Judges’ Note:
One look at this
abstract textured
background will
have you saying
‘Wow, wow, wow!’

“The inspiration for this layout came from a photo

of my friend’s little boy, Xander, which I stumbled
across on Facebook. It was just an everyday, happy
snap taken by a friend but when I zoomed in on
it, I saw something far more special. The original
photo was a landscape orientation; I cropped out
the sides, did a little editing, and wow, suddenly this
photo had real impact – I had to scrap it! My friends
and family are quite used to me scrapping photos
I come across on Facebook and have given me
carte blanche to scrap what I like, which I love! This
particular type of layout is, for me, all about being
creative, not recording memories, and is definitely
one of my favourite ways to be inspired.”

Happiness found

Materials: Paper – K&Company, Stampin’

Embellishments – D-lish Scraps flowers,

Workshop template, homemade pigments
(spinach, beetroot, tomato, coffee and
turmeric), leather, trim, plasterer’s mesh,
machine-stitching, Krylon gesso spray,
Faber-Castell Whipped Spackle.

“Being accustomed to using non-

conventional items in my scrapping, I really
wanted to push myself with this challenge.
I wanted to create a non-conventional
item I could use in a conventional way. I
decided to make my own colour pigments
by dehydrating various fruits and vegetables
and grinding them into powders. Once I had
them finely ground, I tested them with hot
and cold water, paints and other mediums,
making notes along the way. Once I was
finished road testing my pigment powders I
was able to select the ones that worked best
with my photo and then I essentially used
them as I would any other mixed media
product, including dying my paper doily with
the beetroot pigment.”

Judges’ Note:
Without a doubt, Alison’s use of
dehydrated foods as pigment
powders was the most creative
thinking we saw this year!

Judges’ Note: “A few years ago a small circle of close

balance here between media we each listed three qualities about each
and embellishments – just as
other. Ever since, I have wanted to create
she does with her layouts!
something titled ‘I am’ and record what each
of them had said about me. I didn’t know
whether it would be a canvas or a tag book
or who knows. So this challenge was the
perfect excuse to finally do that ‘something’.
The subject matter of my art journal led
me to create something soft and feminine.
I took inspiration from my favourite My
Mind’s Eye range for the colours and kept
my embellishing ‘pretty’. I have all the pages
inside my journal ready to go and look
forward to its return so I can finish it.”

Those eyes
BY FIONA PALTRDIGE, SA
Materials: Paper – Kaszazz watercolour, book; Punch – EK Success;
Stamp – Tim Holtz; Embellishments – 2Crafty chipboard, Tim Holtz film
strip, Kaisercraft die-cuts, buttons, thread, watercolours, gesso, marker,
Heidi Swapp Color Shine, Tinby Designs Metallic Melts.

“This layout was inspired completely by this captivating photo of

my boy. Every design idea I had, came directly from it. The colours,
the embellishments, the title and the design of the layout were all
chosen to complement it. As I do with most of my boy layouts,
I like to make them a bit grungy, which was why I chose a paint
drip affect and some crazy stitching around the photo to frame
it. The embellishments are also a bit grungy with torn paper and
corrugated cardboard adding height to the page.”

Judges’ Note:
Fiona has made great use of white
space in this layout for visual impact.

Your style
BY FIONA PALTRIDGE, SA
Materials: Paper – BoBunny, wrapping,
dress pattern; Embellishments – Kaszazz
letters and gems, Little Birdie flowers and
butterflies, Merci frames, Arbee jewels,
doily, teabag, teabag tag, postage stamps,
hessian, watercolours, gesso, Tim Holtz
Distress Ink, Ranger Dylusions ink spray.

“I often use non-papercraft items. I find they make a page more personal. I’m into up-
cycling most things but my favourite would have to be old book pages, sewing patterns and
corrugated cardboard from boxes. For this layout I wanted to create a recycled look to it,
so I used vintage colours: crimson, green and brown. I remember dyeing paper using a tea
bag at school to make our treasure maps look authentic. I’ve used it in many of my other
craft endeavours to stain lace, paper and flower embellishments but this is the first time
I’ve used it as a watercolour wash on a background. I was pleasantly surprised when it left
a deep colour that I could work with as my starting point. Adding some watercolour paint
and splats of ink created a rustic, vintage-looking background that now complemented my
vintage, non-conventional products I had chosen as my embellishments.”

Judges’ Note:
We love the grown-up
femininity of this layout –
it’s very striking.

Kaisercraft brads, modelling paste, marker,
Tim Holtz Distress Ink and Stain.

“I’ve always been a list maker. I tend to be a natural goal setter in my everyday life from making
a list of the jobs I need to complete in a day to mapping out my professional career based on
my work choices and study plan, but I’ve never written down my ‘fun things to do’, so I saw this
as an opportunity to make them visible. The background paper I used has a cork board look.
I thought this was just perfect for ‘pinning’ my bucket list to. The journalling for each item on
the list is simply written in my own hand which is messy, but that’s me. I’ve always wanted neat
handwriting like the stuff Heidi Swapp does with brush script. Maybe I should add that to my list
of things to achieve one of these days!”

Judges’ Note:
It was a great idea to use
the numbers to correlate
with the bucket list
journalling.

Fly

Materials: Quill art diary; Paper – Book; Stamps –
Kaszazz, Tim Holtz, Daniel Torrente; Embellishments
– Kaszazz and Prima Marketing Inc flowers, Tim Holtz
wings, chipboard, twine, wire, gesso, watercolours, Heidi
Swapp Color Shine, Ranger Dylusions ink spray.

Judges’ Note:
That image of the little girl and the
birds stamp look like they were
meant for each other! Great job
pairing them together, Fiona!

“Only recently have I dived into the

very addictive world of art journalling. I
procrastinated for many days before attempting
to decorate the cover of my art journal until I
worked out that, as it is with most art, there is no
wrong or right. Once I started, I found it flowed
quickly. The centre piece of my cover comes
from an old Little Golden Book. I used this as
my inspiration for the whole piece and felt that
the sentence from the book “Some birds fly far,
some fly so far away we cannot see how they
find their way home. For they fly hundreds of
miles through pathless sky,” was simply beautiful
and fitting of my own thoughts about my art. I
stamped some birds in flight and added a wing
to represent my own journey of artistic adventure
as I feel I am never really following a path, but
somehow I always find my way.”

Age: 34 (when did that happen?!)

Fact File Family: I’m married to a great guy, Matt, mama to three gorgeous girls who are
6 (Isabella), 4 (Charlotte) and 1 (Olivia). We have 2 fur babies (dogs).
Occupation: I’m a stay at home mother but I have degrees in Japanese studies,
marketing and primary teaching!
Scrappy style: It really varies, but lately I tend towards a mixed-media style. I
love big portions of white space but I also love huge amounts of glorious colour.
Other hobbies/interests: I’ve just learnt to crochet, and I love it. I try to spend
some time studying Japanese whenever I can. I’m also very interested in nutrition
and I’ve been spending a lot of time cultivating our new vegie garden!
Favourite techniques: Using Gelatos as paints, stencilling, paint splatters and
lots of layers of paper.
Fun fact: I lived in Japan for almost 2 years from 2001, and I still sometimes
have trouble remembering the English word for things. The Japanese word just
always seems to be in my brain first!

embossing paste, Faber-Castell Gelatos, Simon Says ink, Copic marker.

“For this layout, I started with my photo. The sweet blush of my daughter’s
cheeks, as well as her fuchsia onesie were the basis for my colour palette.
I wanted to create an interesting twist on a ‘sunburst’ pattern, so I used
Gelatos to create a water-coloured base layer, and then added a fun,
textural layer over each segment, using different embossing powders,
stencils, texture pastes and ink. I love this happy, sweet photo of my
baby and I think the rainbow bursting from behind her photo reflects her
personality perfectly!”
Judges’ Note:
This layout is so bright and happy,
of course we had to put it on our
cover – it’s amazing!

mulit-matte medium, Hero Arts ink, Tattered

“This layout was so fun! I was inspired by an unfinished knitting project, that
I knew would make the perfect non-conventional element. I chose papers
and embellishments in colours that would create a cold feeling to match my
photo. To add some fun texture and interest, I used the Tim Holtz Cracked
Glass stencil and embossing paste, as well as some paint swiped around the
page to mimic frost on the windows and cold wind blowing. I also added
drops of Stardust Stickles throughout the page to suggest icicles.”

clever to use a crocheted

“Instead of trying to find a way to make

journalling the focus on a typical layout
(where there is a photo to journal about),
I decided to create a layout where the
journalling acted as the background paper!
I chose a small photo and traced around it,
leaving a small amount of room for layers of
patterned paper. Next I wrote my journalling
(slowly!), filling up the entire page. I had left
a space for an embellishment cluster right
next to the photo, because I didn’t want to
Judges’ Note: draw the eye away from the journalling.
Wow, talk about journalling as
the focus! Linda has fulfilled I purposely chose a small, slightly darker
this brief to a tee – and on photo for this layout, so that it would act as
such a great topic! a support to the journaling, rather than the
other way around.”

Judges’ Note:
Hmm, when we think of texture,
metal charms is not one of the main
materials that come to mind, but
they’ve added so much texture to the
figure of the lady on the cover!

“I wanted to make a really

striking cover for my art journal
with lots of little details to look
at. I chose a Prima Marketing
Inc stamp as my main image,
and set to work creating a
collage of clock parts and
other metal embellishments. I
thought it would be interesting
to combine feminine colours
and images with hard metal
elements. I added some
stamping and doodling around
the cover, as well as stencils
and stickers to create word
‘bubbles’. The cherry blossom
at the top was my final element,
alongside the gems and pearls

Occupation: Optometrist but taking the longest maternity leave ever! I will go back

Scrappy style: Mostly clean and simple with lots of white space, but I do love

Other hobbies/interests: I crochet most nights in front of the TV, and I also love

Favourite techniques: I’m not a ‘technique-y’ scrapper but lately I’ve been
using my spray inks with stencils on my pages and using my Silhouette Cameo
to create embellishments.
Fun fact: I am obsessively tidy in my craft room (and everywhere else). Everything has its

Judges’’ Note:
The gold accents are a nice touch to this
layout with a mainly neutral colour palette.

“This photo of my son made me gasp when I first saw it on my computer screen. He is growing
up so fast and his face is changing in shape and expression. I realised then that my baby is gone
and I am so glad I have so many moments captured in photos. I usually scrap with small photos
so to use a 5in x 7in photo presented quite the challenge. Once I decided to tackle this larger
size photo as I would a grouping or grid of smaller photos, I felt a lot more comfortable and the
page came together easily. I had applied a warm filter to my black and white photo, but I wanted
a predominantly black and white page. The splash of wood grain in this paper collection and the
addition of gold accents helped to create warmth. I love using my Silhouette Cameo to create
titles and this title really popped once I applied gold embossing powder to it.”

Right now
BY LOUISE BEERENS, WA
Materials: Paper – American Crafts; Cardstock –
Neenah, Stampin’ Up!; Embellishments – Polly Scrap
Kits washi tape and wood veneer, American Crafts
transparency, Project Life card, Silhouette Cameo and
cut files, Studio Calico labels, clip and mesh from bag
of oranges, twine, machine-stitching, staples.

“I absolutely adore navel oranges and I eat two every

single day. As soon as I opened up this bag of oranges
I knew I wanted to use the bag as a background on a
page dedicated to my favourite winter fruit. The bag
was too small for a 12in x 12in page but perfect for
8.5in x 11in, and I really enjoyed creating in this size –
it’s been a while since I have and I must remember to
do it more often! My photo has a little bit of pink, blue
and yellow in the background, so I pulled out those
colours to choose the products to create my bright and
happy page. The hot pink hearts on the transparency
perfectly represent my love of oranges while still
allowing the background to show through. Oranges
remind me of sunshine so I added some extra interest
to my background by using an arrow cut file that is
similar to sun rays.”

Judges’ Note:
Everything about this layout is awesome – the bright
colour scheme, the machine-stitching, and the layering
of the mesh with the Silhouette cut file.

Crafts Thickers and Amy Tangerine
embellishments, Silhouette Cameo cut
file, twine, staples, machine-stitching.

“I must confess that this page was my second attempt at this task. I loved my first
page but even though I used a small photo and lots of journalling, the photo was still
the focus of the page every time I looked at it. I decided to change my approach and
design my page in my usual style but as if the journalling was the photo and the photo
was an embellishment. I love to layer strips of paper under my photos and cluster
embellishments around my photos. For this page, I did just that to my journalling
block instead. I created a small tag from my photo and added it to a cluster of other
embellishments and I love the result. My journalling describes all the little things that
make me happy right now so I chose products with bright happy colours. Since the page
was about me I relished the rare opportunity to use pink and some flowers too.”

Judges’ Note:
How cool is that photo in a tag
shape? Great use of a cut file.

Make art everyday

BY LOUISE BEERENS, WA
Materials: Paper – Canson watercolour, Glitz Design;
Cardstock – Neenah; Stamp – Date; Embellishments
– Stampin’ Up! doilies, Studio Calico label, Silhouette
Cameo, iHeartStudio cut files, machine-stitching, Heidi
Swapp Color Shine, Tim Holtz Distress Ink.

“My art journal is constructed of watercolour paper

pages and will be used for experimenting with all kinds
of watercolours. Its small size means I can take it with
me to play on the go. I have a large art journal that I
love to get messy in but my usual art-journalling style is
very, very different to my scrapbooking style. So when
I was faced with the task of creating an art journal
cover that reflects my scrapbooking style I figured my
best bet was to treat my cover like a mini-scrap page.
I love to use curled messy paper layers machine-
stitched down, clusters of embellishments around my
focal point and splatters of ink. You will also almost
always find the date stamped on my scrap layouts.
Since this art journal will be used for watercolouring,
I used Distress Inks to watercolour my title and
embellishments.”

Judges’ Note:
Those folds that do not run parallel
are a simple yet striking way to
add layers and dimension to this
gorgeous journal cover.

in my work. I love the earthy colours of
nature and natural elements. This layout
represents my love for my daughter and
nature. I have been creating more and
more work with actual pieces from nature
like sticks and grasses. The hanging
charms have fine gravel embedded in
the resin. This layout was inspired by a
canvas that I had created using similar
techniques. Birds feature heavily in my
work too, but generally never in a bird
cage or if they are the door will always be
open. I think the birds represent finding
freedom to me. The biggest challenge with
this layout was getting the gravel and resin
to stay in the charm without leaking out
from underneath or over the top. Lots of
patience was needed with that technique.”

“I love art journals and have created a few in the last year, and most of them have a heart and soul
theme representing the journey that I have been on and am still on. This is an old hardcover book with
a hole cut out of the centre where I set the metal frame. I added a resin frame and beads with a heart
charm in the box before filling it with resin. There are so many layers on this cover and I love the end
result. One of the last layers I added was with Crackle Accents. I tipped the book up one way then the
other to create even more interesting crackle drips. A lot of the pages on the inside were glued together
to the depth of the box. I then used old rusty screws from hubbie’s shed to screw it on.”

Scrappy style: I don’t think I really have a style as such but do love all things messy,

of media so I needed something that would hold up to the punishment I was about to
give it. I love the idea of using things that are not traditionally of a scrappy nature so I
raided the back shed for some inspiration! I wanted to create a background to suit the
beachy feel of the photo so decided to paint it from scratch. For the texture I used some
plasterer’s joint compound (yes, from the shed). This is really thick, heavy and creamy.
I then used an embossing plate to stamp into it to create a light textured pattern. I also
used wet newspaper across the center to build up some print layers and the paint did
the rest! I had a bundle of fun with this one.”

was actually perfect for this challenge. I wanted to keep the page like my
daughter, colourful but grunge. Wearing mostly black with Dr Martens
boots, she is no girly girl but her personality shines bright and is pretty
loud, so I wanted to create the impression of texture without the bulk. I
achieved this by layering up my background colours and patterns. To
keep the focus on the photo I made a mat with old rub-ons. My title
is done with dimensional glitter paint stippled through a stencil, then
highlighted in parts with a white pen. It got the thumbs up from Ruby!”

“This was my favourite of the four tasks;

it really got me thinking outside the box.
I particularly love the background. I have
a box full of cardstock that has been used
to clean up brushes, stencils, and my
messy mat. I used one with a grey wash
and printed the weave on top by painting
black a piece of woven handmade paper
and using it as a stamp – a really cool
effect. The gyprock tape was scrounged
from my husband’s shed and is a
fabulous feature on a boy page. As it’s
white it can be easily coloured with any
permanent ink/pen. I also love the way
the 35mm film looks after dry-embossing
and inking it. I have a bit of this stuff lying
around since switching to digital so it’s
sure to get another look-in. The Hazel

creating personalised embellishments to

inventive boy’s personality.”

Both clusters on this journal cover
have been put together perfectly –
there are several elements in them
but they are not over the top.
Just like many of you, Amber Crowell is a busy wife, mother, friend, daughter, co-worker, neighbour, volunteer....and scrapbooker! Four
years ago, instead of scrapbooking as a creative outlet, it started to become just another job on her to-do list that she didn’t have time for.

Amber started storing her printed photos in divided 4in x 6in page protectors in a 12in x 12in album – just so her children could
view them before she scrapbooked them. The first time her family looked through this ‘album’ together, they laughed and reminisced.
That’s when she realised what her hobby was all about. Amber loved the concept of simply inserting photos into divided page
protectors, along with decorative scrapbook elements, for quick and easy scrapbooking and instant gratification. Instead of
cutting, cropping, embellishing and creating her own handmade elements from scratch, she wanted a product that featured stylish,
pre-designed element pieces in just the right sizes (to fit those page protector pockets perfectly!).

And that is how the Simple Stories concept was born... Amber and her team are thrilled to share their solution with other
scrapbookers just like you! A system that allows you to balance your hobby with your busy life and products that
will help you share your memories in a simple, yet beautiful, way!

the water in general. To do this, I incorporated some basic swimming
essentials – his club cap, the strap off an old pair of goggles and
elements from the tag of his favourite brand of training togs, ‘Funky
Trunks’. I especially wanted to include the safety instructions because they
are fun and quirky, just like Lachlan’s personality. Finally, I used some
bubble wrap as the background to the layout to mimic the bubbles of

paint to match the splashes and water in the photo, and adhered it to a
sheet of thick acetate for stability.”

a large journalling block. I chose to
handwrite the journalling as I felt this
was more personal and reminded me
of all the handwritten letters I received
from Grandma as a child. It was my
way of paying tribute to her memory.”

Judges’ Note:
The composition of this
layout is spot on – the way
the journalling cards and
photos correlate is great.

VersaMagic ink, STAEDTLER pen.

Judges’ Note:
Sarah has really stuck to her scrapbooking
style on this cover – between the colours
and embellishments used, we could tell
immediately that it was hers.

“The title of my art journal sums my

scrapbooking style up perfectly –
simple and relatively clean. Whenever
I look through my albums, the layouts
I am more drawn to are the ones with
a simple design where my photos are
the highlight. I wanted my journal to
reflect that – it is the simple pleasures
that bring me the most joy in life.

I wanted this journal cover to highlight

the things I love most about this craft
– layers of patterned paper, clusters
of embellishments and elements that
appear on most of my layout – brown
ink, enamel dots, wood veneers and
splatters of mist – all while staying
true to my love of simplicity.”
Two Green Zebras/Tilda

Two Green Zebras is the culmination of Chris Roche’s 20 years of experience in the craft and textile industries.
In 2012, Two Green Zebras began offering crafters in Australia and New Zealand a range of boutique brands
from around the world. One of the most popular of these brands is Tilda.

Tilda was founded by Norwegian designer Tone Finnanger in 1999, and is known for its whimsical, romantic ranges of fabrics,
papercraft products, notions and giftware. Tone describes life in Tilda’s world as perfectly imperfect – like a ballgown worn with wellies.
It’s this combination of romantic chic and quirky touches that has made Tilda such a hit with crafters. Tilda collections tells their
own story while co-ordinating beautifully with each other, offering versatility and limitless creative options.

The Tilda range includes fabrics, papers, embellishments, notions, doll kits, books of gorgeous projects and more!

Believe
BY TRACEY FOWLER, WA
Materials: Paper – MajaDesign, Prima Marketing Inc; Cardstock –
The Scrapbook Store chipboard; Stamp – Tim Holtz; Embellishments
– Prima Marketing Inc flowers, resin, tags, crochet icon, stencil and
Color Bloom, Manor House Creations flowers and title, Tim Holtz
arrows and Distress Ink, Scrapmatts chipboard, washi tape, gesso,
glass glitter, Stampendous aged embossing enamel.

Judges’ Note:
The rough dabs of gesso around the edges
of the photo are a nice touch to make the
photo fit the vintage look of the layout.

“Nothing gives me more pleasure than scrapping my boys, so the

hardest bit of this challenge was choosing a photo to scrap! Like most
of us, my boys are the reason I scrap and I base my layouts around the
photo. I recently discovered clear gesso, which creates a fabulous base to
start your layout on. By painting your background paper with clear gesso
you can wipe off excess colour that you have sprayed. Another technique
that I love to do is heat-emboss chipboard, as I have done with the
Scrapmatts String Circles. By using the Aged Embossing Enamel, it has
given the string circles a rustic look.”

“This was a fun challenge and had me looking around the house and Judges’ Note:
seeing everything in a different light. I chose to use some pencils (which Tracey chose great papers, stencils
we have hundreds of) because my niece in the photo is always drawing and materials to create a romantic
collage background.
beautiful pictures for us. I also have used muslin/gauze from my medical
kit which adds texture and softness to the background and some postage
stamps from letters received. I am not sure why I have never thought
of using the postage stamps before especially since there are heaps of
postage mark stamps in the market, and I have plenty of them among
my collection.”

Judges’ Note:
The half of the page where the
journalling is placed is barely
embellished so that the viewer
will focus on the words – just as
the task required!

“I found this layout very challenging, as I often only do small amounts of journalling on my layouts, mainly
because when I have finished creating my layout I have not left a lot of space on the page to add journalling.
It was a great reminder to actually create space on my layouts to add it. I got my inspiration to write my
journalling in a semi-circle from the clocks that I have used on the layout. I also like to use scrap words
on my pages – they don’t tell the full story behind the photo, but they express the feelings behind it.”
