La metamorfosis
Cuando Gregorio Samsa se despertó una mañana después de un
sueño intranquilo, se encontró sobre su cama convertido en un
monstruoso insecto. Estaba tumbado sobre su espalda dura, y en forma
de caparazón y, al levantar un poco la cabeza, veía un vientre
abombado, parduzco, dividido por partes duras en forma de arco, sobre
cuya protuberancia apenas podía mantenerse el cobertor, a punto ya de
resbalar al suelo. Sus muchas patas, ridículamente pequeñas en
comparación con el resto de su tamaño, le vibraban desamparadas ante
los ojos.
«¿Qué me ha ocurrido?», pensó. No era un sueño. Su
habitación, una auténtica habitación humana, si bien algo pequeña,
permanecía tranquila entre las cuatro paredes harto conocidas. Por
encima de la mesa, sobre la que se encontraba extendido un muestrario
de paños desempaquetados – Samsa era viajante de comercio –, estaba
colgado aquel cuadro, que hacía poco había recortado de una revista y
había colocado en un bonito marco dorado. Representaba a una dama
ataviada con un sombrero y una boa” de piel, que estaba allí, sentada
muy erguida y levantaba hacia el observador un pesado manguito de
piel, en el cual había desaparecido su antebrazo.
La mirada de Gregorio se dirigió después hacia la ventana, y el
tiempo lluvioso se oían caer gotas de lluvia sobre la chapa del alfeizar
de la ventana – le ponía muy melancólico. « ¿Qué pasaría – pensó – si
durmiese un poco más y olvidase todas las chifladuras?» Pero esto era
algo absolutamente imposible, porque estaba acostumbrado a dormir
del lado derecho, pero en su estado actual no podía ponerse de ese lado.
Aunque se lanzase con mucha fuerza hacia el lado derecho, una y otra
vez se volvía a balancear sobre la espalda. Lo intentó cien veces,
cerraba los ojos para no tener que ver las patas que pataleaban, y sólo
cejaba en su empeño cuando comenzaba a notar en el costado un dolor
leve y sordo que antes nunca había sentido.
«Dios mío!», pensó. «¡Qué profesión tan dura he elegido! Un
día sí y otro también de viaje.
The Metamorphosis
One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams,
he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous
bug. He lay on his armour-hard back and saw, as he lifted his head up a little,
his brown, arched abdomen divided up into rigid bow-like sections. From this
height the blanket, just about ready to slide off completely, could hardly stay
in place. His numerous legs, pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his
circumference, flickered helplessly before his eyes.
What's happened to me," he thought. It was no dream. His room, a
proper room for a human being, only somewhat too small, lay quietly between
the four well-known walls. Above the table, on which an unpacked collection
of sample cloth goods was spread out (Samsa was a traveling salesman) hung
the picture which he had cut out of an illustrated magazine a little while ago
and set in a pretty gilt frame. It was a picture of a woman with a fur hat and a
fur boa. She sat erect there, lifting up in the direction of the viewer a solid fur
muff into which her entire forearm disappeared.
Gregor's glance then turned to the window. The dreary weather (the
rain drops were falling audibly down on the metal window ledge) made him
quite melancholy. "Why don't I keep sleeping for a little while longer and
forget all this foolishness," he thought. But this was entirely impractical, for
he was used to sleeping on his right side, and in his present state he couldn't
get himself into this position. No matter how hard he threw himself onto his
right side, he always rolled again onto his back. He must have tried it a
hundred times, closing his eyes, so that he would not have to see the wriggling
legs, and gave up only when he began to feel a light, dull pain in his side
which he had never felt before.
"O God," he thought, "what a demanding job I've chosen! Day in, day
out on the road.

nada más. No obstante, durante algún rato pude ver, pero ¡con qué terrible
exageración! Veía los labios de los jueces vestidos de negro: eran blancos,
más blancos que la hoja de papel sobre la que estoy escribiendo estas
palabras; y delgados hasta lo grotesco, adelgazados por la intensidad de su
dura expresión, de su resolución inexorable, del riguroso desprecio al dolor
humano. Veía que los decretos de lo que para mí representaba el Destino
salían aún de aquellos labios. Los vi retorcerse en una frase mortal, les vi
pronunciar las sílabas de mi nombre, y me estremecí al ver que el sonido no
seguía al movimiento.Durante varios momentos de espanto frenético vi
también la blanda y casi imperceptible ondulación de las negras colgaduras
que cubrían las paredes de la sala, y mi vista cayó entonces sobre los siete
grandes hachones que se habían colocado sobre la mesa. Tomaron para mí,
al principio, el aspecto de la caridad, y los imaginé ángeles blancos y esbeltos
que debían salvarme. Pero entonces, y de pronto, una náusea mortal invadió
mi alma, y sentí que cada fibra de mi ser se estremecía como si hubiera
estado en contacto con el hilo de una batería galvánica. Y las formas
angélicas convertíanse en insignificantes espectros con cabeza de llama, y
claramente comprendí que no debía esperar de ellos auxilio alguno.
Entonces, como una magnífica nota musical, se insinuó en mi imaginación la
idea del inefable reposo que nos espera en la tumba. Llegó suave,
furtivamente; creo que necesité un gran rato para apreciarla por completo.
Pero en el preciso instante en que mi espíritu comenzaba a sentir claramente
esa idea, y a acariciarla, las figuras de los jueces se desvanecieron como por
arte de magia; los grandes hachones se redujeron a la nada; sus llamas se
apagaron por completo, y sobrevino la negrura de las tinieblas; todas las
sensaciones parecieron desaparecer como en una zambullida loca y
precipitada del alma en el Hades. Y el Universo fue sólo noche, silencio,
inmovilidad.

I was sick—sick unto death with that long agony; and when they at length
unbound me, and I was permitted to sit, I felt that my senses were leaving
me. The sentence—the dread sentence of death—was the last of distinct
accentuation which reached my ears. After that, the sound of the
inquisitorial voices seemed merged in one dreamy indeterminate hum. It
conveyed to my soul the idea of revolution—perhaps from its association in
fancy with the burr of a mill wheel. This only for a brief period; for presently I
heard no more. Yet, for a while, I saw; but with how terrible an exaggeration!
I saw the lips of the black-robed judges. They appeared to me white—whiter
than the sheet upon which I trace these words—and thin even to
grotesqueness; thin with the intensity of their expression of firmness—of
immoveable resolution—of stern contempt of human torture. I saw that the
decrees of what to me was Fate, were still issuing from those lips. I saw them
writhe with a deadly locution. I saw them fashion the syllables of my name;
and I shuddered because no sound succeeded. I saw, too, for a few moments
of delirious horror, the soft and nearly imperceptible waving of the sable
draperies which enwrapped the walls of the apartment. And then my vision
fell upon the seven tall candles upon the table. At first they wore the aspect
of charity, and seemed white and slender angels who would save me; but
then, all at once, there came a most deadly nausea over my spirit, and I felt
every fibre in my frame thrill as if I had touched the wire of a galvanic
battery, while the angel forms became meaningless spectres, with heads of
flame, and I saw that from them there would be no help. And then there
stole into my fancy, like a rich musical note, the thought of what sweet rest
there must be in the grave. The thought came gently and stealthily, and it
seemed long before it attained full appreciation; but just as my spirit came at
length properly to feel and entertain it, the figures of the judges vanished, as
if magically, from before me; the tall candles sank into nothingness; their
flames went out utterly; the blackness of darkness supervened; all sensations
appeared swallowed up in a mad rushing descent as of the soul into Hades.
Then silence, and stillness, night were the universe.
LA TUMBA by Howard Phillips Lovecraft
Al abordar las circunstancias que han provocado mi reclusión en este
asilo para enfermos mentales, soy consciente de que mi actual situación
provocará las lógicas reservas acerca de la autenticidad de mi relato. Es
una desgracia que el común de la humanidad sea demasiado estrecha de
miras para sopesar con calma e inteligencia ciertos fenómenos aislados
que subyacen más allá de su experiencia común, y que son vistos y
sentidos tan sólo por algunas personas psíquicamente sensibles. Los
hombres de más amplio intelecto saben que no existe una verdadera
distinción entre lo real y lo irreal; que todas las cosas aparecen tal como
son tan sólo en virtud de los frágiles sentidos físicos y mentales
mediante los que las percibimos; pero el prosaico materialismo de la

THE TOMB
In relating the circumstances which have led to my confinement within
this refuge for the demented, I am aware that my present position will
create a natural doubt of the authenticity of my narrative. It is an
unfortunate fact that the bulk of humanity is too limited in its mental
vision to weigh with patience and intelligence those isolated
phenomena, seen and felt only by a psychologically sensitive few,
which lie outside its common experience. Men of broader intellect
know that there is no sharp distinction betwixt the real and the unreal;
that all things appear as they do only by virtue of the delicate individual
physical and mental media through which we are made conscious of
them; but the prosaic materialism of the majority condemns as madness
the flashes of supersight which penetrate the common veil of obvious
empricism.
My name is Jervas Dudley, and from earliest childhood I have been a
dreamer and a visionary. Wealthy beyond the necessity of a commercial
life, and temperamentally unfitted for the formal studies and social
recreation of my acquaintances, I have dwelt ever in realms apart from
the visible world; spending my youth and adolescence in ancient and
little known books, and in roaming the fields and groves of the region
near my ancestral home.
