Stockholms Banco, Sweden’s first bank, issued the first real banknotes in Europe in 1661. The bank
was founded by Johan Palmstruch, who issued the banknotes as deposit certificates.
Because they were lighter and more convenient to carry than coins made of copper, Palmstruch’s
banknotes quickly became popular. What was special about the credit notes, as they were called, were
handed out as loans from the bank. These credit notes could be used to purchase anything. And this was
how the first banknotes in Europe were invented.
Palmstruch’s banknotes were not linked to any deposit. They were based on the general public’s
confidence that the bank would pay the value printed on the banknotes in coins upon demand.
The bank printed more and more notes leading to what today is known as inflation. Many people
demanded their notes be redeemed, but the bank didn’t have enough coins for everyone. Stockholms
Banco then demanded that the loans it had granted had to be repaid. This led to a bank failure as well as
many people suffering financial problems.
Johan Palmstruch was sentenced to death for mismanagement of the bank in 1668. He was reprieved
but remained in prison until 1670. He died a year later.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
Calcium is the most important mineral bones, but it needs vitamin D to be absorbed by the body and
incorporated into the bone. While all experts agree that the combination of these two micronutrients is
essential for strong bones, the optimal nutrient dose is debated. In many countries, dietary reference
intakes are being considered for revision because of recent evidence that current recommendations are
too low. Recently in the US, vitamin D intake recommendations were raised to 600 IU daily for 1 to 70
years of age and 800 IU after the age of 71. Many experts suggest, however, that it takes a daily dose of at
least 800 IU – two times higher than current EU recommendations – to bring vitamin D levels into an
effective range. Some research indicates that 1,000-2,000 IU daily may be the optimum dose for bone
health.
Bone fractures are not just due to brittle bones but also to falling. By minimizing the risk of falling,
the fracture risk is reduced. Research indicates that vitamin D can help prevent fall-related fractures via
its positive effect on muscle function and strength, which reduces loss of balance or swaying. Vitamin D
plays a role in initiating protein synthesis in muscle fibers responsible for speed and strength – precisely
those which help prevent a fall. Muscle examined from people with vitamin D deficiency shows a
breakdown in these fibers which can be reversed within a few weeks by increasing the amount of vitamin
D in the body to sufficient levels. Furthermore, vitamin D helps maintain calcium levels in the blood,
which is necessary for the normal functioning of muscles. Therefore vitamin D has a double impact on
the prevention of osteoporotic fractures when the levels in the body are adequate: it strengthens bone and
muscle at the same time, preventing osteoporosis, muscle weakness and fractures.

B. Vitamin D intake recommendations in the US have been raised to 600-700 IU.
C. Vitamin D has no positive effect on muscle function and strength.
D. The normal functioning of muscles depends on calcium levels in the blood.
Question 50: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Vitamin D and calcium are essential for healthy bone.

C. Vitamin D intake recommendations after the age of 71 are unidentified.
