Basic Scenario Generator

I sat wondering one day, how would I go about creating a scenario generator for our Rangers of
Shadow Deep game, and why would I even attempt it? Sometimes it’s fun to go trapsing through
strange adventures with no real goal in mind. Some of us may not have all of the official
supplements and are starving for new missions. Still other times, we might want to help beef up
our rangers and companions with experience or progression points. More magic items? More
herbs? More action? It is for all these reasons that I created this. Please enjoy!

SET-UP
Set-up comes first and the location of our new scenario must be determined. Simply roll a d20
and consult the table. Of course, if the result is not to your liking, you can always re-roll until you
are satisfied or simply select one yourself.
LOCATION
1-2 Along a Road 11-12 Village
3-4 Farm 13-14 Graveyard
5-6 Forest 15-16 Ruined Tower
7-8 Swamp 17-18 Temple
9-10 River 19-20 Dungeon

PRIMARY THREAT
A Primary Threat is a creature or monster that will be see the most often during a randomly
generated scenario. They will be a weaker form of adversary though they will be very dangerous
in large numbers. Roll a d20 and consult the table below to determine what the Primary Threat
will be for this scenario.
1-2 Zombies 11-12 Giant Flies
3-4 Giant Spiders 13-14 Cultists
5-6 Wolves 15-16 Ghouls
7-8 Goblins/Orcs 17-18 Gnolls
9-10 Giant Rats 19-20 Zombies & Giant Rats

SECONDARY THREAT
A Secondary Threat is a creature or monster that will definitely be encountered but not as
frequently as the Primary Threat. This threat will most likely be stronger or more dangerous in
smaller numbers. Roll a d20 and consult the table below to determine what the Secondary Threat
will be for this scenario.
1-3 Zombies 13-15 Ghouls
4-6 Giant Spiders 16-18 Ogre
7-9 Wolves 19-20 Troll
10-12 Giant Rats

TERTIARY THREAT
A Tertiary Threat is the strongest creature or monster
in the scenario and will most likely be the objective for
the mission, though not always. This is the threat that
will hurt Alladore’s cause the most. Roll a d20 and
consult the table below to determine what the
Tertiary Threat for this scenario will be.
1-4 Darkroot
5-8 Flesh Golem
9-12 Shadow Knight

PLACING CLUE MARKERS, THREATS, AND RANGERS RANDOMLY

CLUE MARKERS
Using the grid map below, roll a d20 to find a grid square A, B, C, or D.
Next, roll a d20 to find a grid square E, F, G, or H within the first grid square found (i.e., grid BH).
Place a clue marker in the center of this grid block, then repeat this process until four clue
markers are placed. Place a final clue marker at the very center of the board.

STARTING THREATS
Place one primary threat in each outside corner of the board.
Roll a d20 to find a grid square A, B, C, or D. Place a secondary threat in the center of this grid
square.

RANGER STARTING POINT

To find your ranger’s starting point, roll a d20 twice to find two different grid squares A, B, C, or
D. Find the connecting point for these two grid squares and deploy your ranger and their
companions at this point. It is possible for this point to be the center of the board.

If the event cards for Lightning Storm, Vulture, Sunlight, Driving Rain, or Swarming Locusts are
drawn during a “dungeon” scenario, ignore this result, and draw again.

A SAMPLE GAME ROLLED USING THIS GUIDE

The location for this scenario is an abandoned farm. The trees and grasses have become tall and
unkept. A small farmhouse is located at the center of the table. It seems a fallen Ranger has
recruited a clan of goblins to create chaos throughout the country as the Shadow Deep gobbles
more and more territory. A few ogres might also have been employed by this dark traitor. Our
mission is to infiltrate this farm and dispatch the fallen Ranger before he can cause more trouble
for the kingdom. Any items you find along the way are yours and your groups to keep. FOR
ALLADORE!!!

The clues we found were a treasure token, a new primary threat, the mutilated remains of a
civilian, a sack of herbs, and a spiked pit trap.

We had 8 events. Most of them were adding more threats to the table but we did encounter the
sinister fog, the Vulture (that we failed to destroy), and the driving rain.

This was a tough but fun little scenario. Hopefully you all have a little fun with my new random
scenario generator. Cheers!
