Revati - Come, let us move to the southern shores of enslaved India, where the
flames of arebellion seem to be igniting.

VELLORE REBELLION
Revati - What a sight it is, the beauty sO mesmerising.
Oh, but what a noise
there, too. Look howthe sparks of rebellion are burning.
Nalin -Some time ago, in the southern part of India, there was an atmosphere of
dance, and slowly, arebellion began to emerge. In history, it is known as the
Vellore Rebellion
Kevati - It so happened, that in the fatefl vear of 1g05. the Hindu and Musii
Soldiers in the British East India Companvs amy were made to change tnel d os
Code. Hindus were prohibited from wearing tilak ontheir foreheads and religious
clothing.
Nalin - Where on one hand these atrocities were taking place with Hindus, ther on
the other hand Muslims were told to trim their beards and moustaches. In addition
to this, General Sir John Cradock, the Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army,
1Ssued orders for them towear a hat, which was commonly worn by converted
Europeans and Christians in India, that had a leather lining.
Revati -These changes hurt the sentiments of both Hindu and Muslim soldiers
serving in the British army. Changing the soldiers' uniforms should have been done
with careful consideration, sensitivity and understanding.
Nalin - Due to this change, there was tremendous anger within the Indian soldiers,
and on 10th July 1806, Indian soldiers in the Madras region launched a large-scale
violent rebellion against the East India Company in Vellore.
The rebellion lasted for a whole day, during which the rebels seized control of
Vellore Fort and killed or wounded 200 British soldiers.
Revati-The rebellion was suppressed by the cavalry and cannons of the State.
Due to the violent crackdown, nearly 600 people were killed. Subsequently, 100
rebels were sentenced to death, and many others were formally court-martialled.
Nalin - This was the first rebellion that ignited the flame of independence among
Indians. This spark was so potent that it slowly grew and reached other states as
well.
Revati - Who can forget the years spent in fear of the COVID-19 pandemic spread
worldwide? During this time, India emerged as a country that developed the
COVID-19 vaccine, making efforts to save millions of people from this disease.
India not only vaccinated its own citizens but also extended help to many other
countries around the world by providing them with the vaccine.
