In December 2018, the millionth Iskraemeco
smart meter was delivered to four utilities in-
volved in the SMR5 project. The project is even
more interesting because it is based on applying
a sustainability approach to metering.
One of the crucial elements within the SMR5
project was the implementation of the fair
smart meter concept. The utilities wanted to
assure their customers that the installed smart
meters were fair in all aspects. For this purpose,
Iskraemeco adopted a thorough, long-term
sustainability strategy. The Fair Meter initiative,
which was initiated within the project, incorpo-
rates sustainable and circular economy practices
in the production of fair smart meters and pays
great attention to materials, their origin, labour
standards, and developing higher standards in
the industry.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), one

of the leading energy companies in the UAE when
it comes to technology advances, is following its
ambitious targets for implementing a Smart grid.
With smart meter installations DEWA strives to
accomplish its entrenched philosophy – to meet the
growing demands of its customers.

The integration and installation of Iskraemeco smart

meters with RF communication is a major stepping
stone in the utilities` plan for implementing advanced
smart metering technologies, by supplying 20,000
smart meters Iskraemeco supports DEWA’s plan to
replace the entire population of electricity meters in
the Emirate by 2020. Smart metering implementation
follows DEWA`s strategic goals of conserving the
environment and natural resources by rationalizing
consumption, ensuring the implementation of demand
side management strategy in order to improve the
efficiency of electricity and water consumption.
Important aspects in the project are network optimiza-
tion, greater sustainability across Dubai and end-us-
er involvement. DEWA has long ago embraced the
awareness that a smart grid has become a “must have”
for maintaining prosperous customer relationships.
Information about everyday energy consumption will
enable consumers to make rational decisions when it
comes to energy conservation activities.

(STA)

On the one hand, instruction in voca-

tional schools will be organized accord-
ing to learning fields and not according
to school subjects anymore. This means
that the students are no longer taught
according to subjects (e.g. technical
mathematics, technical drawing etc.),
independent of a concrete application
situation in the company environment,
but according to learning fields (e.g.
Learning field 1: “Analyze electro techni-
cal systems and check functions”) which
are based on real business fields in the
company.

The competences to be acquired now are always combined

with a concrete application in the working environment.
By this constant application orientation, the education be-
comes on the one hand more motivating for the students.
On the other hand, the companies profit from the com-
prehensive and practical expertise of the students. In the
end, at least 50% of the training content will correspond
to that in Germany.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Cooperation with the German-Arab

Chamber of Industry & Commerce,
Cairo (GACIC/AHK)
The second innovation of this project is the cooperation with
the German-Arab Chamber of Industry & Commerce, Cairo
(GACIC/AHK).
According to the regulations of the dual system in Germa-
ny there is a shared responsibility between the Ministry of
Education (responsible for the training in schools) and the
Chamber of Industry & Commerce (responsible for the train-
ing in companies). The project aims to support this cooper-
ation which is new to Egypt and contribute to improving the
quality of technical and vocational training.

80 | Elsewedy Electric Magazine

Gender Mainstreaming
The third point which the EBRD very much emphasiz-
es is to promote and enhance gender main-streaming.
In our concrete case this means that the community
will be informed about the technical training for girls
at the STA and therefore more girls will start a 3-years
training programme. STA already started with the
inclusion of girls in 2017. Currently there are 38 girls
in different programmes enrolled, which corresponds
to 5.3 % of all students. Despite the seemingly small
number, this is already remarkable for technical train-
ings in Egypt.
The project began in December 2018 and is scheduled
to run for two years. We are very confident that we
will achieve hereby a higher level of quality in tech-
nical and vocational training at Elsewedy Technical
Academy (STA).

“Employer Branding”…The Journey
The journey started at the end of 2018, where we focused on the cur-
rent internal employees who grew within Elsewedy Electric; ensuring
their career aspirations have been met. This has been demonstrated
through availing internal vacancies and prioritizing our employees over
external hires. Additionally, we have launched the “Grow” program in
February 2019 to further nurture our talents.
On the other side, external talents’ pool has expanded through a
wide array of talent acquisition activities such as launching the first
“Elsewedy Electric summer training program” across 30 Universities.
In addition, the “Fresh Graduate program” has been launched in three
of Elsewedy Electric subsidiaries, and is planned to cover the rest of
subsidiaries in 2019.
To support our growth initiatives in 2019 onwards, the talent acquisi-
tion team is extensively in search for the best calibers to support new
