Citric Acid is a tricarboxylic acid when neutralised in an Acid/ Base reaction it has 3 H+
Functional groups/ ions to convert to water and sodium carbolylate from the combining of
Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (Baking Soda) with 3 Carboxylic Acid Units….
The reaction forms 3 moles of CO2 gas and 3 Moles of H2O and 3COONa units , leaving
Trisodium Citrate in solution along with its carbon oxygen back bone.

In addition to these great answers I'd like to point out that this mixture is essentially baking
powder. The difference between baking soda and baking powder is that the former is pure
sodium bicarbonate and the latter is sodium bicarbonate plus a solid acid.
You use baking soda when you are making a fluffy recipe that already contains an acid (for
example citric juice, vinegar or buttermilk. You use baking powder when you are making a
fluffy recipe that doesn't already contain an acid.

RelatedWhat is the ratio of water to citric acid to baking soda to have the most
efficient reaction? Does the temperature of the ingredients matter?
1.31g sodium bicarbonate (bicarb) plus 1.00g anhydrous citric acid or 1.09g citric acid
monohydrate. They are stoichiometrically correct in terms of making trisodium citrate (TSC),
however I'm not sure if sodium bicarbonate can completely react because a solution of
bicarb has a lower pH than that of TSC. It's possible that you may end up with disodium
citrate, in which case the amount of bicarb for a complete reaction would be two thirds of
the above figure.
Unless you want to collect as much CO2 as possible, the amount of water isn't important…
go with 100mL for the amounts I've specified.

Is it safe to eat the reaction of baking soda and citric acid?
Probably… but there’s much easier ways to burp incessantly. Just ask almost any 8 year old
boy.
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate- NaHCO3. It reacts with citric acid to form sodium
citrate and bicarbonate ion, which rapidly equilibrates to carbonic acid and then to carbon
dioxide, forming the famous baking soda and acid bubbles.
None of these products nor the reactants are toxic in reasonable quantities. The biggest
hazard is dental erosion from un-neutralized

reaction formula look like?
The products are trisodium citrate, water and carbon dioxide.
C6H8O7 + 3(NaHCO3) + heat → Na3C6H5O7 + 3(CO2) + 3(H2O)
Mass-wise the ratio is (baking powder : citric acid)
Citric acid is typically a mono-hydrate crystalline form, so the formula becomes (C6H8O7 +
H2O),
3× 84.0 and
g :that
192 has
g a molar mass of 192.12 + 18.02 = 200.14
NaHCO3 has
252 g : 192 g a molar mass of 84.01; so 3 x 84.01 gives 252.03
That gives a ratio very close to 250 / 200. That means 5 parts baking soda to 4 parts citric
acid by mass will give equal ratio’s of molecules for the above reaction to be balanced.
Remember, mass is weight, not volume, so don’t measure by teaspoons.

Related What is the reaction between baking soda and citric acid?
When citric acid and baking soda react with one another, they change chemi- cally and
form sodium ions, citric acid ions, carbon dioxide gas, and water. Carbon dioxide gas is
a normal component in our air. It also makes up the bubbles in carbonated drinks and is a
gas we naturally exhale.

Who said that adding vinegar and sodium bicarbonate was a good way to clear drains?
Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid and will react with sodium bicarbonate to generate CO2
gas and a solution of sodium acetate. So yes, the two neutralize each other. Nothing there is
useful for clearing drains unless you count the bubbling of the CO2 gas agitating the crud in
the plumbing trap.
Depending on what is clogging the drain you can use either an acid or a base. Sulfuric acid
