Cancelling your Direct Debit:

tax ran out (expired).
• You can cancel your single payment Direct Debit once we have taken the scheduled payment.
• If you cancel your monthly Direct Debit before we take a scheduled payment, your vehicle will not be taxed from the end of the
month that we took the last successful payment.
If you tell us you have sold, scrapped, exported or made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), we will cancel your Direct
Debit.

When it is time to renew your vehicle tax:


• Your vehicle tax should renew automatically and we will send a new payment schedule.
• You do not need to wait for us to take the first payment before you use the vehicle on the road.
If you do not pay the agreed Direct Debit, you may get a late licensing penalty and enforcement action taken against you.

The Direct Debit Guarantee


• This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
• If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit DVLA will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited
or as otherwise agreed. If you request DVLA to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
• If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by DVLA or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount
paid from your bank or building society

Direct Debit - what happens next?

What happens after you have set up You'll get confirmation by email (if you have provided an email address) or by post.
or renewed your Direct Debit? DVLA will take payments on the first working day of every month except for the first
payment, which can vary. The first payment will not be taken before your vehicle tax
starts.
You do not have to wait for DVLA to take the first payment before you can use your
vehicle on the road. If you're taxing in advance, you can use the vehicle from the date
the vehicle tax starts.

Cancelling your Direct Debit? Your Direct Debit is automatically cancelled if you tell DVLA that your vehicle has
been:
• sold or transferred
• scrapped at an authorised treatment facility
• exported
• taken off the road and you've made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
• given an exempt duty tax class
You'll automatically get a refund within 4-6 weeks for any full months of vehicle tax
that you have paid for but have not used.
If you tell DVLA late in the month and we cannot stop your next payment from being
taken from the bank or building society, it will refund automatically to the account
within 10 working days.

How to change your bank details on You can contact your bank/building society to change bank details. Contact DVLA if
your Direct Debit? they are unable to help you, or for advice on changing any personal details e.g. name/
address.

What happens if there is not enough DVLA will try to collect the Direct Debit again within 4 working days of the payment

If after the second attempt there still is not enough money to cover the payment, we'll

late licensing penalty. If you continue to fail paying for your vehicle licence (tax), you
may also be subject to enforcement action.
Please note: you must tell DVLA if you take your vehicle off the road. You can declare
SORN on gov.uk/make-a-sorn
