I am convinced that gender inequality negatively affects people of all ages and
genders. Gender discrimination and stereotypes affect children's sense of self from a
young age. Sons receive more attention and pocket money from parents than daughters.
The young are also impacted in terms of behaviour, study, choices, ambitions and
attitudes about relationships. Women retire with half the superannuation savings of men,
affecting women's financial security and wellbeing. Trans and gender diverse people
may feel forced to hide their gender identity from everyone. They are at risk of mental
illness, verbal and physical abuse and social exclusion. Another fundamental impact of
gender inequality can be seen on men. Traditional stereotypes are difficult for many men
to live up to. They have trouble trying to be regarded as a ‘real man’, to be physically
and emotionally strong, and to be the main income earner. Many workplaces don’t offer
men extended parental leave or flexible hours. With that much intense pressure, men
are likely to commit suicidal.
