Brightening those Rainy Day Blues
By: Mikayla Ickes

We’ve all been there – a gloomy Saturday, bored kids, a muddy yard and finished chores. What
can you possible do? Before you give in and let them sit on the couch all day decide to get
crafty!

At Crayola, we value your child’s creativity just as much as you do, so we’ve put together a
guide to help brighten those rainy day blues and get them gluing instead of being glued to the
television. This provides a perfect opportunity to get the whole family involved, and most of the
supplies needed you may already have on hand.

Spread Some Kindness

One of our favorite crafts, our painted Kindness Rocks,
help to brighten everyone’s day. You will need some
flatter rocks, paint, a paint brush and a permanent
marker. Using the paint and brush, create your desired
design on the rocks using fun colors. After it dries for
about 1-2 hours, use the permanent marker and write
an encouraging message or a kind word. Encourage
your child to think of someone they might want to give
this to and ask them what word or phrase describes
them.

Celebrate in a Colorful Way

Have a birthday or a special event coming up? Create your
own card! To make our Candle Birthday Card you will need
paint, cardstock, pens and scrap cardboard. Start by
folding the cardstock in half to create a card shape and
then pour small dollops of different colored paint side by
side on the card. Using the scrap cardboard, lightly press it
against the paint and drag it upward to create some
colorful streaks. Let it dry for 1-2 hours and then finish by
drawing some candles or a design that fits the occasion.

Consider making the day even brighter with some colorful snacks, such as rainbow goldfish or
different colored fruit slices.

At the end of the day, put your work on display! Construct your own household art gallery by
taping up your artwork or presenting it as the centerpiece at the dinner table. You can even
make display tags with your name, the title of the projects and what materials were used. As
your family admires your child’s creation, encourage them to explain what they made and how
they made it.
