5.A 220 V, 875 rpm 150 A separately excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.06 ohm. It
is fed from a single phase fully controlled rectifier with AC source voltage of 220 V, 50 Hz.
Assume continuous conduction mode and find
(i) Firing angle for rated torque at 750 rpm and -500 rpm.
(ii) Motor speed for α = 160° at rated torque.
6.Discuss the steady state analysis of 1 Ф fully controlled converter fed DC separately excited
motor with continuous and discontinuous mode.
7.A star connected squirrel cage induction motor has following rating and parameter:400V ,4
pole,1370 rpm, RS=2 Ω, R’s=0.28 Ω, Xm= X’r =3.5 Ω. The motor is controlled by voltage
source inverter at constant v/f ratio. Inverter allows frequency variation from 10 to 50 Hz.
(i) Obtain the plot between the breakdown torque and frequency
(ii) Calculate starting torque and current of this drive of the ratio of their values when motor
is started at rated voltage and frequency.
8.A 230 V, 960 rpm and 200A separately excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.02
ohm. The motor is fed from a chopper which provides both motoring and braking operations.
The source has a voltage of 230 V. Assume continuous conduction.
(i) Calculate duty ratio of chopper for motoring operation at rated torque and 350 rpm.
(ii) Calculate duty ratio of chopper for braking operation at rated torque and 350 rpm.
(iii) If maximum duty ratio of chopper is limited to 0.95 and maximum permissible motor
current is twice the rated, calculate maximum permissible motor speed obtainable without
field weakening and power fed to the source. 2.29

13. A 2.8kW, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4 pole, 1370rpm,delta connected squirrel cage induction motor has the
following parameters referred to the stator. Rs=2 ohm,Rr’= 5 ohm. Xs-Xr’=5 ohm, Xm=80 ohm.
Motor speed is controlled by stator voltage control. When the driving a fan load it runs at rated
speed at rated voltage. Calculate (i) motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 1200 rpm and
(ii) motor speed, current and torque for the terminal voltage of 300 V. 3.10
14. Speed of a separately excited DC motor is controlled by means of two 3Ф full converters one in
the armature circuit and the other in the field circuit and both are fed from 3 Ф, 400 V, 50 Hz
supply. Resistances of the armature and field circuits are 0.2 ohm and 400 ohm respectively. The
motor constant is 0.5 V-s/A. Field converter has zero degree firing angle delay. Armature and
field currents have negligible ripple. For rated load torque of 80 N-m at 3000 rpm, calculate (i)
rated armature current (b) firing angle delay of the armature converter (c) speed regulation at
rated load and (d) input power factor of armature converter.
