There weren’t any hospitals and smallpox was a big problem.
Edward Jenner was a British doctor at this time. He was the
first person to develop a vaccine for smallpox. A vaccine stops
people getting ill. Jenner’s first patient was a young boy. His
name was James Phipps. The vaccine for smallpox was an
amazing discovery. This was the only vaccine in the world for
many years.
Later, in the 19th century, Louis Pasteur was the first person
to develop more vaccines for different illnesses. He wasn’t
a doctor. He was a French scientist. His work was very
important and it continues to save millions of lives around the
world today.
