Article 01
It’s personalised. This is often one of the most attractive reasons for opting out of traditional
schooling. Whilst parents are responsible for ensuring education provided at home is efficient,
full-time, and suitable, it doesn’t need to follow the national curriculum. Learning can therefore
be fully tailored to the individual child: their pace, interests, and preferred learning style.
Children can take ownership of their learning. Some home-schooling families give their child
autonomy, letting them take the lead on their own education with their parents’ support. Many
parents advocate that this can help nurture their child’s natural curiosity and develop their
independence and confidence.
It can strengthen family bonds. Whilst this is difficult to measure and will likely vary from one
family to another, many home-schoolers report improved family relationships, due to increased
time spent together, working towards a shared goal.
Considerations before homeschooling Socialising. Of course, schools offer a lot more than just
an academic education. Children who attend school have opportunities to experience
collaborative group-working; are exposed to a variety of personalities and views; and are able to
form relationships with peers of their own age. You’ll need to consider how your home-educated
child will receive these opportunities so that they can develop their social resilience and form
friendships.
Access to higher education. This can be a concern for parents home-schooling in the latter
stages of education. It can be a challenge to provide both the academic support required to
achieve suitable A-level grades (especially when parents don’t have the subject background
themselves), as well as the support required for the selection and application processes. It’s no
surprise that many home-schooling families therefore turn to subject specific tutors and services
like Kumon’s maths and English programmes.

Article 03
The assessment meeting is a great opportunity for you and your child to meet your Kumon
Instructor. Should you enroll, your Instructor will be working closely with your child throughout
their entire Kumon journey – observing, guiding, and setting work at just the right level to keep
them motivated and making progress.
We hope this initial meeting, whether in-person or online, will be the start of a fruitful and trusting
relationship.
Understandably, your child may be a little apprehensive about this part, but our Instructors are
experts at encouragement, praise, and getting the best out of children. Your Instructor will tailor
the test to your child, covering comfortable questions that will encourage them to show off their
abilities, as well as tougher questions that may stretch and challenge them.
Throughout the test, your Instructor will make careful observations, not just on your child’s
academic understanding, but also their study skills and attitude to learning; everything from
posture and technique, to concentration and confidence.
Step 3: Test feedback
Your Instructor’s observations, along with your child’s test scores, will help your Instructor build
up a comprehensive picture of your child’s current abilities as well as areas for development.
Your Instructor will feed this back to you, along with a suitable starting point in the Kumon
programme for your child, should you choose to enrol. Starting points at Kumon are purposefully
set at a level that covers already-familiar work, as the relative ease of the questions allows for
the development of other important skills.
By this point in your assessment meeting, your Instructor will have a clear idea of suitable short-
and long-term goals for your child.
Short-term goals will include initial skills to be developed whilst the work remains academically
straightforward for your child, such as posture, speed, and carefulness. Longer-term goals will
include your child’s study projection for the coming months: the level of the programme your
Instructor expects your child to reach, how long that will take, and the skills they’ll develop along
the way. These skills will benefit your child across all subjects at school.
Finally, to help you decide if Kumon is the right option for you, you’ll want to discuss how it will fit
into your family life. Kumon is a long-term study programme, so committing to good habits from
the outset will set your child up well for future success.
For your child, this will involve habits such as daily study and remembering to time their work. As
the parent, you’ll need to facilitate a routine, mark your child’s work daily, and of course,
occasionally be their study motivator as they work towards becoming an independent learner.
