections,
may the former dictator serve as a reminder for them. To be true to their words and not
just pursue their interest.

Student government allows college students to participate in leadership,

community building, and decision-making. However, in some cases, those who see it as
a means to an end rather than an opportunity to serve can undermine its purpose.

Unfortunately, some students may use their involvement in student government for
personal gain. It could be as simple as using student government to improve their resume.
In extreme cases, they seek power over others to enrich themselves.

Student government loses its value and purpose when it becomes a means to an
end. Such can lead to a breakdown in the student body's confidence and trust in the
student leaders.

May they avoid the practice of ill-defined politics once they assume office.
