WRITING TASK 1:

Bar chart

The presented bar chart illustrates the income distribution of US households between
2007 and 2015.
The data shows that while the $50,000 to $99,999 income range remained relatively
constant, the lowest and highest income categories experienced notable changes.
It is evident that the majority of US households received an income of $100,000 or
more, while the $75,000 to $99,999 range was comparatively insignificant.
The figures pertaining to households earning between $50,000 and $99,999 remained
stable throughout, with 21 million households earning between $50,000 and $74,999 and
approximately 15 million households earning between $75,000 and $99,999. In contrast, the
number of households with incomes less than $49,999 showed slight growth over the years,
from 25 million in 2007 to almost 28 million in 2015.
However, the highest income group showed the most significant variation, as the
number of households earning above $100,000 surged from almost 30 million in 2007 to a
peak of 33 million in 2015, despite a dip in 2011 that recorded 27 million households.
Overall, the depicted bar chart portrays the US household income distribution
between 2007 and 2015, indicating that while moderate growth was observed in the lower-
income tier, the higher income groups experienced a sharp rise.
Maps

The given maps illustrate how Dubai has transformed over the past decades. When
comparing these two maps, it is evident that this area has definitely been modernized
significantly.
In both maps, the only structure which remains untouched is the clock tower located
in the middle of the roundabout.
There are several differences occurring to Dubai over the time. In the past, the area
was mainly covered in sand, and there was only a limited number of buildings at the sides of
the road. However, currently the map is relatively different; specifically, the area by the road
is full of skyscrapers and the road itself is heavily used by multitudinous vehicles. In
addition, trees have been planted on the edges of the roundabout, surrounding the clock
tower.
Overall, the area has become noticeably more developed and populated. Numerous
skyscrapers fill the roadside and it is no longer possible to see areas of sandy desert. Besides,
the clock tower is the only unchanged feature.
WRITING TASK 2:
Education – Discuss both views and give personal opinion
• In recent years, there has been a growing debate among university students regarding
whether they should focus solely on their main subjects or also engage in other
subjects. While some argue that it is important to dedicate all their time and attention
to studying for a qualification, others believe that learning about other subjects can be
equally valuable. This essay will discuss both views and provide an opinion on the
matter.
• On one hand, proponents of giving all their time and attention to studying for a
qualification argue that this approach allows students to develop an in-depth
knowledge and expertise in their chosen field. By dedicating themselves solely to
their main subjects, they can fully immerse themselves in the subject matter and gain
a comprehensive understanding of the concepts and theories. This undivided attention
can lead to better grades and increased chances of success in their future careers.
• On the other hand, there are those who believe that learning about other subjects can
be beneficial for university students. Having a diverse range of knowledge allows
individuals to have a broader perspective and a well-rounded education.
Interdisciplinary learning promotes critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and
creativity. For instance, a computer science student who also studies psychology can
apply psychological theories to better understand user behavior when designing
software applications. Furthermore, by studying other subjects, students can discover
new interests and potential career paths they may not have considered before.
• Personally, I believe that university students should strike a balance between their
main subjects and learning about other topics. While specializing in a particular field
is important, having knowledge in other subjects can provide a significant advantage
in today's dynamic and interconnected world. Employers often value individuals who
possess a range of skills and knowledge, as they can contribute to a variety of projects
and offer diverse perspectives. Additionally, exploring other subjects can enhance
personal growth and broaden students' horizons.
• In conclusion, while some argue for dedicating all their time and attention to studying
for a qualification, others believe that learning about other subjects can be equally
important. In my opinion, a balanced approach that combines both is the most
beneficial for university students. This allows them to become experts in their main
subjects while also gaining a broader range of skills and knowledge. Ultimately, this
will enhance their academic performance and employability in the future.

• Taking a gap year before starting university has become a popular option for many
students. While some people might think that it is a waste of time, I believe that it can
be a valuable experience that offers many benefits.
• Firstly, taking a gap year can help students to broaden their horizons and gain a deeper
understanding of other cultures. Traveling to different countries or even volunteering
overseas provides an opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds
and develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding. This can be especially
beneficial for young people who may have had limited exposure to different cultures.
• Secondly, a gap year can also be a time for personal growth and self-discovery. It
allows students to step back from the academic pressure of university and explore
their interests and passions. For example, some students may choose to work or intern
in a field they are considering studying, allowing them to gain valuable experience
and insight that can inform their future studies and career choices.
• Lastly, taking a gap year can also help to improve a student’s employability. Many
employers look favorably upon candidates who have taken a gap year, as it
demonstrates initiative, independence, and adaptability. It is also a chance for students
to gain practical skills and experience that can make them more competitive in the job
market.
• In conclusion, although taking a gap year is not a guaranteed pathway to success, I
believe that it can be a worthwhile choice for many students. It provides an
opportunity for personal growth, cultural immersion, and practical working
experience that can enhance a student’s university experience and future career
prospects.

Science and technology – opinion essay

• Science has played a significant role in improving human life by contributing to
advances in medicine, technology, and many other fields. It is widely believed that
science is primarily aimed to better our living conditions. In my opinion, I completely
agree with this statement as science's main purpose should be to create a better world
for people to live in.
• To begin with, medical science has always been integral in improving people's lives
by developing cures for diseases, preventative measures, and medical treatments.
Scientists have made remarkable advances in the fields of oncology, cardiology, and
many more specialities. Without medical science, diseases would continue to spread
unabated, causing mass outbreaks which could be fatal. Medical science has also
allowed us to increase life expectancy rates, resulting in the opportunity to spend
more valuable time with family and loved ones.
• Moreover, with a focus on science, advancements in technology have transformed
almost every aspect of human life. Everyday life is now made easier by technologies
such as mobile phones, computers and the internet. These developments have allowed
us to stay connected to the rest of the world, communicate with distant family
members, and carry out tasks with increased convenience. Furthermore, science has
resulted in better transportation, allowing us to connect further and grow as a global
society.
• However, some people might argue that there are other purposes and benefits of
science, which may not be directly related to improving people's lives. For example,
research and development in the space, scientific theory, and investigation of new
systems may not have direct benefits on people's lives. However, these areas of
science indirectly contribute to improving living standards, especially in the long run.
• In conclusion, science plays a crucial role in improving people's lives, especially in
medicine and technology. Therefore, I wholeheartedly agree that the most important
aim or goal of science should be to help and improve people's lives.
Environment – Opinion essay
The issue of environmental degradation has gained global prominence in recent times,
and governments along with individuals have made concerted efforts to raise awareness on
the subject. However, some people still believe that most individuals do not take
environmental issues seriously. In my opinion, I totally agree with this statement due to the
following reasons.
Firstly, most people are not conscious about the environment because they do not
adequate knowledge on the matter. Environmental deterioration is a complicated issue, and
without sufficient understanding, people cannot fully appreciate the urgency to protect the
environment. For example, people who do not understand the negative effects of plastic waste
may litter, contribute to pollution, and harm natural habitats without realizing it.
Furthermore, they are not mindful about environmental problems as they prioritize
other concerns over environmental protection. Many individuals have daily demands such as
food, shelter, and employment, which they consider more pressing than environmental
concerns. As a result, they may fail to see how degraded environment can affect their day-to-
day existence.
In addition, people are not concerned about this since they have a mentality that their
involvement would not have any significant impact. Instead, they believe that the
government, non-governmental organizations, or other interest groups should take the lead in
protecting the environment. Therefore, they may contribute little or nothing towards
environmental protection.
In conclusion, the majority of people are not actively engaged in protecting the
environment because of limited knowledge on the matter, prioritization of other concerns,
and a mentality that someone else should take responsibility. Thus, we should raise the
awareness and encourage more individuals to become active contributors to environmental
protection.
