Remote Terminal Unit Overview

An RTU is a microprocessor-controlled electronic device that interfaces objects in the physical world to a distributed control system or SCADA system. It transmits telemetry data to a master system and uses messages from the master to control connected objects. RTUs have advantages like flexible and scalable hardware, flexible communications, ability to perform complex PLC functions, integrated HMI, modern engineering tools, archive and diagnostic functionality, and high reliability and robustness against cyber attacks. RTUs are important multipurpose devices used for remote monitoring and control in industrial automation environments, serving a similar purpose to PLCs but to a higher degree.

REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT

2.0 INTRODUCTION OF RTU :

A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a microprocessor -controlled electronic device
that interfaces objects in the physical world to a distributed control
system or SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system by
transmitting telemetry data to a master system, and by using messages from the
master supervisory system to control connected objects. Other terms that may be
used for RTU are remote telemetry unit and remote tele control unit.
2.1 ADVANTAGES OF REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT :
1. Flexible and Scalable hardware concept.
2. Flexible communications to IEDs Ability to perform complex PLC functions
Integrated HMI for station monitoring.
3. Modern engineering tools with data exchange interface.
4. Archive functionality Diagnostic and Maintenance functionality Highest
reliability Robustness against cyber security attacks.

2.2 IMPORTANCE OF REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT :

A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a multipurpose device used for remote
monitoring and control of various devices and systems for automation. It is
typically deployed in an industrial environment and serves a similar purpose to
programmable logic circuits (PLCs) but to a higher degree. An RTU is considered a
self-contained computer as it has all the basic parts that, together, define a
computer: a processor, memory and storage. Because of this, it can be used as an
intelligent controller or master controller for other devices that, together,
automate a process such as a portion of an assembly line.
2.3 HISTORY OF REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT
In the early application of monitoring and control systems, the interface between
the power system and the control system was in a remote location. This interface
was designated a Remote Terminal Unit – or RTU . The RTU had
Analog devices to convert the Analog values into binary values (usually 8 to 12
bits). The design and development of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) circuit
and hardware implementation which represented in Distribution Automation
System (DAS). The design based on microcontroller using PIC16F877A and also
introduces the orcas

2.4 BASIC PRINCIPLE OF REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT

RTU stands for REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT, sometimes also called REMOTE
TELEMETRY UNIT or REMOTE Tele control UNIT. A RTU is a microprocessor
based DEVICE that monitors and controls field DEVICES, that then connects to
plant control or SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems.
