Payment Schedule
If the above instalment details are incorrect please call us on 0300 790 6802. We are open 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on
Saturday. Otherwise, no further action is required and we’ll process your Direct Debit as normal. It is your responsibility to ensure that payments are
taken as scheduled above.
Your Direct Debit should automatically renew when the vehicle tax is
due. Further information will be sent to you with your payment schedule.
What happens after you’ve set up / You’ll get confirmation by email (if you have provided an email address) or by post.
renewed your Direct Debit? DVLA will take payments on the first working day of every month except for the first
payment which can vary. The first payment won’t be taken before your vehicle tax
starts.
You don’t have to wait for DVLA to take the first payment before you can use your
vehicle on the road. If you’re taxing in advance, you can use the vehicle from the date
the vehicle tax starts.
Cancelling your Direct Debit? Your Direct Debit is automatically cancelled if you tell DVLA that your vehicle has
been:
• sold or transferred
• scrapped at an authorised treatment facility
• exported
• taken off the road and you’ve made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
• given an exempt duty tax class
You’ll automatically get a refund within 4-6 weeks for any full months of vehicle tax
that you’ve paid for but haven’t used.
If you tell DVLA late in the month and we can’t stop your next payment from being
taken from the bank or building society, it will refund automatically to the account
within 10 working days.
How to change your bank details on You can contact your bank/building society to change bank details. Contact DVLA if
your Direct Debit? they are unable to help you, or for advice on changing any personal details e.g. name/
address.
What happens if there isn’t enough DVLA will try to collect the Direct Debit again within 4 working days of the payment
money in my account? date.
If after the second attempt there still isn’t enough money to cover the payment, we’ll
cancel your Direct Debit and tell you we have done this. You’ll have to renew your
vehicle tax using your vehicle registration certificate (V5C) immediately.
Failure to pay your Direct Debit payments means that you may become subject to a
late licensing penalty. If you continue to fail paying for your vehicle licence (tax) you
may also be subject to enforcement action.
Please note: if you take your vehicle off the road you must tell DVLA about this. You
can declare SORN on gov.uk/make-a-sorn
What happens when my vehicle tax Your Direct Debit should renew automatically. You must have a valid MOT (and

If you fail to receive this by the date your vehicle tax expires please contact us. We
will be unable to automatically renew a Direct Debit if we do not hold any keeper
details on the vehicle record at the point of renewal.
Can I transfer my Direct Debit to my You’ll need to set up a new Direct Debit for the new vehicle. The Direct Debit for your

or not adhering to the terms of the DD guarantee.
