PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

The organization that I am currently working for is called Community 43 in Phoenix, AZ.
We focus on being a clubhouse and wellness center for those living with sever mental
illness (SMI). Our model is new and unique because no other “ SMI clubhouse” has a
wellness center, or clinic, attached that fascilitates patients’ need for medical care. The
next unique thing is that we are the first of its kind in entire Arizona and the first off 300+
clubhouses around the world trying this new, often criticized, model. Now 3 years in, this
clubhouse appears to be thriving and on its way to breaking some norms within the SMI
community.

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

My roll within this organization as of right now is Social Practitioner by title but many
others things by trade. I work on grants in hopes that the nonprofit organization wins a
few to continue doing the work they do. I also focus on the analysis of data and the
extraction of it from raw souces, like documents. My favorite things about my role in this
organization is that no role is cemented and if one is in need of help, we are there to
ensure that we succeed together. This exists as in order to helps those that come to us for
aid, we must trust each other and be willing to work beyond their boundaries.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader
understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require
selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the
mass of information that might be included).

The situation I currently find myself in is the inability to get through another staff
member as to what is actually important in our jobs and what is superficial. Although
moslty an SMI center, we were referred an unhoused woman with SMI needs running

from domentic abuse. To gain access to our medical, you must be a member and have all
medical files available to us. Since she currently did not have that ability, I and other staff
members believed that finding her a safe environment was top priority whether she was a
member or not. The one staf member became aggressive and stated that it was not fair
that other members were waiting for their medial appointments while we were rushing to
help a random woman and pushing her to the front of the line. I believed that out of
principle, helping someone who has 0 ability to help themselves should be priority, while
the other staff member believes that those who have gone through the process first should
get priority.
