Multiplying Numbers with and without Regroupings
Multiplying Numbers without regroupings

• Multiply all the digits in the multiplicand from right to left by each digit in the multiplier.
• Add the products to get the final product.

Example 1: Using partial product method, what is the product of 304 x 21?

Step 1: Step 2: Step 3:

Multiplying with regroupings

• Multiply all the digits in the multiplicand from right to left by each digit in the multiplier
to get the first partial product.
• Regroup when necessary
• Then add the partial product.

Estimating the Product

To estimate the product, round the factors to the highest / greatest place value, then
multiply the rounded factors.

Example: Find the estimated product of 4 872 x 432.

Step 1: Identify first the highest place value.

Highest place value in

multiplicand 4 872
Highest place value in
multiplier x 432

Step 2: Round the factors to the highest place value.

4 872 5 000

Solving Routine and Non-routine Problems Involving Multiplication
To solve routine problems involving multiplication of whole numbers including money using
appropriate strategies and tools, follow these steps:

Understand
• Know what is asked
• Know the given facts
• If any, determine the hidden question
Plan
• Determine the operations to be used
• Write the number sentence
Solve
• Use the operation to solve
Check and Look Back
• Write the correct answer

Non-routine problems can be solved without using standard procedure. They can be solve
by drawing a picture, using a number line, acting out, making a table, and others.

Example:
A popular Pinoy Band has scheduled 23 cities for the upcoming tour. Their goal is to sell
330 tickets for each show. How many tickets in all need to be sold for them to meet that goal?

Understand:
What is asked?
Number of tickets in all need to be sold for them to meet that goal.
Given Facts
23 cities scheduled for upcoming tour and 330 tickets to for each show
Plan:
Operation to be used?
Multiplication
Number Sentence
330 x 23 = n
Solve:
330 x 23 = 7 590
Check and Look Back:
7 590 number of tickets in all need to be sold for them to meet that goal.

Solving Multistep Problems Involving Multiplication and Addition or
Subtraction
To solve multistep routine and nonroutine problems involving multiplication and addition or
subtraction using appropriate strategies and tools, we are guided by the following:
Understand
• Know what is asked in the problem
• Know what are the given facts
• If any, determine the hidden questions
Plan
• Determine the operations to be used
• Write the number sentence
Solve
• Show the solution
Check and Look Back
• Check your answer
• State the complete answer
Example:
Jeepney fares from Lipa to Batangas cost Php 9.00 for the first kilometers and Php 1.50 for
the next additional kilometer or a part of a kilometer thereof. How much will Louise pay for his
7-kilometer trip?

Understand:
• What is asked in the problem?
Amount will Louise paid for his 7 kilometer trip.
• What are the given facts?
Php 9.00 cost of first 4 kilometers; Php 1.50 cost for the next kilometer;
7 kilometer trip
Plan:
Operation to be used?
Multiplication, addition, and subtraction
Number Sentence:
(7 – 4 x 1.50) + 9.00 = n
Solve:
Step 1: 7km Step 2: 3km Step 3: Php 9.00
- 4km x 1.50 + Php 4.50
3km excess of 4 km 4.50 Php 13.50

Check and Look Back:

Php 13.50 amount paid by Louise for a 7-kilometer trip
