The History of Sunnydale, California

Prehistory - Demons are the dominant species on Earth. Evidence of this era is scarce because of the way many demons
decompose upon death, and the few ancient prehistoric remains that have been found are usually attributed to a new
dinosaur species.
Welcome To The Hellmouth
Giles says the first part in Welcome to the Hellmouth. The misidentification of demons as dinosaurs was made by a
scientist named Mr. With in Graduation, Part 1. It is reasonable to assume that other such misidentifications have
happened more than once
Neolithic Era - A Gathering of Shamans, the beginning of what would become the Watcher's Council, perform a
powerful incantation that banishes the demons from Earth. The banishment is not complete however. A new form of
demon-human hybrid remains, the vampire. To fight these creatures, the First Slayer is called. There are also places on
Earth where the barrier between our world and the demon dimensions are weak, these are known as Hellmouths. These
are places of mystical convergence where things like magic and dimensional travel are easier.
The coastal valley that will one day be known as Sunnydale is located on such a Hellmouth.
It is around this time that the prehistoric Mother Bezoar buries itself underneath the Hellmouth.
The Harvest , The Prodigal, Bad Eggs, Primeval, and Restless
<The actual method by which the demons were driven from Earth and the First Slayer were called are never spelled out
in the show, but Joss Whedon wrote a reasonable version for the Fray comic. Since that version doesn't contradict
anything from the show, there is no reason not to believe that it is more or less true.>
3000 BCE - The beginnings of the Chumash culture on the Californian Central Coast. The Chumash people thrive on
the Central Coast and name the area around what will one day be Sunnydale "Alpinche", the place of acorns. It is only
later that the Chumash will discover a cursed spot in this fertile valley.
-Historical Event
<The Chumash name Alpinche applied to the whole Central Coast of California, near Santa Barbara. This brings up an
interesting point, namely where is Sunnydale actually located? We know that It is in the part of the Central Coast that
was part of Chumash territory from Pangs. we know that it is in the 805 area code because of the Magic Box ad in the
yellow pages in Shadow. The next page in the phone book lists massage services in the 310 Malibu area code, so it has
to be in the southern part of the 805 area code. It is about two hours away from Los Angeles, or at least the nearest
Nieman-Marcus, according to Buffy in Welcome to the Hellmouth. It is far enough away from Oxnard that Xander
could get stranded in that town when his car dies, as he recounts in The Freshmen. All of this points to Sunnydale being
somewhere in the vicinity of Santa Barbara. Plus there is the fact that Joss Whedon said it was somewhere around
Santa Barbara>

900 - A severe drought strikes the Chumash people which causes massive crop failure and starvation. Because of the
scarcity of food, violent outbreaks lead to intertribal wars. The shamans blame this event on the proximity of the
Hellmouth.

<Blaming such an event on the Hellmouth seems reasonable>

1100 - A second period of drought and war is once more blamed on the Hellmouth.

1400s - Vampiric dueling cult known as El Eliminati roams Europe. In later centuries, their numbers will dwindle and
the few remaining Eliminati will become the acolytes of the demon Balthazar.

1542 - First contact between the Chumash and Europeans, when the three sailing ships of Juan Rodr\'92guez Cabrilla
are met at sea by Chumash tomols-Oceangoing canoes made from wooden planks). The Chumash give the Spanish
explorerss a feast. The Spanish give the Chumash some glass beads and Cabrilla claims their land in the name of King
Charles I of Spain.

1602 - Sebastian Vizcaino follows Cabrilla's route to a place that he names for Saint Barbara. He also hears tales from
the Chumash about a cursed spot where creatures from the World Below can enter the World of Man. Vizcaino names
this area Boca Del Infierno, the Mouth of Hell. This is the first modern usage of the term Hellmouth.

 <Vizcaino spent a little more time here than Cabrilla, so it makes sense to assume that he might have been the first one
to hear about the Hellmouth and give it the name Boca Del Infierno>

1609- The Master visits a dying prostitute in Virginia Colony. He turns her into a vampire and names her Darla, the
name she will use for the next four centuries. This is the Master's first time in the New World, it is possible that he is
searching for the Hellmouth even then-Though it will be over three hundred years before he sets foot upon the
Hellmouth).
-From the Angel episode Darla, the continuation of the episode Fool For Love
<Whether or not the Master was also searching for the Hellmouth is up to the Director to decide for herself>

It is around this time that a virtuous knight prevents the demon Acathla from opening a vortex between Earth and one
of the demon dimensions. Before Acathla can draw a breath, it is stabbed through the heart and turns to stone. The
knight buries the stone remnants where he feels no will look, in the wilderness of Alta California. That the spot he
chooses just happens to be near Boca Del Infierno is one of those mystical coincidences that seem to happen around a
Hellmouth.
-Becoming, Part 1
<This is the time that Spanish began their extermination of the Aztecs and colonization of Mexico. This is about the
earliest that a European knight would know that there was a California wilderness in which to bury Acathla. This
implies that the knight in question was a Spanish knight, which is supported by the fact that sword stuck in Acathla's
chest looks like Renaissance Toledo-work. One possible scenario is that "Acathla" is a Spanish approximation of an
Aztec word. The battle between the knight and Acathla took place in Mexico, and after the demon was defeated the
knight chose the unsettled wilds of Alta California as the place neither demon nor man would want to look. For added
conspiratory fun, you could even have the Jesuits somehow involved, maybe they somehow convinced the knight to
bury Acathla near the Hellmouth without telling the knight the true nature of the location. Why they would do
something like that is up to the Cast to discover for themselves>

1697- Jesuit Missionaries arrive in Baja California with a royal charter.

-Historic Event

1767- The Jesuits are expelled from the Baja California and the Franciscans, under the leadership of Father-President
Jun-pero Serra, are charged with expanding the mission north into Alta California.
-Historic Event

1769- Captain Gaspar de Portol\'87 commands a troop of Spanish soldiers who travel through out the Central Coast of
California. Some soldiers perish at Boca Del Infierno, but this is explained away as an attack by wild animals or
Indians.

<Captain Gaspar de Portol\'87's exploration of the Central Coast is a matter of historic record. Demons eating Spanish
soldiers is just a bit of creative extrapolation to add to Sunnydale's bloody history

1782- Felipe de Neve, the governor of New Spain, orders that a presidio-fort) be built in the area before any missions
are constructed.
-Historic Event

Dec, 1786 - The founding of the Mission Santa B\'87rbara Virgen y M\'87rtir. The Santa Barbara Mission is the largest
settlement near Boca Del Infierno.
-Historic Event

1790s - It is around this time that a mission is built in what the Franciscans optimistically name Valle Del Sol-Which
translates more or less as "Sunnydale"). The area develops a reputation for having a healthy climate and invalids are
sent there for healing. The mission is also about five miles away from the actual Boca Del Infierno.
<Complete conjecture, but the date makes sense given what is known about the spread of missions in the Central
Coast. The mission is referred to as the Sunnydale Mission in Pangs. The name had to come from somewhere, and it
makes more sense that Franciscan monks would describe the general area as a Sunny Valley instead of a Mouth of
Hell, for the same reason that Vikings called the large island to the northeast of Canada "Greenland" instead of
"Bleakfrozenhorribleland". The location is based on the fact that the Sunnydale Mission was buried underneath UC
Sunnydale, which is five miles from Sunnydale High School and the Hellmouth according to Willow in The Freshman>

It is also around this time that the Gem of Amara comes to Valle Del Sol.

<The date of the Gem of Amara's arrival to Sunnydale is never given, but based on the items that were buried with the
mystic item and the above date for the first Europeans living in Sunnydale, this seems reasonable enough as the date
the Gem came to Sunnydale>

1801 - European diseases begin to take their toll on the Chumash people. One of the Chumash shamans has a vision
that says all of the Chumash who were baptized by the Spanish would die. She said the only way to prevent death was
to undergo a ritual to cancel out the baptism.

1811 - Earliest known schools in Alta California.

1812 - A massive earthquake affects a hundred mile long area of he Central Coast. Mission La P\'9crisma is reduced to
rubble, the Boca Del Infierno Mission sinks beneath the ground, a nearby crypt that contains the Gem of Amara is
buried and lost, and severe damage is suffered in Mission Santa B\'87rbara and the nearby Presidio. A tsunami is even
reported in the area by the smuggling ship Charon.

<The date given for the sinking of the Sunnydale Mission in Pangs coincides with a historical earthquake that caused
the damage listed above>

1821 - Mexico declares its independence from Spain. Shortly after this event, the missions of California undergo
secularization. The Franciscans are removed and secular priests continue the process of converting the Chumash.
Church lands are turned over to private owners.
It is around this time that Balthazar and El Eliminati come to Boca Del Infierno.

<The date for El Eliminati's arrival is conjecture, but it makes sense that the Spanish sect of vampires would arrive in
Sunnydale around this time. The mission is gone and California is now a wild territory instead of a colony of Spain.
That sort of wild danger probably appealed to the dueling cult>

1824 - The Chumash Rebellion. Throughout the Central Coast, Chumash rebel against the Spanish. This is largely
unsuccessful. The Chumash are defeated, warriors are executed are imprisoned, and in the following decades diseases
like malaria and smallpox vi rtually wipe out the Chumash. It is around this time that the great warrior Hus becomes a
spirit of vengeance attached to the buried Sunnydale Mission.

1846-1848 The Mexican-American War which among other things, results in Alta California becoming part of the
United States.

1850 - California becomes the 31st State. American Settlers take over land that previously belonged to the Californios-
Spanish Settlers) and the Indians-Including what is left of the Chumash).

It is also rumored that a ghost town sprung up around Boca Del Infierno in the aftermath of the California Gold Rush.
This town became a haven for vampires until most were killed by the Slayer of that time.
<This is from the story "The Glittering World" by David Fury, which appeared in Tales of the Slayers. While it isn't
canonical, it doesn't contradict anything and it was written by a Writer/Producer/Director of the show>

1899 - Richard Wilkins arrives in the area of Boca Del Infierno and defeats Balthazar by taking the demon's amulet,
which had become the source of demon's strength and power. Balthazar becomes weak and crippled after this and the
amulet falls into the possession of a wealthy landowner named Gleaves, who eventually has the amulet buried with
him. Balthazar and El Eliminati go into hiding and Wilkins strikes deals with a variety of powerful demons. In
exchange for giving the demons a place where they can feed, Wilkins will be granted power and a form of immortality.
He will not age for a hundred years, and at the end of that time he will achieve Ascension. The town of Sunnydale,
California is founded as the required place for demons to feed.

1900 - Josephus du Lac and the sect he founded is excommunicated by the Vatican. Du Lac settles in the town of
Sunnydale and continues his research into the mystical.
-What's My Line. Part 1

1903 - Mayor Richard Wilkins marries his sweetheart Edna Mae. The relationship ends in bitterness as End Mae grows
to resent the Mayor's continued youth while she still grows older.

1920s - A gothic revival church is built over the location of the Hellmouth.
<The Master's church, the one built directly over the Hellmouth, from what we see of it is straight gothic in style and
probably Catholic. There are gothic revival buildings in San Francisco from the 1850s and 60s, and again in the 1920s.
Since the town of Sunnydale didn't exist until 1899, the 1920s seem like a reasonable time for the church to have been
built>

1937 - The Master and the Order of Aurelius come to Sunnydale with the intent of opening the Hellmouth. After a the
town is plagued by a series of mysterious murders-Involving neck wounds and blood loss), Sunnydale is hit by a
localized earthquake. The main effect of this tremor is that the previously mentioned church sinks below the ground
and the Master is trapped within the confines of the subterranean house of worship by a mystical barrier.
-Welcome to the Hellmouth, The Harvest
<The fact that a powerful vampire like the Master ended up trapped underground for sixty years is odd until you
remember who is in charge of Sunnydale. A mobile Master with an opened Hellmouth would interfere with the Mayor's
plans for ascension. It is possible that the Mayor himself, or at the very least one of his demon masters on his behalf,
caused the earthquake in the first place>

1947 - The Delta Zeta Kappa fraternity of Crestwood College-The first college in Sunnydale) devote themselves to the
demon Machida. By sacrificing young women once a year, the Zeta Kappas are giving material success by the snake
demon.

1949 to 1960 - The Lowell Home for Children is run by Genevieve Holt. The torment and abuse perpetrated on the
children by her cause vast amounts of negative energy to build up and lie dormant until the proper catalyst can be found
to release it.
-Where The Wild Things Are

1955 - Sunnydale High School student Jim Stanley kills Grace Newman, one of his teachers, on the night of the Sadie
Hawkins dance.
-I Only Have Eyes For You

1957 - Ted Buchanon marries his first wife. He develops a terminal illness and his wife leaves him. This leads to Ted
building a robotic version of himself who kidnaps his exwife and locks her in a basement dwelling until she dies. In the
following decades, three more woman will be killed in a similar manner until the robot Ted is finally destroyed in 1997.

1976 - Sunnydale High wins the tri-county cheerleading championship under the leadership of head cheerleader
Catherine the Great-Who will later become Catherine Madison, Amy's mother). It is unkown whether or not she was a
practicing witch at the time.

 1982 - UC Sunnydale's Psi Theta fraternity loses its charter. The vampire Sunday uses the abandoned frat house as a
base from which to prey on college students-Mainly freshmen whose disappearances will be attributed Running Away
From College Stress instead of Being Bitten By Vampires).
-The Freshmen
<The disappearances among freshmen at UC Sunnydale date back to this time, but it isn't clear when Sunday started
using the Psi Theta house as her nest. It is possible that Sunday was allowed squatter's rights at the old frat house after
striking some kind of a bargain with Mayor. Old Wilkins could be awfully accommodating to vampires as long as they
played by his rules>

1983 - Sunnydale High wins a State Championship. This is significant because it never happens again.

<Principal Snyder never says exactly what in what sport Sunnydale won the State Championship. It might have been
swimming, or it might have been football or basketball. Snyder didn't seem to favor any particular Sunnydale sports
team, he just wanted them to win something>

1994 - It is about this time that Amy Madison's father leaves her mother Catherine. The former Cheerleader puts
herself through cosmetology school and becomes obsessive about Amy's weight-Which is why Amy has to sneak over
to Willow's house to eat brownie}
s. Much like Willow has to sneak over to Xander's house to watch a Charlie Brown Christmas). This is just one part of
a long complicated chain of events that will eventually lead to Willow become an incredibly powerful witch.

1995 - Sunnydale High's Daryl Epps makes All-City by running 185 yards, scoring 4 touchdowns, and is voted Most
Valuable Player in a game against Westbury.

1996- Cadillax Research and Development shuts down, numerous Sunnydale residents are laid off work.
-I Robot, You Jane
Jan, 1997 - The Slayer, Buffy Summers, moves to Sunnydale from Los Angeles. She meets her Watcher, Rupert Giles,
and her new best friends Willow and Xander. One of the first things Buffy does as Slayer is to prevent the Master's rise
by interrupting the Harvest. Later that month it is discovered that Catherine Madison has switched bodies with her
daughter Amy through the Black Arts. Amy is returned to her own body and the Catherine madison is trapped inside
her 1976 Cheerleading trophy.
-Welcome To The Hellmouth, The Harvest, The Witch
<The two passages quoted for the date of the Harvest are "And like a plague of boils, the race of man covered the
Earth. But on the third day of the newest light would come the Harvest. And the blood of men will flow as wine. When
the Master will walk among them once more!The Earth will belong to the old ones. And Hell itself will come to town."
quoted by Luke and "For they will gather and be gathered. From the Vessel pours life. On the night of the crescent
moon, the first past the solstice it will come." read by Giles. It is during the school year, so the solstice in question
would have to be the winter solstice or December 22. The events take place obviously after winter break, so January 2
at the earliest. Cordelia says that they are at the Bronze on a Friday night. The closest Friday that also occurred on a
Crescent Moon in 1997 was January 10, so that would be the night of the Harvest. In the next episode, Buffy says that
it has been over a week since she fought any vampires. This puts the events of The Witch in the latter part of January
based on the date of the Harvest and Buffy's last vampire encounter. And you probably thought we were just making
these dates up, didn't you?>

Feb, 1997 - A recently killed young by named Collin arises as the Anointed One, who will lead the Slayer into hell
according to an ancient prophecy.
-Never Kill A Boy On The First Date

March, 1997 - Principle Flutie killed by four students possessed by Hyena Spirits-Fortunately Xander was not involved
with that particular incident). The attack is blamed on wild dogs.
-The Pack

May, 1997 - The new principal, Snyder, sets the antagonistic tone for his administrative career by forcing Giles to
supervise the Sunnydale High talent show and making Buffy, Willow, and Xander participate in it. Unknown to the
Scoobies, Snyder was appointed as principal by Mayor Wilkins to make sure that the more unusual and occult
calamities that take place over the Hellmouth do not become public knowledge.
After a month of manifested nightmares and invisible girls, the Master prepares to finally escape his tomb. In
accordance with a prophetic passage from The Pergamum Codex, the Slayer dies and her blood allows the Master to
escape. What the Pergamum Codex neglects to mention is that Xander performs CPR on Buffy and revives her, and
then the not-quite-so-dead Slayer precedes to dust the Master.

June, 1997 - Giles, Willow, and Xander ritualistically bury the master's bones in consecrated ground after Buffy leaves
to spend the summer with her father in Los Angeles.
-When She Was Bad

Sep, 1997 - As a new school year starts, the Anointed One has his minions dig up the Master's bones in an attempt to
resurrect the ancient vampire. Buffy prevents the ritual from being performed, kills the minions, and smashes the
master's skeleton into non-ressurectable powder.
This is also the month that deceased Sunnydale High football hero Daryl Epps suffered through a brief Frankenstein's
Monster type existence.
The highlight of the month is the Night of Saint Vigius. The Anointed One plans to kill the Slayer on this unholy night,
but the recently arrived Spike promises to do it instead. Spike has come to Sunnydale with his lover Drusilla in hopes
that the Hellmouth will be able to cure her from injuries suffered at the hands of a mob in Prague. Spike decides he
can't wait until St. Vigius and attacks the Slayer early. The plan doesn't work, the Slayer lives, the Anointed One gets
upset, and Spike throws the Anointed One into a cage and hauls it up into the sunlight where little Collin becomes a
cloud of dust.
-When She Was Bad, Some Assembly Required, School Hard

Oct, 1997 - Members of the Delta Zeta Kappa fraternity are convicted of murder thanks to the efforts of Buffy
Summers. The material wealth of past Zeta Kappas vanish due to the demise of their patron demon Machida.
At the end of the month, the Scoobies start their tradition of Bad Halloween's when a large portion of Sunnydale's
youth are turned into their costumes-Thanks to the efforts of Ethan Rayne).
-Reptile Boy, Halloween
<Tom says, "And on the tenth day of the tenth month he shall be enhungered. And we shall feed him", so means
October 10 for Reptile Boy. Halloween takes place at Halloween, so October 31 is a safe bet for the date of that
episode>

Nov, 1997 - Buffy's old crush Billy Fordham heads the Sunset Club-A group of vampire wannabes) and strikes a deal
with Spike to become a vampire. Ford does this because of a terminal illness, but ironically he dies a lot sooner as a
vampire then he would have as a cancer patient.
After some revelations about the Mark of Eyghon and the shady past of Giles, the month ends with the Order of
Teraka coming to Sunnydale at Spike's request to kill the Slayer as he finds the Du Lac Cross-A tool that will help
decipher an archaic Latin book with the secret for Drusilla's cure). It is also around this time that the Slayer Kendra-
Called during Buffy's brief stint as a dead person) arrives in Sunnydale. Violence ensues that ends with the Order of
Teraka assassins being killed, Buffy and Kendra saving Angel, Spike becoming seriously injured, and Drusilla getting
her old strength back.
-Lie To Me, dark Ages, What's My Line Parts 1 & 2
<In What's My Line, Spike tells Drusilla, " Now all we need's the full moon tonight, and he will die, and you will be
fully restored." The Full Moons that occurred after Halloween 1998 were November 4 and December 3. It is possible
that the first four days of November were incredibly busy for the Scoobies, but far more likely that all of these events
took place during the entire month of November, up until the Restoration ceremony that took place on December 3>

Dec, 1997 - Robot Ted tries to kill Buffy and her mom. The Mother Bezoar awakens and almost turns the entire
students and faculty population of Sunnydale High into egg controlled zombies.
-Ted, Bad Eggs

Jan, 1998 - Apart from Bad Halloweens, another Buffy tradition is the Bad Birthday. Spike and Drusilla gather the
parts of a demon known as the Judge, and evil being who could not be killed by any weapon forged of man. Buffy's
surprise birthday party is interrupted by vampire minions with the last dismembered piece of the Judge. Angel plans to
take the box of Judge bit far away, but the minions take it back. Buffy and Angel are unable to prevent the
reassembling of the Judge, and barely escape with their lives. The two hide out in Angel's apartment, and during the
last hours of Buffy's birthday, she loses her virginity to her one true love. It is a tender and beautiful moment except for
the fact that it causes Angel to lose his soul and become evil. Buffy is devastated and the Judge almost kills everyone in
Sunnydale Mall, but the residual military knowledge that Xander still has from Halloween allows him to tutor Buffy in
the fine art of Blowing Up Demons With Rocket Launchers.
Later that month Oz becomes a werwolf after his little cousin-Also a werwolf) bites him.

<A note on Buffy's birthday: In I Robot You Jane, there are two Buffy birth dates seen within moments of each other,
10/24/80 and 5/6/79. In The Gift, Buffy's tombstone says she was born in 1981. The later date is correct. Every time
Buffy is shown having a birthday, that birthday takes place in January. The two earlier dates were evidently altered
files caused by Moloch's presence in the computer>

Feb, 1998 - Amy helps Xander cast a love spell to get back at Cordelia, but it goes horribly wrong. Later that month
Jenny Calender discovers a way to restore Angel's souls. Angel starts a campaign of terror against. Angel kills Jenny
and leaves the body for Giles to find in his loft. Mad with grief, Giles marches to the factory to kill Angel. Giles almost
dies for his trouble, but he does succeed in burning down the old factory where Angel, Drusilla, and Spike were living.
-Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered, Passion

March, 1998 - A bad case of the flu lands Buffy Summers at Sunnydale General, where she saves a group of children
from the Kindestod. The month ends with the Sadie Hawkins Dance when the ghost of Jim Stanley causes random
couples to reenact his last moments with his teacher and lover Grace Newman. These ghostly possessions result in
death and injury, but end when Buffy and Angel are forced into the roles.
-Killed By Death, I Only Have Eyes For You

May, 1998 - Acathla is unearthed and Angel plans to revive the demon, which will cause the Earth to be dragged into a
hell dimension. As Angel attempts to revive Acathla, Drusilla manages to kill Kendra and Giles is captured and
tortured by Angel. Willow discovers Ms. Calender's spell to return Angel's soul, but is unable to complete it. Spike
strikes a deal with Buffy to help her if he is allowed to leave Sunnydale with Dru. This is also the time that Joyce
Summers discovers that her daughter is the Slayer. The final battle comes as Xander rescues Giles, Spike knocks out
Dru and drags her away, and Buffy fights Angel as he completes the ritual to revive Acathla. Willow retries the spell
and restores Angel's soul, but by then it is to late. Buffy still has to kill him in order to prevent the Earth being sucked
into hell. Heartbroken over getting her love back only to have to kill him, Buffy runs away to Los Angeles and
Sunnydale is without a Slayer.
-Becoming Parts 1 & 2

Sept, 1998 - Buffy returns from Los Angeles after rescuing a group of people from enslavement in another one of
those hell dimensions. After much conflict with Principal Snyder, she is finally readmitted back into Sunnydale High.
Later that month the vampire Mr. Trick comes to Sunnydale, the latest Slayer Faith also comes to town, and Buffy
begins a tentative relationship with Scott Hope.

Oct, 1998 - The month begins with Buffy helping Faith to kill the ancient vampire Kakistos. Things between Buffy
and Scott become complicated when Angel returns to Sunnydale fresh from hell. A little bit before Halloween, the
entire adult population of Sunnydale reverts to ugly adolescence courtesy of some band candy created by Ethan Rayne.

Nov. 1998 - Spike returns to Sunnydale in an attempt to win Dru back through magic. This results in Willow and
Xander being captured and Cordelia getting impaled on a rebar, but in the end Spike has a fresh new outlook on his
unlife and leaves Sunnydale intent on getting Dru back the old fashioned way.

Dec, 1998 - The vengeance demon Anyanka, patron saint of scorned women, appears in Sunnydale to grant Cordelia a
wish. The wish results in a Bizarro Sunnydale ruled by the Master, but this altered reality ends when Anyanka's power
center is destroyed by a desperate Bizarro Giles. Angel is haunted by his past and almost kills himself on Christmas
Day. Sunnydale experiences a miraculous white Christmas with banks of snow and overcast vampire friendly skies.

Jan, 1999 - The Watchers test Buffy by injecting her with drugs to weaken her abilities. It is traditional to have a
weakened Slayer face a vampire alone on her eighteenth birthday-Maybe that's why Slayers die so young). Things get
out of control, but Buffy still passes the test. Giles doesn't and is fired from the Watcher's Council.

Feb, 1999 - Buffy and everyone except Xander prevent the Sisterhood of Jhe from opening the Hellmouth. What they
don't realize is that on that same night, Xander prevented a gang of zombie punks from blowing up the school.

March, 1999 - The new Watcher, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, arrives in Sunnydale. Buffy and Faith investigate Balthazar
and El Eliminati, during the course of which Faith manages to kill Deputy mayor Allan Finch-Who seemed to be
having second thoughts about serving Mayor Wilkins and was probably trying to help the Slayers). Buffy kills
Balthazar and the Mayor performs the Rite of Dedication, a step in his planned Ascension that will grant him
invulnerability until he actually ascends to his new true demon form. Mr. Trick almost kills Buffy, but is staked by
Faith. faith allies herself with the Mayor. Her duplicity is revealed by the end of the month.

April, 1999 - Buffy prevents Jonathan from committing suicide and the Lunch Lady from killing off the students of
Sunnydale High School with rat poison in their jello.

May, 1999 - Buffy is named Class Protector at her senior prom.

June, 1999 - Graduation Day. Faith poisons Angel. Buffy tries to kill Faith to restore Angel but ends up just putting her
in a coma. Buffy makes Angel feed on her to be healed of the poison and after that Angel decides that if they live
through the Ascension he will leave town. The Scoobies come up with a plan that involves the entire graduating class,
so even non-Scoobies like Harmony, Jonathan, Larry, and Percy become part of Sunnydale's monster fighting force.
The Mayor ascends and becomes a giant snake. The giant Mayor snake eats Principal Snyder. Larry is killed by the
lashing tale of the giant snake. harmony is bitten by a vampire. Xander leds the class into battle against the vampire
minions of the Mayor. Buffy leds the Mayor into the school library, which is lined with explosives. The bombs go off,
killing the no longer invulnerable giant snake of a Mayor and destroying Sunnydale High school in the process. Angel
leaves for Los Angeles, to be followed by Cordelia-Since she can't afford to go to college since her father's little IRS
problem, she has decided to become an actress in Hollywood.

July, 1999 - Xander plans to drive across the country and discover America like Jack Kerouac, but he only gets as far
as Oxnard before his car breaks down.

Sept, 1999 - Buffy, Willow, and Oz start school at the University of California Sunnydale. Willow feels at home but
Buffy is overwhelmed, especially after the beating she receives at the hands of the vampire Sunday. After a pep talk
from Xander and a dusting of all vamps involved, Buffy is back to her old self again.

Oct, 1999 - Buffy's annoying room mate Kathy turns out to be a demonic room mate. After Kathy is sucked back into
the hell from whence she came, Buffy and Willow room together. This is also the month that Spike returns to
Sunnydale in search of the Gem of Amara. He has it for less than a day before Buffy takes it from him and decides to
give the Gem to Angel. At the end of the month the gang celebrates another ill-fated Halloween. This time, the Alpha
Delta fraternity house is turned into a real haunted house by the inadvertent summoning of the fear demon Gachnar.

Nov, 1999 - Oz gets involved with another werwolf named Veruca. Veruca almost kills Willow so that she can have
Oz to herself, but werwolf Oz kills werwolf Veruca before Willow can be hurt. In the aftermath of this, Oz leaves town
and Willow is devastated. Spike has a behavior modification chip inserted into his skull by the Initiative. One of their
top agents, Riley Finn, starts to have a serious crush on Buffy. Spike escapes from the Initiative and, after a few days
roaming the streets unable to feed, he seeks sanctuary at the apartment of Giles-Just in time for Thanksgiving). It is also
at this time that the Chumash vengeance spirit Hus is released from the buried Sunnydale Mission. Xander gets a
variety of diseases and many people are killed before Buffy guiltily manages to kill Hus.

Dec, 1999 - A heartbroken Willow creates havoc with a wish spell gone wrong. She does such a good job of putting
her friends in danger that the demon D'Hoffryn offers her a job as a vengeance demon. Willow politely declines. This is
also the month that Sunnydale is plagued by muteness when the Gentleman arrive and three Vahrall demons become
the latest group to attempt opening the Hellmouth. During the city wide muteness created by the Gentlemen, Tara and
Willow work magic together for the first time.

Jan, 2000 - Buffy manages to not have a horrible birthday, though it is followed by Ethan Rayne turning Giles into a
Fayrl demon.
-A New Man
< More Buffy Birthday fun: In Doomed, Buffy says tells Riley that she is a Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius. This
would put her birthday between January 17 and January 20. Two of her birthday episodes aired on the 19th and A New
Man was supposed to air on the 18th. Because of all this, the best candidate for Buffy's date of birth s January 19, 1981.
Now go and buy her something nice. Maybe something less killy and more frilly>

Feb, 2000 - Buffy becomes part of the Initiative. Maggie Walsh tries to kill her and fails. Professor Walsh is in turn
killed by her Frankenstein-like creation named Adam, who then escapes from the Initiative. This is also the month that
Faith wakes up from her coma and briefly switches bodies with Buffy. Once Buffy gets her body back, Faith follows a
long standing Sunnydale tradition of running away to Los Angeles.

Mar, 2000 - Sunnydale is slightly changed by an augmentation spell that turns Jonathan into a Superstar. Buffy and
Riley awaken the dark forces dormant at Lowell House-Which happens to be on top of the Initiative's underground
facility). Oz returns to Sunnydale to find that Willow is involved with Tara.
The month ends with Spike trying to split up the Scoobies, Initiative agent Forrest hall getting killed, Riley being
summoned to Adam by a control chip, and a climatic battle between Buffy and Adam. Buffy, Giles, Willow, and
Xander join together with one mind by calling upon the the power of the First Slayer. They manage to destroy Adam,
but afterwards the spirit of the First Slayer attempts to kill them all in their dreams.

June. 2000 - Xander begins working construction.

Aug, 2000 - Monks in the Czech Republic cast a powerful invocation that transforms the Key into a living human.
Dracula comes to Sunnydale to meet the Slayer.

Sep, 2000 - Giles takes over the Magic Box and harmony attempts to be the latest Big Bad in Sunnydale. Xander
moves out of the basement by the end of the month.

Oct, 2000 - Joyce's medical problems begin. Riley suffers some harmful aftereffects from the chemicals the Initiative
pumped into him. Spike attempts to have his chip removed and fails. Spike realizes that he is in love with Buffy.

Nov, 2000 - Buffy meets Glory for the first time and discovers that her sister Dawn is really the Key. After a lackluster
opening, the Magic Box soon becomes incredibly busy and Giles hires Anya to work there. Tara's family comes to
Sunnydale to drag her back home and protect her friends from her demon side. with Spike's help, Tara discovers that
she doesn't have a demon side and that it was all just a family legend to keep the women with a powerful magical
lineage in line.
After a CAT scan it is decided that Joyce needs an operation. Glory uses a Sobekian ritual to create a snake being to
seek out the Key. Ben summons the Queller Demon before the month is over, in an attempt to get rid of all the crazy
people Glory is leaving in her wake. The month ends with Buffy discovering that Riley has been going to a seedy
vamp nest to get bitten by other women. Riley inform Buffy that he will be leaving Sunnydale to help a demon hunting
mission unless Buffy gives him a reason to stay. Buffy kills all the vampires from the nest, but Riley leaves before she
gets a chance to make him stay with her.

Dec, 2000 - Joyce seems to be getting better. A troll-And exboyfriend of Anya's) rampages through Sunnydale while
Giles is in England.

Jan, 2000 - The Watchers come to Sunnydale with information about Glory, but they want to put Buffy through a long
series of tests and interrogate all her friends before sharing that information. The Knights of Byzantium begin to arrive
in Sunnydale in search of the Key. Buffy deals with the Watchers on her own terms and learns that Glory is a Hellgod
and not just a demon. Buffy tells the gang that Dawn is the Key, then Dawn discovers this for herself and freaks out-
Dawn cuts herself, which at least fulfills the requirement that something bad happens on Buffy's birthday). The gang
go up against Glory and get trashed, only Willow's teleportation spell prevents them from all being killed by Glory. A
pretty falling star appears over the Sunnydale-The teleported Glory, plummeting down to the mountains north of
Sunnydale.
-Checkpoint, Blood Ties

Feb, 2000 - The Bronze reopens after getting demolished by the troll. Drusilla returns to Sunnydale in an attempt to get
Spike back. Spike ties up both Buffy and Dru out of love, but neither one appreciates it. The robot April comes to
Sunnydale looking for Warren. the month ends with the unexpected death of Joyce Summers.

Mar, 2000 - Dawn attempts to rise her mother from the grave. Spike decides to help her do it right and they both go to
see a seemingly kindly old black magician named Doc. He tells dawn how to bring her mom back, but she changes her
mind at the last minute. Ben accidentally informs one of Glory's minions that the Key is in human form.
Buffy goes on a Slayer Vision Quest while Spike plays with his new Buffybot. Glory's minions capture Spike in the
belief that he might be the Key, and Spike refuses to tell Glory the Key's real identity.
Glory next believes that Tara is the Key since she is the newest person in Buffy's life. When she is proved wrong, the
Hellgod sucks out Tara's mind. Willow retaliates by bursting into Glory's apartment and attacking with all the dark
magic she can muster. She manages to hurt Glory, but Buffy still needs to rescue her. Glory then returns the favor by
attacking Willow's place. where the damaged Tara identifies Dawn as the Key. Buffy barely manages to escape the
Hellgod and the gang flees Sunnydale. Up in the desert away from Sunnydale they are attacked by the Knights of
Byzantium and Giles is wounded. Buffy calls Ben to come up and help him, but Ben turns into Glory and takes the Key
with her. Buffy has a serious breakdown but Willow pulls her out of it. Glory has all the crazies she created build a
massive tower of junk to reach the spot where the portal will appear when the Key is bleed. The entire gang comes
together to fight Glory. Willow restores Tara's mind, Buffy uses the Buffybot and the Dagon Sphere to weaken Glory
and then beats her with the troll hammer. Glory is beaten and reverts to Ben, who is then killed by Giles. Doc decides
to bleed Dawn and Spike tries to stop him but fails. Buffy reaches Dawn, but the portal has already opened and other
realities start merging into out own. In order to close the portal, Buffy sacrifices herself and saves the world.
Saving the world being something that she has done a lot.
