Nuts & Bolts to the roaring Aviation rebound

& sustainability
2nd September, 2022

Brief:

Aviation industry has absorbed the worst shock of COVID-19. After the first quarter of
2020, thousands of airline workers with rich experiences were laid-off. For some
airlines the capacity cut was 40-70%. With no predictable silver-lining seen in the
sector at that time, the training schools were suspended or halted further intake, which
compromised the sustainability factor.

Now, the growth of aviation industry has started to rebound at an amazing

momentum. But, the insufficiency of skillful, talented, vetted mechanics/engineers
could prolong flight disruptions or full aviation come-back to maximum growth.
America & Europe is already facing this kick in the teeth, while Asia is next to
experience it now; with massive growth predicted in the sector.

This scenario will be having a lasting effect on the decade to follow. It is said, that
sustainability consists of addressing the needs of current generations without
compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between
economic viability & progression, environmental care and social well-being. To keep
the airline soaring with sustainable growth, we need to address the key issue of skillful
manpower. World has currently, more than 25,000 commercial aircraft. A growth is
expected to a new high 35,000 total aircraft in operation by 2027.

In addition, to the post pandemic shortage of AMTs, situation is fast approaching which
will further sweat out the airline executives with factors including:

- retirements
- remuneration competition with other industry sectors for skilled personnel
- Accredited training capacity being insufficient to meet demands

- learning methodologies not abreast to evolving learning style
- accessibility to affordable training
- Classical approach to MRO infrastructure, documentation & management
- Little awareness in younger generation for this demand

Solutions

Short Term

• training facilities lifted to levels required by national and international

airworthiness authorities
• awareness plus better & conducive working environments
• setting up of a new school/MTOs and the associated documentation & facilities
• short conversion courses for support staff of different fields of engineering/
diploma to aviation/AMT
• Contracting states to accept qualifications from other countries for a buffer
period, thus globally-harmonized human resource tool.
• Outsourcing & Contracted Maintenance hybrid programs
• Management orientation for better connectivity and improved resource
management
• Innovative virtual and interactive training tools

Long Term

• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) pave a pathway into the
future of MRO Industries around the globe
• Utilization of IoT
• Ditalization of MRO resources; targeting to resource, cost, time, and quality
optimization

❖ policy brief for the Long Term solutions will be delivered
