Introduction:

This activity is all about the real-life activity where “functions” has something to
do. I believe that the purpose of it is for us to better understand it. This lesson is
intended to help us how well we are able to articulate in weiting the relationships
between variables arising in everyday contexts. It also helps us translate between
everyday situations and sketch graphs of relationships between variables. This also
helps us interpret algebraic functions in terms of the contexts in which they arise. And
most importantly, this makes us reflect on the domains of everyday functions and in
particular whether we should be discrete or continuous.

When our teacher introduces our topic functions, we naturally bring the thought
to life through the idea of function machines. But functions will really begin to come to
life as we, students, find uses for functions in the real world. We can easily grasp the
idea of a function machine: an input goes in; something transpires to it inside the
machine; an output comes out. Another input goes in; another output comes out. If we
know the machine's function rule (or rules) and the input, we can predict the output. If
we know the rule(s) and an output, we can determine the input. We also can imagine
the machine asking, "What's my rule?" If we examine the inputs and outputs, we
should be able to figure out the mystery function rule or rules. When it comes to
recognizing functions in the real world, it is useful to think of the term ''is a function of''
as ''is determined by.'' You see, in a function, no input can be related to two different
outputs, otherwise, given the input, we couldn't determine the output. Therefore, the
input determines the output, so the output is a function of the input.

FUNCTIONS is very useful in our everyday life. It can help us do many things that
are important in our everyday lives. Here are some daily tasks and real-life activities
for which functions is important:

• Managing money
• Preparing food
• Figuring out distance, time and cost for travel
• Understanding sports (being a player and team statistics)
• Playing music
• Baking
• Home decorating
• Sewing
• Gardening and landscaping

In order for us to connect functions in everyday our everyday life and while
learning at home, we need to know how they are being used in our daily living. Some
of the simple things we are doing, we are unaware of the things that we can learn
from it.

When we hear how “functions” can be used every day, we will be more likely to
view it as important and valuable. We may also become more interested in it. We
can greatly influence how we think about mathematics if we are applying it in our
everyday life.
BODY:
Examples of How my life Functions Activity

1st Scenario:
When entering a mall or a certain establishment or office, they will check on your
temperature. There is this what we call triage wherein there is an initial evaluation.
You will fill out the Health Declaration Form and check on your body temperature.
Temperature Check: when taking body temperature, the temperature of the body will
act as the input while the measurement that comes out as either in degree Celsius
and Fahrenheit scales is the function output.

2nd Scenario
In my everyday workout, I always check if I gain or lose some weight. After playing
basketball, or jogging, or biking, I stand on our digital weighing scale and list down the
weight I gain or lose during that time.
Weight: when you take your weight usually by standing on a scale your body weight
will serve as the input while the measurement usually in kilogram is your output.

3rd Scenario
My family loves excursion. We usually go on beaches and do swimming activities. We
have it 3-5 times a month as long as my parents are not busy in their work. In going
out, we always consider the fuel of our car so we can slash some budget for it.
Fuel Efficiency: A car's efficiency in terms of kilometer per litre of fuel consumes is a
function. If a car typically gets 10L per 100km and you input 50L of fuel, it will be able
to travel roughly 500km. The car's efficiency may be a function of the car's design
(including weight, tires, and aerodynamics), speed, temperature inside and outside of
the car, and other factors.

INSIGHTS:
In doing this activity, I learn that if you know what the function is, it iss not hard
to understand it. In fact, I realize that there are a lot of things I am doing but I am
unaware that it is an example of function. In the modality of learning that we had now
that we are in the new normal, this activity helps us a lot. We may not learn face to
face, but we clearly know that even a home we can apply the knowledge we gain in
our online class.
DOCUMENTATION:

Checking of Temperature before entering a certain establishment like mall, office,

clinic etc.
Weighing body weight to check if after workout, does I gain or lose weight.
Going on an excursion and check the fuel efficiency of our car.

MESSAGE TO TEACHER:

I would just like to say, thank you for this activity Sir Agbuya. I know that distance
learning is an struggle for all of us, but in this activity I realize that I can also learn on my own
even without the help of others.
