DMN-WESTINGHOUSE Explosion-Proof Rotary Valves

The Rotary valves are explosion proof tested according to VDI 2263 Part 3.
Certified to have a pressure shock resistance of 10 bar and flame proof ness.

Excluded are:
- Type BL enlarged inlet
- Aluminium castings
- Rotor executions with Plastic (Teflon, Polyurethane, etc), or scraper
blades

Ambient temperature

Operate rotary valves at an ambient temperature of –20°C to +40°C.

Conveying air temperature

The conveying air must not exceed a temperature of +70°C.

Surface temperature
The surface temperature of the rotary valve depends on the temperature of the
product to be handled.
The recommended maximum product temperature for the rotary valve is +150°C
depending on the type of rotary valve.
The temperature increase of the valve by failure is T=50°C.

Marked temperature if equipment is subject to type testing (EN-13463-1)

T=50°C = measured maximum surface temperature + 5 K

If rotary valve is supplied bare shaft.

Maximum surface temperature of the bare shaft Rotary valve is 120°C/T4.
(calculation: conveying air 70°C +(T=50°C) =120°C)

Relationship of the maximum surface temperature of the equipment and the

minimum ignition temperature of dust cloud and dust layer.

Dust cloud.
Maximum surface temperature = 2/3 x Minimum Ignition Temperature

Dust layer up to 5mm.

Maximum surface temperature = Smouldering Temperature – 75 K
Depending on the properties of the product to be handled, it can be necessary to
reduce the frictional area of the blades that maintain the air pressure in the valve.
This can be done in the first instance by using blades that are chamfered on 3 sides.

Examples: PVC powder tends to smear, Sugar glazes etc.

If in doubt please contact DMN.

If the properties of the product to be handled are not known then the surface
temperature must be checked several times after starting the valve to see if there is
a temperature increase.

If the surface temperature is higher then listed on the nameplate,

the rotary valve must be stopped immediately.
It is not allowed to exceed above the maximum surface temperature
listed on the nameplate.

If in doubt please contact DMN.

The plant operator must ensure that any possible dust accumulation does not
exceed a maximum thickness of 5 mm in accordance with EN50281-1-2.

There must be no flammable solvents within the dust.

 Dust- or Gas area
 Temperature class
 Maximum surface temperature

If an explosion takes place the rotary valve must stop immediately,

a sensor suited for the purpose must do this automatically.
This to prevent transport of burning or smoldering product over
the rotary valve further into the system.
The sensor and control unit are not part of the standard supply of
DMN.
Ensure that a sensor and control unit are installed in the system.

The DMN-WESTINGHOUSE rotary valves are pressure shock

resistant up to 10 bar.
If an explosion could occur above 10 bar, then the user of this
equipment must ensure adequate safety measures are installed.

Turning the rotor is prohibited.

5. Inspection and Maintenance

The interval between overhauls will vary according to the product being handled and
should be based on total operating time. To a large degree the rate of wear for a
particular application will be ascertained by practical experience.
It is recommended that the complete rotary valve is dismantled for cleaning,
inspection and overhaul as necessary at regular intervals.

The plant operator must ensure that any possible dust

accumulation does not exceed a maximum thickness of 5 mm in
accordance with EN50281-1-2.

5.1. Checking rotor clearances

When the Rotary valves are used in abrasive applications,

regularly check the clearances between rotor and Body/Cover.
 Check clearances using the following Table.

Type Size Dust class Max. Cleareance

Gland seals
In case of gland seals by means of gland packing it is necessary before starting the
system to fasten the gland in order to set the gland packing in such a way that it seals
and the rotor will be able to run.

Adjustment of the gland packing seals should be made with the unit in stationary
condition. The gland follower should be tightened up evenly and only to prevent
leakage. The necessity of good gland maintain is very important to prevent
contamination and also unnecessary wear.

If normal adjustment is insufficient to prevent leakage or overheating, the gland

packing should be completely renewed.

Replace the gland packing as follows:

- Withdraw gland follower (421) and pull these against the ball-bearing place.
Remove the old gland packing using a suitable packing extractor tool.

Examine shaft journal for wear. Excessive wear or scoring in this

area will reduce the effective life of the packing.

Rotor with fixed blades

Fig. 3.1.4.3.1 Adjustment for axial clearance.

The rotor must be adjusted in axial direction (at both sides) with a tolerance between
the machined surfaces of the rotor.

- Push the rotor hard against the inside face of the end cover at the non-drive
end.
- Measure the total end clearance. Equalise this clearance by placing a feeler
gauge between the vane and the non-drive end cover.
- Tighten locknut until the gauge is just nipped in position.
- Secure the locknut.
- Now tighten the locknut at the drive end until the feeler gauge can be removed.
- Secure drive end locknut and check that both end clearances are equal.

Rotor with adjustable blades

Adjustment of axial rotor as described under rotor with fixed blades.

Axial/radial adjustment of the rotor blades:

The tolerances for the axial adjustment of the rotor blades are the same as stated
for the rotor.
The radial clearance should normally be between 0.12-0.17 mm (see table page 21)
but it is preferable to try and achieve a smallest possible clearance (i.e. 0.12-0.15
mm).
Feeler gauges or copper shims of the correct thickness should be used for adjusting
clearances. They are placed between the loose rotor blades and the cylindrical wall
of the body. (i.e. adjacent to the inlet opening and as close to the end covers as
possible).

- Adjust axial/radial clearance and rotor blade using feeler gauges or copper
shims of the correct thickness.
- Above described adjustment has to be executed with all blades.

Fig. 3.1.4.3.3 Adjustment scraper blades.

Adjustment of scraper blades:

The axial clearance must be adjusted to a slightly closer tolerance (0.05-0.08 mm).
Use again feeler gauges or copper shims of the correct thickness.
The two scraper blades are set with the correct clearance at one side.
Blade L on the left side, blade R is set on the right side with the correct clearance.

After adjustment of the blade feeler gauges or copper shims

STOP must be removed. Never let them remain in the valve.

Rotor with adjustable synthetic or flexible blades

- Average the axial clearance of the rotor blades.

- Adjust radially with zero clearance.
- Fasten clamp plate simultaneously.

Check the final adjustment by turning the rotor by hand. If larger valves of 300 and
350 size have flexible blades it may be necessary to rotate by lever action. If steel
blades are used the rotor should turn noiselessly.

- Assemble cover.
- Assemble gland (3.1.3.2).
- Mount drive parts (3.6).

After assembly test run the valve.

Clearance depends of size valve and product temperature and valve material.
See enclosed table of clearances for the right adjustment of the rotor.

To achieve rotor end clearance stated above a gasket is fitted between the body and
end cover non-drive end.

For instructions to adjust the rotor and blades see chapter 3.1.4.3 of the AL/BL
series instruction manual.

Lubrication data
The interval between overhauls will vary with the product being handled and should
be based on total operating time. To a large degree the rate of wear for a particular
application would be assembled by practical experience.

Maintenance apart from planned overhaul should be adequately covered by regular

and frequent attention to the rotor shaft glands, bearings, reduction gear lubrication
and adjustment and lubrication of the motor drive chain and chain sprockets.

Bearing of the rotor shaft (for product temperature up to max. 250C)

The bearings fitted in the rotary valve are roller bearings (105).

Apply a few shots of Klüber HM 83-402 to the bearing grease nipple’s (170) using a
gun before starting the valve and at any future opportunity when the valves are
'cool'.

Check bearing monthly and grease if necessary.

Do not apply to valves when hot as the carrier in the lubricant will 'FLASH OFF'.

Drive chain and sprockets

Lubricate with ROCOL FOLIAC L621 monthly.

4.5 Cleaners
Do not use cleaner with solvent.
If using a cleaner with solvent is necessary, make sure that solvent can not
reach bearing and sealing.

In case of high-pressure cleaning, pay attention to the ball-

STOP bearing. Damaging the sealing of the ball-bearing may cause
malfunctioning of the bearing.

4.6 Lubricants

Lubricant Type Supplier Application

Retinax EP2 General
Bolt
Cassida RLS2 Shell Food NSF H1
Chain Retinax EP2 General

The bearings fitted in the rotary valve are dust-proof ball-bearings. These bearings
are lubricated for life and does not require further maintenance.

5. Malfunction

5.1 Probable cause

Common disturbances and possible solutions are stated below.

If you are not able to solve the problem, please contact our service department.

Installation and Safety instructions
General
 Read Operation instructions before commissioning (sent by e-mail to system integrator / end user).
 The rotary valves must not be put into service until the equipment into which they have been incorporated have
been declared in conformity with the Machinery Directive.

Transport
 Use adequate transport and lifting equipment.

Installation and assembly

 Only competent persons are allowed to maintain the valve.
 Electrical parts must be connected by a qualified specialist.
 When product qualities necessitate supplementary safety instructions and wearing protective equipment, it is
obligatory to follow the local safety instructions.
 Check the valve externally for damage and internally for foreign objects.
 Explosion-Proof Rotary valves
- Check if the information on the nameplate of the Rotary valve corresponds with the potentially
explosive on-site atmosphere.
- If the valve is a flame barrier, the transport of burning or smouldering product over
the rotary valve must be prevented.
- Make sure that a sensor and control unit are installed in the system to stop the valve.
- Check rotor clearances.
 The rotary valve is intended to be incorporated into or assembled with other machinery or equipment.
- Installation in fully enclosed pipe work. When installed the pipe work will prevent access to the moving
parts.
- The valve must not be used if either connection remains unconnected.
 The rotary valve contains moving parts that can be injurious. It is the responsibility of the system integrator
/ end user to ensure the safe installation and operation of the valve.
In particular it must be adequately protected and guarded, in compliance with local health and safety
regulations.
 When installing the valve make sure it is not unevenly loaded by external forces or vibrations.
 The chain drive must be protected by a guard.
 The T-bolt switch must be connected to the client safety circuit, which will stop or prevent the valve from
operating. (MZC execution)
 The safety switch must be connected to the client safety circuit, which will stop or prevent the valve from
operating. (option)

Start up and operation

 Check the rotating direction of the valve rotor. It should rotate clockwise seen from the drive end (see direction
of the arrow).
 Check the voltage of the electrical parts.
 Check the shaft seal and air purge pressure, if applicable.
 Remove the plug that is fitted for transportation purposes from the gear box, if applicable.

Maintenance
 While the valve is in operation no maintenance or repair work must be carried out.
 The motor must be isolated before disassembly, cleaning or maintenance is carried out.
