For the E-Flow Air Purifier, Tony was inspired by the work of architects like Zaha Hadid, Natural Sketch
Santiago Calatrava and Gaudi. He modeled Calatrava’s Umbracle, a curved walkway with shaded - Sketch naturally and intuitively in 3D.
forms designed to protect biodiversity, using the platform’s design tools. Tony used this as the
baseline for his design concepts using Natural Sketch and 3D Pattern Shape Creator. - Easily generate complete 3D plans.

The upper surface of Tony’s E-Flow Air Purifier took on its undulating shape in a digital clay
modeling app in Creative Design (Imagine & Shape). In this phase, Tony drew inspiration from Creative Design, Imagine & Shape
shapes and movement in the natural world – like the graceful movement of manta rays.
- Intuitively create fluid shapes with digital clay modeling.
He then used generative shape design through parametrization on the lower surface of the
model. This part is stylized but also complex because it contains mechanical components. - No data interruption between styling and engineering.

On the E-Flow Air Purifier, Tony seamlessly moved on to model the components, including an
electric motor and LED elements that naturally purify the air. The challenge was to ensure air
could pass through the arms while they were rotating. So Tony created a motor with rotating
collectors that was connected to the surfaces using supports with fins. The luminous LED
“totem” with the upper electrical circuit was also attached to the supports. He used CATIA apps
in the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud Platform to quickly create a high-quality mechanical design.

Tony didn’t start his design career with access to simulation tools. But now, running simulations
using Structural Designer has “become second nature,” he reports. The E-Flow Air Purifier
underwent a series of cycles of integrated design and simulation to test stiffness, deformation,
internal constraints and more.

PLATFORM
Tony drew on performance-driven generative design to optimize the structure and fluid flow
of the E-Flow design. By this stage in the design process, Tony had settled on a suspension
system. He needed the elements to be light and discreet. Using topological optimization, he
lightweighted the shape and removed all unnecessary volumes.

He then optimized the shape to support the flow of air as it enters the chamber and is
distributed via ten undulating arms. He used Performance-Driven Generative Design to ensure
homogeneous aeration and avoid any loss of pressure as the air is released. Thanks to the app, he
was able to automatically adjust the shape and validate it against overall product requirements.

Tony turned to 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace to 3D print some of the components he designed
for the E-Flow Air Purifier. This allowed him to test out different materials and textures in a real-
life setting. On top of that, it gave him the freedom to experiment with sustainable materials
– new plastics designed to be recycled and reused.

THE 3DEXPERIENCE CLOUD
The E-Flow Air Purifier design process was, Tony says, truly collaborative. “Across the lifespan PLATFORM
of the project, I worked with people like Pierre (generative design expert Pierre Pagliughi) and
Lyna (simulation expert Lyna Etienne Lenormand) to optimize the design and explore more
creative possibilities.

“Cloud collaboration was a huge part of how we were

able to move the project forward so quickly. ”

I was able to share ideas with them and other stakeholders while easily managing who had
access to what information in a secure and transparent way.”

Another benefit of working on the cloud: Tony was able to adapt his way of working to
his nomadic lifestyle. During the project, he travelled to South Africa, where he met with
a community of industrial designers. He set up camp in a coworking space and switched
seamlessly from sketching on his tablet to designing on his laptop. 10
