Which educational system functioned better: 20th century or 21st century?

All educational systems started out the same. They were established for roughly the same
period of time, about 100 years ago. Throughout that period of time, educational
developments kept on changing. Some educational systems became more rigid, while
others become flexible. And some were replaced by others, while others were further
developed and made even more revolutionary. The same set of rules and teaching
procedures were used for many decades. Until, industrial revolution changed everything.
Today, many people ask which educational system worked better: the 21st century or the
20th century. But, this paper will solely focus on the claim that 21st century functioned better.

21st Century education is student-centered with real-life, relevant, collaborative

project-based learning. It focuses on what students know, what they can do and are like after
all the details are forgotten unlike 20th century education who only focuses on memorization
of discreet facts. Moreover, 21st century classroom qualities are more in active learning
rather than passive learning. It is also research driven which means the contents comes
from the student's own research. 21st century education gives a great deal of student
freedom. It inspires creativity, encourages collaboration, expects and rewards critical
thinking, and teaches children not only how to communicate, but also the power of effective
communication. Here, students and teachers have mutually respectful relationships as
co-learner and this leads students to be highly motivated in their studies. Furthermore,
learning is designed on upper levels of Blooms’—synthesis, analysis and evaluation and
includes lower levels as curriculum. The role of educators in the 21st century should be
helping every student learn how to learn. It’s inspiring creativity, encouraging collaboration,
expecting and rewarding critical thinking, and teaching children not only how to
communicate, but also the power of effective communication. These are skills students need
to develop in order to thrive in today’s and tomorrow’s dynamic workplace. It is
student-centered which means the teachers only act as a facilitator or coach and help every
student learn how to learn. Before learners work in isolation within the 4 walls of the
classroom, in 21st century education, learners are required to work collaboratively with
classmates and others around the Global Classroom. Students today will likely have several
careers in their lifetime so they must develop strong critical thinking and interpersonal
communication skills in order to be successful in an increasingly fluid, interconnected, and
complex world.

Twenty-first century educational system is one that responds to the economical,

technological, and societal shifts that are happening at an ever-increasing pace. It’s an
education that sets children up to succeed in a world where more than half of the jobs they’ll
have over their careers don’t even exist yet. In short, it’s an education that provides students
with the skills and competencies they need to thrive in the 21st century. The
recommendation I can give to the Department of Education for greater effectiveness of the
21st educational system is to at least lessen some of the activities of the students to prevent
damage on their mental health regarding academic works, especially that COVID-19
pandemic still exist until this day.
