Diode Characteristic Review
• Electrical Characteristics of Diode

o The most common and important application of a

diode is in rectifier.

Principle of Rectifier Nguyen tac chinh luu

• Rectifier – electrical deivice that converts alternating

current (AC), which periodically reverses direction to
direct current (DC)
• Two types of rectifier:
o Half Wave Rectifier Chinh luu nua song

o Full Wave Rectifier Chinh luu ca song

Half-wave rectifier
• Half-wave rectifier
o Only uses one diode for transformation

o Allows only one-half cycle of an AC voltage

waveform to pass while blocking the other half
cycle

• 𝑉𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉𝑖𝑛 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑉𝑖𝑛 > 0𝑉

Full-wave rectifier
• Center Tapped Full-wave rectifier using 2 diodes tai cuon thu
cap cua may bien ap

o Uses two diodes connected to the secondary of a

center-tapped transformer

Full-wave rectifier
• Center Tapped Full-wave rectifier Peak Inverse
Voltage (PIV)

Full-wave rectifier
• Diode Bridge Rectifier
o There are only two diodes conducting current
during each half of the cycle. The other two are
reverse biased

Full-wave rectifier
• Diode Bridge Rectifier PIV
o Ideal Diode: 𝑉𝑃 𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 𝑉𝑝 𝑠𝑒𝑐

o Peak Inverse Voltage: PIV= 𝑉𝑃 (𝑜𝑢𝑡)

Full-wave rectifier
• Diode Bridge Rectifier PIV
o For Non-Ideal Diode

o Peak Inverse Voltage: PIV= 𝑉𝑃 𝑜𝑢𝑡 + 0.7

Voltage limiting using diode
• Limiting the positive alternation

Voltage limiting using diode
• Limiting the negative alternation

Voltage limiting using diode
• Limiting voltage with correction

14/10/2022 Analog Design – Le Minh Thuy 16

Voltage multiplier using diode
oConsider that every diode is ideal:

VC1 − VC 2 + V p = 0
VC 2 = VC1 + V p
VC 2 = V p + V p = 2V p

Practice Excercises
Ex1: The following figure shows a zener diode regulator
designed to hold 10 V at the output. Assume the zener
impedance is zero and the zener current ranges from 4
mA minimum (IZK) to 40 mA maximum (IZM). What are
the minimum and maximum input voltages for these
currents?

Practice Excercises
Ex4: In the circuit shown below, V1 is a 50-Hz AC voltage
source. D1 has VD.on = 0.7 V. D2 has zener voltage of 5.6 V.
R1 = 1kΩ, R2 = 4kΩ. Please calculate and plot the current
vs. time of the current through R2 in 2 cases:
