Downloading VMware Player

To download VMware Player:

Navigate to the VMware Download Center.

Locate VMware Player under Desktop & End user Computing.
Select the installer from the list according to your host operating system.
Click Download.
If prompted, log in to your Customer Connect pro le. If you do not have a
pro le, create one. For more information, see How to create a Customer
Connect pro le (2007005)
Ensure that your pro le is complete and enter all mandatory elds. For more
information, see How to update your Customer Connect pro le (2086266).
Review the End User License Agreement and click Yes if you agree.

If the installer fails to download during the download process:

Delete the cache in your web browser. For more information, see:
Mozilla Firefox: How to clear the Firefox cache
Google Chrome: Delete your cache and other browser data
Microsoft Internet Explorer: How to delete the contents of the
Temporary Internet Files folder
Disable the pop-up blocker in your web browser. For more information, see:
Mozilla Firefox: How do I disable a Pop-up blocker?
Google Chrome: Manage pop-ups
Microsoft Internet Explorer: How to turn Internet Explorer Pop-up
Blocker on or off on a Windows XP SP2-based computer
Try to download using a different web browser application.
Disable any local rewall software.
Restart your machine.
Download the installer from a different computer or network.

Installing VMware Player

Notes:

You can only have one version of VMware Player installed at once. You must
uninstall any previous version of VMware Player before installing a new
version.
If the installer reports an error when you run it, you may want to verify the
download. For more information, see Verifying the integrity of downloaded
installer les (1537).

To install VMware Player on a Windows host:

Log in to the Windows host.

Open the folder where the VMware Player installer was downloaded. The
default location is the Downloads folder for the user account on the
Windows host.

Note: The installer le name is similar to VMware-Player-xxxx-xxxx.exe, where

xxxx-xxxx is the version and build numbers.
Right-click the installer and click Run as Administrator.
Follow the on-screen instructions to nish the installation.
Restart the host machine.

To install VMware Player on a Linux host:

Note: VMware Player for Linux is available as a .bundle download from the
VMware Download Center. The Linux bundle installer starts a GUI wizard on most
Linux distributions. On some Linux distributions, the bundle installer starts a
command-line wizard instead of a GUI wizard.

Log in to the Linux host with the user account that you plan to use with
VMware Player.
Open a terminal interface. For more information, see Opening a command
or shell prompt (1003892).
Change to root. For example:

su root

Note: The command that you use depends on your Linux distribution and
con guration.
Change directories to the directory that contains the VMware Player bundle
installer le. The default location is the Download directory for the user
which initiated the download from the VMware Download Center.
Run the appropriate Player installer le for the host system. For example:

sh VMware-Player-e.x.p-xxxx.architecture.bundle --option

Where e.x.p-xxxx is the version and build numbers, architecture is i386 or

x86_64, and option is a command line option.

The command line options available are:

--gtk
Opens the GUI-based VMware installer, which is the default option.
--console
Use the terminal for installation.
--custom
Use this option to customize the locations of the installation directories
and set the hard limit for the number of open le descriptors.
--regular
Shows installation questions that have not been answered before or
are required. This is the default option.
--ignore-errors or -I
Allows the installation to continue even if there is an error in one of the
installer scripts. Because the section that has an error does not
complete, the component might not be properly con gured.
--required
Shows the license agreement only and then proceeds to install Player.
Accept the license agreement.

Note: If you are using the --console option or installing VMware Player on a
Linux host that does not support the GUI wizard, press Enter to scroll
through and read the license agreement or type q to skip to the yes/no
prompt.
Follow the on-screen instructions or prompts to nish the installation.
Restart the Linux host.

After installation

On Windows host systems:

The installer creates a desktop shortcut, a quick launch shortcut, or a

combination of these options in addition to a Start Menu item.
To start VMware Player on a Windows host system, select Start > Programs
> VMware Player.

On Linux host systems:

VMware Player can be started from the command line on all Linux
distributions.
On some Linux distributions, VMware Player can be started in the GUI from
the System Tools menu under Applications.
To start VMware Player on a Linux host system from the command line, run
the vmplayer command in a terminal window. For more information, see
Opening a command or shell prompt (1003892). For example:

/usr/bin/vmplayer &

PROS OF DEPLOYING VM

Less physical hardware. In a typical distributed control system (DCS), you

might have two Tag/OS servers, two batch servers, a historian or two, and
an engineering station or two. Easily, you’re looking at six servers that will
need to be physically maintained. You’ll nd a time and overall cost savings
on the replacement of hardware and maintenance.
Central location to manage all assets. All of your virtual machines can be
managed from one location.
More eco-friendly. If you look at your current con guration, most of your
machines are idling along. But, with them virtualized and running on a
cluster, you maximize your machines’ potential while saving money on
energy costs.
Disaster recovery is quick. Re-deploy virtual machines on your system (once
you get the host machine back online) and you can have your system back
up and running in no time.

CONS OF DEPLOYING VM

Cost. The upfront cost can be much higher and, depending on how high of
an availability you want, you’ll need to be willing to design the system for
your needs now and in the future.
Complexity. If you’re not familiar with the hardware and network aspects of
the whole setup, it can be daunting to gure out. Routing rules and virtual
local area networks (VLAN) continue to add complexity, especially if security
is a concern.

TWO TYPES OF COMMERCIAL VIRTUAL MACHINE APPS AND DIFFERENCES

BETWEEN THEM

1. VMware: VMware is a desktop virtualization software platform that is

developed by VMware. It is hypervisor software that is placed on a physical server
that allows us to run multiple operating systems on a single server. All the
resources used by the physical server are used by all servers.

Some features of VMware:

It offers products comprising virtualization, software storage, and

networking tools.
Various security options and multiple operating system support.
It uses the host’s resources to run the functioning of the operating system
installed in a virtual environment.
For proper functioning, it uses resources in the assigned manner.

2. VirtualBox: VirtualBox is software that is provided by Oracle to install virtual

machines onto your system. It was introduced in the year 2007 by Innotek Gmbh
and later was developed by Oracle. It is also called a software virtualization
package that is capable to load multiple operating systems.

Some features of VirtualBox:

It offers a variety of operating systems such as Windows XP, Linux, Ubuntu,

and macOS.
It is a very rich, robust, and extremely high-performance product offered for
home and enterprise uses.
It is used by professionals in the form of Open Source Software.
It is open-source software that provides virtualization and is capable to offer
services on almost every type of host operating system.
