1.2.1 Orientation
1.2.2 Structure
In the UMG8900 cabinet, standard 19-inch frames are used together with air
deflectors for ventilation and heat dissipation inside the cabinet. Under different
service requirements and environments, different boards are used in MGW frames.
The UMG8900 adopts a distributed hardware structure and uses multiple kinds of
boards to bear and convert different services. Table 1-1, Table 1-2, Table 1-3, Table
1-4, Table 1-5, and Table 1-6 show the boards used in the UMG8900 and their

HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 1 Overview of UMG8900
To implement MSC functions of the mobile core network, the UMG8900 must work
with MSC Server. Besides, the UMG8900 is required to manage and maintain the
equipment through Local Maintenance Terminal (LMT) and to realize alarm function
by means of using auxiliary alarm box.
The MSC Server is used to implement call control and resource management
functions. It can be either the MSOFTX3000 developed by Huawei or the equipment
supplied by other vendors, which supports Third Generation Partnership Project
(3GPP) media resource control protocols, such as Media Gateway Control (Megaco)
protocol and H.248 protocol.
The LMT is the operation and maintenance client that manages and maintains the
UMG8900 system. The LMT, together with the UMG8900, constitutes the
Client/Server architecture. The LMT works in the PC where Windows 2000,
Windows NT or Windows XP runs and has no special requirements for the hardware.
The alarm box is a universal alarm box provided by Huawei. For detailed
specifications and information, refer to Universal Alarm Box User Manual.
I. Electric Specifications
The UMG8900 uses two –48 V DC power supplies. The power cables are led out of
the DC power distribution cabinet and connected to the power distribution frame in
the top of the UMG8900 cabinet. The DC power distribution frame is supplied by two
–48 V DC power supplies. If there is only one –48 V DC input power supply, it is
required to divide the one into two at the input terminal of the power distribution
frame. The DC power distribution frame then divides the two –48 V DC power
supplies into six power supplies and provides them to three MGW frames with two
power supplies for each. In this way, it can realize power supply backup for frames
and ensure the stability and reliability of the power supplies as well. When three
frames are configured in a cabinet, the overall power consumption of the UMG8900
is less than 3300 W.

provides clock signals for other frames. It includes OMU, NET, TNU (TCLU in the case
of two or more-frame cascading), CLK and other service boards and interface boards.
The central switching frame implements frame cascading and service process
functions. It includes MPU, NET, TNU, FLU, BLU and other service boards and
interface boards.
The UMG8900 can accommodate nine MGW frames at most, of which one should be
configured as the main control frame. If there are multiple frames configured, it is
required to configure the central switching frame to subtend all service frames.
The UMG8900 adopts semi-integrated frame structure, with embedded filter box,
transfer box and fan box. The front board and back board in an MGW frame are
different in height. The front board is 9U high and the back board is 8U high. At the

Chapter 3 Boards
The UMG8900 can be applied to multiple cases due to its flexible board configuration
capability. It provides multiple boards. Some of them have similar functions but different
applications. For the management convenience, boards are divided into logical boards
and physical boards.
I. Logical Boards
A logical board is the group of one or more physical boards with the same or similar
functions. Different logical boards represent different functional characteristics. Logical
boards are used for service data configuration, alarm output and handling.
Physical boards are different in their interfaces, performance, positions and hardware
and software configurations. A physical board is identified by the name and code on its
handle bar. Physical boards are used for equipment configuration and management,
software loading, LMT panel display, and other cases that need to distinguish physical
boards.
Table 3-1 shows the corresponding relationships between logical boards and physical
boards.

board board
In the UMG8900, boards are divided into front boards, back boards and backplanes
according to their positions. The front boards are inserted into the front backplane (in
the middle of a service frame), while the back boards into the rear backplane.
The front boards are all 9U (1 U = 44.45 mm) high, including service boards and
control and management boards, and the back boards are all 8 U high, including
protocol processing boards and interface boards. The backplane provides signal
interconnection between boards. Figure 3-1 shows the connection between boards and
backplane buses.

Caution:
Figure 3-1 only shows the connection relations between backplane buses and boards
rather than slots position. Because front boards and back boards have different lengths,
front boards cannot be plugged into the rear backplane or back boards not into the front
backplane. Some boards have to be installed in fixed slots. For information about board
positions, refer to the specific descriptions of the boards.
To improve the reliability of the system, main control boards and service boards support
1 + 1 backup function. Service boards and interface boards are plugged to the two
sides of a backplane respectively, and main control boards and NET boards are also to
two sides of a backplane.
The UMG8900 boards contain maintenance BUS (MBus) modules. The MBus module
of a service board communicates with the main control board in the same frame
through the controller area network (CAN) bus. The main control board is responsible
for board version management, status query, board power-on/off control, reset, serial
port communication, environment monitor, alarm management and so on.
All boards are hot swappable. Each board has a hot swap indicator “OFFLINE” on its
front panel and a hot swap switch under its ejector lever. When a board is inserted into
a frame and the ejector levers snap in place, the hot swap switch is on. When the

ejector levers are pulled out, the switch is off and the hot swap indicator lights up,
indicating that the board can be pulled out.
3.2 MBKP
The MBKP provides the following signal interconnection channels for the boards in the
MGW frame:
z Control signal channel: 100 Mbit/s FE channel and MBus differential serial bus
from master and slave OMUs/MPUs to other boards
z High-speed TDM data channel: 777 Mbit/s high-speed low-voltage differential
signaling (LVDS) channel from the TNU/TCLU to other TDM service interface
boards
z High-speed packet data channel: 1.25 Gbit/s or 2.5 Gbit/s high-speed LVDS
channel from the NET to packet service boards
z Cascading signal channel: High-speed LVDS channel and low-voltage
transistor-transistor logic (LVTTL) state identification signal channel from the FLU
and BLU to the NET and TNU/TCLU
z Clock signal assignment channel: channel for distributing clock signals provided
by the CLK from the NET to service boards
Besides, the backplane provides service boards with –48 V power supply and 5 V
MBus power supply. The pins for power supply, grounding and signals in the backplane
are designed in different lengths so as to avoid mis-plugging boards.
3.3 OMU
3.3.1 Functions
The OMU in the UMG8900 is responsible for managing and maintaining the equipment.
When only one frame is configured, the OMU maintains and manages the boards of the
frame, and provides a control plane to exchange control information between boards.
When multiple frames are cascaded, the OMU is only configured in the main control
frame, and the other frames have MPUs maintain and manage the boards in the
frames.
The OMU provides embedded hard disk as the back administration module (BAM),
which together with the LMT is designed in the Server/Client structure. Through the
graphic man-machine language (MML) interface provided by the LMT, you can manage
and maintain the equipment.
3-5
Hardware Description Manual
HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Chapter 3 Boards
As the management and control center of the whole equipment, the OMU enables the
following functions:
z Providing packet switching function at the control plane to communicate with all
the boards with FE control interfaces in presence of a single frame and to
exchange information with other frames and manage interfaces in the multi-frame
cascading case.
z Monitoring and managing the states of all boards in the equipment. When multiple
frames are cascaded, the OMU monitors and manages MPUs in other frames
through cascaded control planes.
z Embedding a BAM, which provides MML and Telnet interfaces to configure and
maintain boards, and saves log files and alarm information.
z Implementing state monitoring and power-on/off management on the equipment
through special MBus modules; avoiding attack from instant currents by
controlling board power-on sequence.
The difference between the OMU and MPU is that the OMU monitors and manages all
boards of the equipment, while the MPU only monitors and manages the boards of the
frame where it resides.

3.15 BLU
3.15.1 Functions
The BLU, the back cascading board, provides cascading interfaces for TDM and IP
packet data channels and IP packet control channels.
Every two BLUs (master and slave) can cascade one service frame to the central
switching frame, and thus total six service frames can be cascaded; the central
switching frame connects the main control frame directly; FE channels on the NET can
cascade the extended control frame to the central switching frame. To sum up, the
UMG8900 supports at most nine-frame cascading.
The BLU corresponds to the two physical boards, provides 24 k TDM cascading
channels between frames, and provides 32 k TDM cascading channels.
Figure 3-16 shows the appearance and components of the BLU, provide three 8 k TDM

S4, S5, S2 and S3 are all 8-bit DIP switches, which are used to set grounding mode for
T1 cables. T1 twisted pair with 120 ohm impedance shall ground in a balanced mode.
S4 is used to set grounding mode for T1 cables 0 to 7, S5 for T1 cables 8 to 15, S2 for
T1 cables 16 to 23, and S3 for T1 cables 24 to 31.
For T1 twisted pair with 120 ohm impedance, the corresponding DIP switches are set to
"OFF".
S9, S10, S11, S12, S13, S14, S15 and S16 are all 8-bit DIP switches, which are used in
combination to set resistance for T1 cables. The switch bits 1 and 5 of the S12 are used
to set resistance for T1 cable 0. Table 3-77 shows the setting methods.
The switch bits 2 and 6 of S12 are used to set resistance for T1 cable 1, the switch bits
3 and 7 of S12 are used to set resistance for T1 cable 2, and switch bits 4 and 8 of S12
are used to set resistance for T1 cable 3. The setting methods are the same as
described in Table 3-77.
DIP switches S11, S10, S9, S16, S15, S14 and S13 are used to set resistance for T1
cables 4 to 7, 8 to 11, 12 to 15, 16 to 19, 20 to 23, 24 to 27 and 28 to 31 respectively.
That is, each DIP switch can set resistance for four T1 cables, and the setting method is
the same as described in Table 3-77.

The straight through network cable is used to connect a terminal device and network,
for example, to connect LMT or NMS workstation through network. The crossover
network cable is used to connect two terminal devices, for example, to connect LMTs
and the equipment through maintenance network ports for debugging purpose.
When the debugging network port provided by the MOMU is connected to PC directly,
crossover network cable will be used. If the port is connected to PC through Hub or
LAN Switch, straight through network cable will be used.
RJ-45 connector is also called crystal connector, used to connect Ethernet ports. It
can be used for UTP-3, UTP-5 or STP.
Note:
The maximum transmission distance of UTP-5 is 100 m if no repeater is applied.
When repeaters are applied, the spacing must not be more than 5 m, and only two
repeaters are allowed to use due to delay and signal time. In this case, the maximum
distance between two stations is 205 m.
To ensure the optimal electrical transmission, it is required that wires 1 and 2, and
wires 3 and 6 are just twisted pairs.

HUAWEI UMG8900 Universal Media Gateway Appendix C Impedance Transfer Box
There are two types of impedance transfer box, namely, 120 ohm – 75 ohm transfer
box with the BNC socket and 120 ohm – 75 ohm transfer box with the SMB socket.
The dimensions for both types are 488 mm x 40 mm x 28 mm (length x width x height).
The two transfer boxes differ only in the 75 ohm coaxial connector, the SMB in one
type and the BNC in another, which can be adopted according to actual conditions.
Figure C-1 shows the usage of the impedance transfer box.
TX
RX
The impedance transfer box connects with the 75 ohm cable through the SMB or BNC
coaxial connector at one end, and connects with the 120 ohm cable through the
connector at the other end.
The 75 ohm cable connects with the female SMB connector or the male BNC
connector at one end, and connects with the cabling rack or directly with the
equipment at the other end. The 120 ohm cable connects with the 8-pin connector at
one end, and connects with the cabling rack or directly with the equipment at the other
end.
The operation of crimping the 75 ohm cable into the coaxial connector is relatively
simple and not introduced here. The special crimping pliers is needed to crimp the
120 ohm cable into the RJ45 connector.
Figure C-2 shows the appearance of the RJ45 connector.
Table C-1 shows the pin assignment of the RJ45 connector connecting with the 120
ohm twisted cable.
