Each answer in this crossword variation has two clues leading to it, using different meanings of the word. The clues are
separated into Across and Down, but are otherwise ordered randomly.
When you find two Across or two Down clues that seem to have the same answer, add up their clue numbers to determine
the place in the grid at which the answer should be entered. For example, if the clue for 1-Across were “Metallic element”

The object of this solitaire challenge is to guess a word before making six incorrect guesses, as in a familiar
childhood game.
To begin, choose any letter of the alphabet that you think might appear in word I below. Suppose you pick E. Go to the
Letter Chart on the facing page and find the number listed in row E of column I (because you are working on word I).
The number is 13; you now look at box number 13 in the Position Chart (to the right of the Letter Chart) and find the
number 7. This means that the letter E occurs in the seventh position (and nowhere else) in word I. If a letter occurs
more than once in a word, the Position Chart will show all its locations.
If you find from the Position Chart that a letter appears in position 0, then the letter does not appear in the word. As
a penalty for an incorrect guess, write that letter in one the six boxes in the diagram beside the word blanks. If you fill
all the boxes (that is, make six incorrect guesses) before identifying the word, you’re knocked out.

The six puzzles on this page are solitaire versions of the classic paper-and-pencil game of Battleships. Each grid represents
a section of ocean in which a fleet is hiding. This fleet consists of one battleship (four grid cells in length), two cruisers
(three cells each), three destroyers (two cells each), and four submarines (one cell each). The ships may be oriented either
horizontally or vertically, and no two ships can occupy adjacent grid cells, not even diagonally. The digits along the grid’s
perimeter indicate the number of cells in the corresponding rows and columns that are occupied by vessels.
You’ll notice that some “shots” have been taken to start you off. These may show water (indicated by wavy lines), a
complete sub (a circle), the bow or stern of a ship (a rounded-off square), or a midsection of a battleship or cruiser (a

I can’t resist a good loop puzzle. Like Yajilin and Slitherlink, a Mid Loop puzzle
asks the solver to create a single loop in the grid. What makes these puzzles
fresh is the unique method in which clues are provided. There are no numbers (or
sheep, or wolves). Just dots. The constellationlike appearance of the grid appeals to the
piece of my brain that was overdeveloped by solving connect-the-dots puzzles as a child. Read

SOLVING HINTS
1. Determining the direction of a line segment through a dot is key to solving the puzzle. A dot placed in the center of a
cell represents the midpoint of a horizontal or vertical line, and it is often impossible to determine which direction is the
correct one without solving other clues first. But if these dots are in cells along the left or right edge of the grid, the line
segments must run vertically. Likewise, if these dots are in cells along the top or bottom edge of the grid, the line segments
must run horizontally.
2. Dots that are placed on a vertical grid line indicate the midpoint of a horizontal line. Dots that are on horizontal grid lines
indicate the midpoint of a vertical line.
3. Line segments will often be restricted by grid walls and neighboring dots. Remember, a restriction on one end of a line
segment will also affect the other end of the line segment.
4. When you have determined the length of a line segment, you will need to determine in which direction the line turns. In
these situations, look out for line paths that would create multiple isolated loops.

n this contest, solvers were presented with four cubic dice that had letters on their faces instead of pips. Each die had
six different letters, one letter per face, and no two dice had the same set of letters (none of which included a W or Z).
The letters on each die could be arranged to spell a six-letter word. We showed 12 views of the four dice: three views of
each die, with each letter on each die appearing in at least one view. The 12 views were shown in random order.
The four words that the dice spelled out could be paired up to form two two-word phrases—MOTHER TONGUE and
MOBILE NUMBER—which were the solution to this contest. Shown below are images of the dice unfolded; from these,

Each clue in a cryptic crossword has two parts: a definition of the answer and an indication of the answer’s literal makeup
via wordplay. Either half may come first; finding the dividing point between the two parts is the key to solving. On page
61, eight common methods by which hints are given via wordplay are described; any combination of these gimmicks
may be used.
Expect to see references to abbreviations (doctor for DR, Hawaii for HI, or university for U), chemical symbols (iron
for Fe), Roman numerals (five for V), and parts of words (end of year for R, head of cabbage for C, or heart of stone
for O). A clue with an exclamation point may be what’s called an & lit. clue, in which the two halves overlap, so the
whole clue is both a definition and a cryptic indication of the answer, as in Terribly angered! for ENRAGED (see

doesn’t go to the grocery store. He’s currently hungry as a BEAR, and doesn’t think a

mere PEAR will fill him up, so he throws a PAIR of rods in the truck, along with a PAIL
of worms, rubs some sunscreen over his PALE skin, and drives down to the local
tackle shop, where they’re having a SALE on fishing line. He swings by to pick up his
pal Joanne, and then the two begin to SAIL off the coast. She’s a good friend—not
only did she not BAIL on him for the fishing excursion, but she even paid his BAIL
last week after he got in a little trouble for throwing a pool BALL at someone’s head.
He knows the two of them will have a BALL today—there will be no need to BAWL.
Joanne isn’t the biggest fan of fishing, to be honest—she’d always rather BOWL. But
once they dive into a BOWL of nuts that Charlie packed, and watch some gorgeous 2
FOWL fly overhead, there’s no chance of her being in a FOUL mood. It’s a shame
though, she thinks, that the local manufacturing plant had to FOUL these beautiful
waters with chemical runoff. Have they no SOUL? Joanne’s reverie is interrupted when
Charlie gleefully announces that he caught a large SOLE. She’s reminded of the SOLE
reason they came out here today—to fill that HOLE in their bellies with a WHOLE meal
of delicious fish. If they stayed on the boat longer, they might catch a glimpse of a
WHALE, but when Charlie heads back to shore, Joanne doesn’t WAIL about it. Her
own tummy is beginning to grumble, and she doesn’t want to WAIT to eat.
