DISTRIBUTION JDM F15
1 Scope

1.1 JDM F15 specifies requirements for electroplated zinc coatings for fasteners made of steel.
JDM F15 applies primarily to electroplated coatings on threaded fasteners, non-threaded fasteners, and
fastener accessories such as pins and washers. JDM F15 may also be applied to other threaded parts
where torque tension relationship is important.

1.2 JDM F15 coatings are specified in terms of ISO 4042. Inch part dimension requirements are
specified in terms of ASTM F1941.

1.3 JDM F15 contains designations and requirements for zinc coating metal. JDM F15 provides
requirements for historical fasteners designed using zinc cobalt or nickel chromium designations. Zinc
cobalt and nickel chromium designations are not for new design.

D D
Note 1 Electroplated zinc non-fasteners should reference JDM F23. Electroplated zinc hydraulic connectors
should reference JDM F19. Electroplated zinc nickel parts should reference JDM F21.

1.4 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or

R R
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should”
or “recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be

A A
appropriate for all machines or all applications.

2 Terms and Definitions

F For the purposes of JDM F15, the terms and definitions in ISO 2080 and the following, apply.

2.1
F
T T

R 10 Freedom from Hydrogen Embrittlement

10.1 General
R
A JDM F15 fasteners shall be free from hydrogen embrittlement. Electroplated steel fasteners which are
subject to hydrogen embrittlement shall be suitably treated before, after, or before and after electroplating
A
F F
to obviate such embrittlement.

10.2 Special Requirements

T T
10.2.1 JDM F15 fasteners with surface hardness ≥ 39 HRC shall not be subject to acid cleaning
treatment. Special pre-treatments are advisable using non-acidic methods such as dry honing, abrasive
blasting or alkali derusting.

10.2.2 Unless otherwise specified, threaded fasteners with surface hardness ≥ 39 HRC, and non-
threaded fasteners with surface hardness ≥ 39 HRC and total mass ≥ 0.5 kg, shall be baked at 200 °C to
230 °C part temperature within 1 hour of plating, for a minimum of 8 hours. Exemption to this requirement
shall be agreed upon and documented between John Deere and the supplier based on knowledge of the
part loading during application.

11 Mechanical Plating Substitution

11.1 JDM F15 non-threaded fasteners with surface hardness ≥ 39 HRC and mass ˂ 0.5 kg shall have
a mechanically deposited zinc coating meeting JDM F22 requirements. Coiled spring pins are exempt
from clause 11.

11.2 JDM F15 fasteners meeting clause 11.1 with conversion coating designation “C” shall meet the
requirements of JDM F22 2A.

11.3 JDM F15 fasteners meeting clause 11.1 with conversion coating designation “R” shall meet the
requirements of JDM F22 2E.

Note 7 Mechanical deposited zinc coating is used for high hardness parts to reduce the risk of hydrogen
embrittlement and is the most similar to electroplating zinc coatings in coating thickness, cost, and torque tension
range. If the default to mechanical zinc is not desired for a particular part, a specification change is required to
designate another coating.

9
JDM F15 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER
DISTRIBUTION

12 Dimension Requirements

12.1 All part dimensional limits other than screw threads apply before coating. Any special requirement
for dimensions after coating shall be specified or agreed upon by a John Deere representative.

12.2 Specified size limits for metric or inch screw threads apply before coating. After coating, metric
threads must pass the tolerance position H/h GO thread plug or ring gage. Internal Unified inch thread
must pass the class 1B, 2B or 3B GO thread plug gage, and external Unified inch thread must pass the
class 3A GO thread ring gage.

12.3 For guidance on coating thicknesses that may be applied on screw threads without modifications
to the limits before coating, and for guidance on modifications for thicker coatings, see ISO 4042 for
metric threads, or see ASTM F1941 for Unified inch threads.

D D
13 Corrosion Protection

13.1 Unless otherwise specified, the significant surfaces shall show neither sacrificial coating corrosion

R R
products (except at corners or edges) nor base metal corrosion at the end of continuous neutral salt spray
according to ISO 9227 or ASTM B117 for the respective test times specified in Table 5 and clause 13.5
when inspected with the unaided eye at normal reading distance. Unless otherwise specified, only those
surfaces of the fastener that are positioned in the test chamber in accordance with the specified test

A A
method are pertinent for evaluating results.

13.2 All tests, including accelerated corrosion testing, shall be carried out at least 24 hours after

F F
conversion coating treatment process.

13.3 A supplementary treatment may be used in addition to the conversion coating to meet the

T T
required corrosion resistance, provided that the coating with the supplementary treatment meets all
specified requirements.

Note 8 Use of certain supplementary treatments can affect subsequent paint adhesion. Post-plating paint
adhesion requirements are specified by the individual units.

13.4 Each lot of JDM F15 fasteners, excluding barrel electroplated flat washers, shall meet or exceed
the as processed NSS corrosion protection requirements in Table 5. The test report shall be provided
during Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and subsequently available upon request. See
clause 16 for acceptable test documentation.

13.5 Barrel electroplated flat washers shall meet as processed sacrificial coating corrosion resistance
of 12 hours and base metal corrosion resistance of 144 hours, regardless of conversion coating
designation.

Note 9 Barrel electroplated flat washers tend to adhere to each other during coating application due to their
geometry. During coating metal application, washers have an opportunity to separate because of the rotation action
of the barrel. Washers adhered together prior to the conversion coating application remain together without
opportunity to separate because the conversion coating is typically a single dip operation.

Summary of Changes from Previous Edition
(For Information Only — Not Part of the Standard)
2014-08-14:
In clause 14.2.2, removed contradictory sentence to JDQ 88.

2014-07-08:
Introduced the use of as-processed and as-received corrosion tables due to existence of handling
degradation after as-processed tests are completed. The supplier requirement for compliance is the as-
processed table. The as-received expectation has not changed from previous version.

Removed all conversion treatments except C and R, colorless and black, respectively.

D Removed ability to perform torque tension tests on production fasteners in lieu of requirement to perform
the test on surrogates. Suppliers shall provide fasteners within a set coefficient of friction range instead of
D
R R
a K value range (as in T=KDF).

Designated nickel chromium and zinc cobalt not for new design. Historical parts using nickel chromium or
zinc cobalt are to be provided with the coating as specified on the print. Historical nickel chromium and

A A
zinc cobalt fasteners are not affected by this revision.

Replaced available options for minimum thickness with the requirement for all JDM F15 zinc plated parts

F F
to maintain 5 micron thickness minimum.

Changed mechanical plating option to requirement for all JDM F15 non-threaded fasteners ≥ 39 HRC with
the exceptions of coiled spring pins, and non-threaded fasteners ˃ 0.5 kg.
