    Sept. 23: Deadline to challenge signatures on nominating petitions for Olivia Cortes and Jerry Lewis. Sept. 29: Last day to file as write-in candidate. Oct. 11: Voter registration closes. Oct. 13: Early voting begins. Nov. 8: Election Day. Dec. 5: Official canvass of results. The candidate with the most votes will represent District 18 as state senator in the next legislative session, even if no candidate gets a majority of the votes.

    Promise Arizona, a group that cut its political teeth in the battle over Senate Bill 1070, is wading into the District 18 recall election with a drive to register Hispanic voters. The group, headquartered in Phoenix, will sponsor a daylong "movement-building training session" Saturday at El Paraizo Salon de Evento, 933 E. Main St., Mesa. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and training is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Promise Arizona conducted a 103-day vigil in 2010 in opposition to SB1070, which was sponsored by Senate President Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, who is the target of the recall. Billed at the time as the toughest state immigration law in the country, key provisions of the measure are now on hold pending court review. Since 2010, it has broadened its approach from focusing on immigration policy to seeking to elect leaders friendly to its viewpoints, conducting voter registration drives with that aim in mind.
