CHAINS

Comprehension 1: A chain is in equilibrium with

the help of ideal string in the position shown in the
figure. Mass per unit length of the chain is λ. Find

1. tension in the string in equilibrium

2. acceleration of the points of the chain
immediately after the string is cut

3. velocity of the chain when entire chain just
becomes vertical

Comprehension 2:A chain is in equilibrium
with the help of ideal string in the position
shown in the figure. Mass per unit length of the
chain is λ. Find

4. tension in the string in equilibrium
5. tension at the point A of the chain in
equilibrium
6. acceleration of the points of the chain
immediately after the string is cut
7. tension at point A of the chain immediately
after the string is cut

8. With the help of force F, a chain is held in
equilibrium in the position shown such that
one third of its length lies on a smooth
horizontal surface and remaining part is
hanging vertically. Now the chain is slowly
pulled towards left so that entire chain
become horizontal. Find the work done by the
external force in this process.

9. A uniform chain of mass M is
placed on smooth part of a
horizontal stationary table. It is
now slowly pulled towards left
against friction from the rough
part with the help of external force.
Find the work done by this force in
pulling the entire chain on to the
rough part.

Comprehension 3: A chain of length L = L1 + L2 is at
rest on a smooth inclined plane as shown in the
figure. L1 part hangs where as L2 part rests on the
inclined plane.
10. Find the ratio L1/L2 for equilibrium of the chain in
smooth inclined plane.

11. If the ratio is made double of the above value, find
the minimum µ required between chain and the
inclined plane to keep chain stationary

12. If the ratio is made half of the value in Q10s, find the minimum µ required between chain and
the inclined plane to keep chain stationary
13. In question 12, if µ available is only 2/3rd of the µ required, then, what will be the initial
acceleration of the chain after releasing it from rest?

Comprehension 4: O is a fixed point on an inclined
plane. Part of the inclined plane below the point O is
smooth where as part above it is rough. Assume the
inclined plane to be sufficiently long. A force F starts
pulling the chain slowly up the inclined plane. Find
the work done by this force if
14. Coefficient of friction between the chain and part
of inclined plane above the point O is µ = 0.5

15. Coefficient of friction between the chain and part
of inclined plane above the point O is µ = 0.5x/L
where x is the distance from point O up the
inclined plane.
16. A smooth uniform chain is resting on a
inclined plane (of parabolic shape) as
shown in the figure. The entire
parabolic cross-section is vertical. Find
the tension at the topmost point of the
chain if its mass per unit length is λ.
Given, equation of the parabola is
4x !
y=− + 4a
a

17. A uniform chain of length L and mass M
is undergoing rotational motion on a
smooth horizontal table such that each
part of it is undergoing circular motion
with same angular velocity ω. Find the
tension in the chain. Chain will form
circular shape while rotating.

A uniform chain is resting on the curved surface of a smooth
vertical cone of semi-vertex angle α = 30" . Chain has mass M
and length L.
18. Find the tension in the chain in equilibrium. Chain will form
circular shape (in horizontal plane) in equilibrium

19. If the chain is now made to undergo rotational motion with
axis of cone as the axis of rotation, such that all small parts
of chain undergo circular motion of radius r with angular
velocity ω, find the tension in the chain.
