Each answer in this crossword variation has two clues leading to it, using different meanings of the word. The clues are
separated into Across and Down, but are otherwise ordered randomly.
When you find two Across or two Down clues that seem to have the same answer, add up their clue numbers to determine
the place in the grid at which the answer should be entered. For example, if the clue for 1-Across were “Metallic element”
and the clue for 17-Across read “Starring role,” the answer would be LEAD, which would go in 18-Across (1 + 17). Tags

The object of this solitaire challenge is to guess a word before making six incorrect guesses, as in a familiar
childhood game.
To begin, choose any letter of the alphabet that you think might appear in word I below. Suppose you pick E. Go to the
Letter Chart on the facing page and find the number listed in row E of column I (because you are working on word I).
The number is 97; you now look at box number 97 in the Position Chart (to the right of the Letter Chart) and find the
number 4. This means that the letter E occurs in the fourth position (and nowhere else) in word I. If a letter occurs
more than once in a word, the Position Chart will show all its locations.
If you find from the Position Chart that a letter appears in position 0, then the letter does not appear in the word. As
a penalty for an incorrect guess, write that letter in one the six boxes in the diagram beside the word blanks. If you fill
all the boxes (that is, make six incorrect guesses) before identifying the word, you’re knocked out.

The six puzzles on this page are solitaire versions of the classic paper-and-pencil game of Battleships. Each grid represents
a section of ocean in which a fleet is hiding. This fleet consists of one battleship (four grid cells in length), two cruisers
(three cells each), three destroyers (two cells each), and four submarines (one cell each). The ships may be oriented either
horizontally or vertically, and no two ships can occupy adjacent grid cells, not even diagonally. The digits along the grid’s
perimeter indicate the number of cells in the corresponding rows and columns that are occupied by vessels.
You’ll notice that some “shots” have been taken to start you off. These may show water (indicated by wavy lines), a
complete sub (a circle), the bow or stern of a ship (a rounded-off square), or a midsection of a battleship or cruiser (a

SOLVING HINTS
1. Start by looking for clues with the most restrictions. Most likely, these clues are
along a border or in adjacent cells. In the example below, the pairs of clues in the

fans. My experience in the puzzle world suggests that
the word enthusiasts outnumber those who prefer logic
puzzles. But if you look in the space shared by these

In their new book, Escape Room Logic Puzzles, Heaney
and Weiss set out to recreate the fun team experience of
an escape room.
When I received my copy of Escape Room Logic
Puzzles, I wondered how the authors would present
logic—possibly the least appreciated puzzle format for
an escape room—as the main ingredient of a puzzle
series, yet still engage a majority of solvers. Well, if
anyone can bring logic to the masses in an enjoyable

Each clue in a cryptic crossword has two parts: a definition of the answer and an indication of the answer’s literal makeup
via wordplay. Either half may come first; finding the dividing point between the two parts is the key to solving. On page
61, eight common methods by which hints are given via wordplay are described; any combination of these gimmicks
may be used.
Expect to see references to abbreviations (doctor for DR, Hawaii for HI, or university for U), chemical symbols (iron
for Fe), Roman numerals (five for V), and parts of words (end of year for R, head of cabbage for C, or heart of stone
for O). A clue with an exclamation point may be what’s called an & lit. clue, in which the two halves overlap, so the
whole clue is both a definition and a cryptic indication of the answer, as in Terribly angered! for ENRAGED (see

a longer word by using each bank letter at least once and reusing one or more of the letters as many times as
necessary). The banked word always appears in the definition portion of the clue. For example, MOTORIST might
be clued as “Tom’s trio plays Verdi,” with “Verdi” serving as a letter bank for “driver.” As a help, enumerations are
given for the word to be generated from the bank, not for the clue answer. Thus the example’s enumeration would

In this variety cryptic, words fit into the bowling alley in two ways. The answers to the numbered Row clues
are seven-letter words that cross the grid horizontally, beginning and ending in the shaded gutters. The Lane
clues are organized into five groups (A–E); the answers for each group fill one of the grid’s mostly unshaded
columns, starting at the top and ending in the shaded area behind the circled “pins.” Clues within each group
are in order, but the groups themselves are in no particular order. Each Lane answer (except the first in each
group) overlaps its predecessor by one or more letters; however, the wordplay portion of each Lane clue
disregards any letters already “knocked down” by the preceding answer. Thus, if the first two answers in a
lane were ALLEY and EYEBALL, the wordplay portion of the second clue would only yield the ”spare” letters
of its answer (EBALL). When the grid is completely filled, the letters in the pins (read from left to right and top

Words fit into this flower garden in two ways. The Rows stretch across the grid between the matching sets
of fence posts; each row contains two answers reading consecutively from left to right (except rows A and L,
which each contain one answer reading across the nine protruding spaces). The two answers in each Row
are clued in order, but the dividing point between them is for you to determine. The Blooms are six-letter words
or phrases that fill the colored hexagons, reading either clockwise or counterclockwise. Bloom clues are divided
