SUPPORTING NATURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

C ompliance with national and international laws and regulations is one of the key principles
of Hermes corporate policy and predection of the environment is a core constituent of
our corporate responsibility.
As a consequence, as long ago as 1996, Hermes was the first European abrasives factory
to be successfully audited on a voluntary basis in line with the EMAS (Eco-Management
and Audit Scheme).
The management system currently being implemented covers all areas of the company, with
processes relevant to the environment and energy, as well as to quality, being described and
monitored internally as well as certified externally by the TÜV-Nord organization in line with
DIN EN ISO 14001/50001.

B ound to tradition on the one hand, yet a pioneering developer of innovative products on
the other, Hermes places greatest emphasis on the production of high-quality, state-of-
the-art abrasives.
To enable this high standard of quality to be pursued and expanded still further in the
future, the TÜV NORD CERT auditing company awarded the Hermes Group the quality seal
for meeting the requirements of DIN EN ISO standard 9001.
Our customers – in other words you – benefit considerably from this reliability.

Powerful abrasives specially designed
for external cylindrical grinding
D ue to this technique's advantages, these days it is difficult to imagine
industrial machining without external cylindrical grinding. The external
cylindrical grinding process is used for precision-grinding and polishing of
redationally symmetrical parts.
Its chief area of application extends from the centreless exter-
nal cylindrical grinding of stainless steel pipes in a continuous
process to the external cylindrical grinding between centres of
piston rods with subsequent superfinishing, and also covers
the external cylindrical grinding of high-alloyed stainless steel
wires..

Especially for external cylindrical grinding

Hermes abrasives are bringing benefits
you'll appreciate:
• Belt grinding processes offer a lot of different
surface qualities
• High stock removal rates without high tool wear
• Long tool live
• Similar stock removal rates in comparison to
turning processes
• Highest consistent surface qualities
up to Ra > 0.1 µm
• Flexible machining process due to quick change
of types and grits
• Cost-effective machining process due to low
machine and tool costs

4
More cost-effective grinding with our
Hermes longlife grinding belts.
With our MERCURIT® and HERMESIT® longlife grinding belts, Hermes offers specially
developed products for the external cylindrical grinding of pipes, rods, rolls and wire. The
special three-dimensional structure of the abrasive grain causes new grain layers to be con-
stantly produced during the grinding process.
This brings advantages that significantly improve the cost efficiency of your grinding
processes:
• Consistent surface structure and roughness depths
to the very end of the tool's life

• Homogeneous surface structures,

as required for good corrosion resistance, for example

• 3 to 5 times longer tool life than conventional grinding belts, reducing stoppages
for belt replacement and machine downtimes, and saving costs on the disposal of used
belts

THE MERCURIT® GRINDING BELT SYSTEM

Hermes has developed the MERCURIT® grinding belt system especially for external
cylindrical grinding. With this system, the MERCURIT® RB 590 Y and the RB 595 Y (both
for high grinding pressure) and the MERCURIT® RB 591 Y (for medium grinding pressure)
cover intermediate and fine grinding, while the MERCURIT® RB 598 Y special grinding
belt is suitable for the cost-efficient finishing and polishing of cylindrical workpieces.

All types of belts are based on a compact agglomerate grain structure (the “MERCURIT®
principle”), in which the agglomerate is produced by a great many abrasive grains in a
binding mixture. MERCURIT® agglomerate

THE “HERMESIT® PRINCIPLE”

Hermes HERMESIT® longlife grinding belts feature special carrier spheres coated with
grain material, which wear uniformly during grinding and simultaneously release new
grains.
HERMESIT® longlife grinding belts produce an exceptional surface finish – the so-
called “HERMESIT Finish”. We recommend the use of low grinding pressure for work-
ing with RB 535 X or RB 545 X belts. On the other hand, RB 535 Y and RB 545 Y belts
achieve their best grinding results when medium grinding pressure is applied.
These abrasives are universal and suitable for dry and wet-grinding (resistant to Coated HERMESIT® carrier sphere
water, emulsion and oil).

5
External cylindrical grinding –
tubes, rods, rollers
F or the external cylindrical grinding of tubes, rods and roller, we differentiate between centreless
cylindrical grinding and grinding between centres. The machining steps depend on the initial
condition and nature of the workpieces, and the desired final quality.
In addition to dry-grinding, emulsion-grinding is also common. This reduces the grinding
temperatures, predecting the workpiece, lengthening the belts' service life and considerably
reducing grinding dust and noise emissions. Modern cylindrical grinding processes require
extremely constant material removal rates combined with constant surface characteristics.

Example: Grinding stainless steel pipes on a 6-station cylindrical grinding machine.

Pure performance –
Hermes initial grinding belts
Initial grinding tackles coarse surfaces, weld seams and flaws in the material's surface.
Possible flaws include scratches, scores, cracks, markings, oxidation, geometrical defor-
mation and impurities.
Coarse grit sizes (24 to 80) are primarily used for initial grinding. One of the most impressive
features of Hermes initial grinding belts is their extreme grain sharpness and high removal
rates. All products boast sturdy backing and can be used for both dry and wet-grinding
(resistant to water, emulsion and oil).

MERCURIT® and HERMESIT® longlife grinding
belts for cost-efficient intermediate grinding
Intermediate grinding is used to further smooth initially ground surfaces. For this purpose, grinding
belts in the medium to fine grit range (80 to 1200) are employed. The special three-dimensional
structure of the abrasive grain of MERCURIT® and HERMESIT® longlife grinding belts keeps
surface structures and roughness depths constant throughout the belts' life. In fact, they last 3 to
5 times longer than conventional grinding belts and increases the economic efficiency significantly.

Polishing with microlite wheels
H ermes microlite polishing wheels are elastic and, because of their excellent adaptability,
are particularly suitable for fine sanding. They satisfy the most stringent requirements in
terms of gloss and smoothness of workpiece surfaces (“mirror finish”). Polyurethane-based
binder containing a silicon carbide abrasive grain is formed in a special process to create
microlite polishing wheels with varying degrees of elasticity.
In many cases, the use of microlite polishing wheels for fine sanding reduces the number of
machining steps and increases the productivity and cost efficiency of your work process.
As well as being suitable for dry-grinding, microlite polishing wheels are resistant to water,
emulsion and oil and can therefore also be used for wet-grinding.

T he process known as “superfinishing” or “microfinishing” is

used for the ultra-fine polishing of pressure cylinders, rolls,
bearing points on shafts, and similar items.
The grinding film is pressed against the redating, initially
ground workpiece in a high-frequency, oscillating transverse
motion. Using Hermes grinding films for the micro-grain Film-backed aluminium oxide abrasive

11
Hermes high-performance grinding
A special type of external cylindrical grinding is the grinding of wire on so-called planetary head
grinding machines, whereby one or two grinding units per grinding station redate around the
wire during the grinding process.
The advantages of the cutting wire-grinding process over electrochemical methods such as
etching, and also over other cutting techniques such as draw-peeling or turning, are especially
evident when descaling and removing microcracks in the wire surface.
To ensure the required long tool life whilst simultaneously achieving constant surfaces, Hermes
offers suitable abrasives in the form of high-performance grinding belts with zirconia alumina
grain and longlife grinding belts with MERCURIT® agglomerate or HERMESIT® abrasive grain.
